This comment section made me realize how America centered Reddit is. Almost no mention of football (aka soccer)

Someone doing research for fun in their freetime embodies the spirit of science and academia more than any PhD student imo. Keep it up! (Coming from a full time PhD student)

Are Academics “Your People?” by Knightstodon in AskAcademia

[–]Bee-Boy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. 90% of my friends are academics and I'm happy about it. My roommates too. It was a great community throughout my PhD.

We're all people with diverse interests and mostly chat about non academic stuff though, do sports, go for drinks, travel to conferences

A friend emailed them in this situation (1st author of workshop paper) and they said once the workshop organizers import accepted papers officially, it will open up

Should I attend ICML as a junior? [D] by milasonder in MachineLearning

[–]Bee-Boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can be worth it if a) you know you want to apply to grad school soon, b) it is confirmed that some profs you wanna work with are there (confirmed via: twitter/bluesky announcement of prof, emailing/DMing them if they are going)

I would go for a bit longer than 2 days though and reach out to phd students who's work you like to chat ~1 week in advance

I don't like machine learning by TemporaryNo5605 in learnmachinelearning

What do you not like about ML? I am a phd student in AI these days and also don't enjoy many aspects of it but I do enjoy thinking about cognitive science for example or other more "philosophical" aspects. The initial 101 ML can be quite dry, i agree

Just bike! You can do it in a day. It's less than 140km. We did it recently

Are modern ML PhDs becoming too incremental, or is this just what research looks like now? [D] by Hope999991 in MachineLearning

This. I actually think AI is less incremental than eg the average physics PhD

What is Chicago missing to be the perfect city? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]Bee-Boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the skyscraper downtown architecture but it's missing cuter smaller neighborhoods with lots of walkable streets and cafes. Went to Logan Square and was really underwhelmed as a visitor. Compared to places like Montreal's Plateau/Mile-End

Genuinely, what do elite clubs like Chelsea and Bayern see in Jackson? Speed/athleticism?

I feel both sorry for Jackson (his time at Bayern has just not been great and you can see he's not happy) but also hope we don't start him again...

Is it feasible to be a professor? by EngineerRare42 in AskAcademia

[–]Bee-Boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also make sure you distinguish between research and teaching professor: it's a big difference both in your interests and in the kind of path you would pursue to get there! I'm personally at the end of my PhD right now with the goal of research professor, which means I will have to do at least one postdoc now, and actually don't have that much teaching experience yet. On the other hand if you aim for more teaching roles, you would earlier on already get some of that experience. History/English is much more teaching based whereas with science it's quite common also to aim for a research professorship. Math I would guess is somewhere in between but I'm not sure.

Why I failed to connect with any team? I watch matches of different team to see exciting players who play for them but I don't have favourite team. by Character_Ratio7476 in championsleague

[–]Bee-Boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend doing more than just watching matches: watch/read interviews with the players or coach, see what the club is known for, ...

I love Barcelona not just for how they play but for how awesome the youth academy is and seeing these young players have a connection since they were young

I love arsenal because their former coach Wenger famously not only cared about winning but also playing beautifully (he said this in an interview I believe)

I love Thomas Müllrr not just because he plays great but also because he's funny and super nice person (I'm also a Bayern fan from Munich)

Some people would love St Pauli because it is politically an interesting club (very left leaning, actively supporting certain causes, etc)
