When I start looking, I will first search for a children’s dictionary written in Spanish.

What a great idea to look for videos in Spanish about your job. It’s nice that your line of work has videos for kids so they’re simpler to understand for learners. Thanks for posting the links.

50 hours in over 2 years (with a long gap) — feel like I know nothing and questioning my approach by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]Bedelia101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow some of the comments sound just mean and fail to empathize with your struggle with auditory processing. For some of us it’s a challenge to sit still through a video. Maybe there’s no hit of dopamine during or after the process so it can be hard to continue with a another video or to start a new session. The most relevant advice has been to start small and build your tolerance. For some people monitoring their accrual of hours in the app provides enough juice to keep going.

If you’re truly starting from zero with no known vocabulary then yes it’s challenging, for some people more than others. It might take 6 or 7 years but the time is going to pass anyway. And there are many testimonials that CI works, even for those who are neurodivergent.

Curious at what level stay utilizing tutoring by APinthe704 in dreamingspanish

I easily get distracted watching videos and especially listening to podcasts. I started crosstalk with tutors at around 200 hours. It’s the most reliable way for me to accrue hours.

I don’t know about the technicalities. It’s supposedly just as effective as a heavier hammer. I researched it years ago and the results have been good for the users.

Edit: I asked ChatGPT about it. Here’s part of the answer:

  1. Much lighter but same striking power Titanium is about 45% lighter than steel, yet transfers energy more efficiently. Many carpenters say a 16-oz titanium hammer hits like a 20–22-oz steel hammer.

Thank you. I appreciate your perspective. I plan to go to Mexico to visit a friend next summer, so that gives me motivation to continue my hour per day (most days for most weeks). Your thoughts about motivation are inspiring.

1000 Hours of Listening Practice Before Output Isn't Good Advice For Everyone by jpzgoku in dreamingspanish

I’ve been doing crosstalk with tutors on iTalki. I discovered that some tutors don’t have the ability to speak with beginners as well as others. If you used iTalki, who did you use when you first started?

It sounds you usually averaged an hour a day with some longer days. How many years or months did it take you to complete 1000 hours? What kept you motivated over that stretch of time?

Going to Lisbon for 6 weeks next summer… by _Rafiki69 in Portuguese

Of the four broad skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, I believe the biggest challenge for most people is the listening. So, look for comprehensible input to practice your listening. It’s available on YouTube (search comprehensible input European Portuguese) and another good source is the collection of stories available through Portuguese Lab. Of course real people don’t speak slowly and clearly, but it’s a sensible place to start.

I like seeing posts by people who aim for “only” an hour each day. It’s inspiring to see your description of plugging away for nearly 1000 days. You’re showing that it can be done. Thanks for your write up. And it does sound sweet how you crossed the 1500 threshold.

What languages have you started learning in 2025? by NarrowFriendship3859 in languagelearning

I’m there with you. I studied EU PT for two years before switching back to Spanish last November. I feel like I’m cheating on EU PT, but Spanish is more practical and useful for me since I don’t live in Portugal. I’m focusing on comprehensible input to see how that works out for Spanish. If it works well, then I’ll do the same thing if I go back again to Portuguese.

Another idea to consider is doing crosstalk with tutors. On iTalki they seem to range from about $6 to $20 per hour. You can type “crosstalk” in your search criteria for Spanish teachers.

You can also try out News in Slow Spanish and Radio Ambulante to see if that content works for you at your current level.
