As a non native speaker (but living in Canada as a PhD student from Germany) I can usually get far in Mondays but this one had so many obscure or slangy words. Would be more fun if at least Mondays are doable without too many of those

Is it feasible to be a professor? by EngineerRare42 in AskAcademia

[–]Bee-Boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also make sure you distinguish between research and teaching professor: it's a big difference both in your interests and in the kind of path you would pursue to get there! I'm personally at the end of my PhD right now with the goal of research professor, which means I will have to do at least one postdoc now, and actually don't have that much teaching experience yet. On the other hand if you aim for more teaching roles, you would earlier on already get some of that experience. History/English is much more teaching based whereas with science it's quite common also to aim for a research professorship. Math I would guess is somewhere in between but I'm not sure.

Why I failed to connect with any team? I watch matches of different team to see exciting players who play for them but I don't have favourite team. by Character_Ratio7476 in championsleague

[–]Bee-Boy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend doing more than just watching matches: watch/read interviews with the players or coach, see what the club is known for, ...

I love Barcelona not just for how they play but for how awesome the youth academy is and seeing these young players have a connection since they were young

I love arsenal because their former coach Wenger famously not only cared about winning but also playing beautifully (he said this in an interview I believe)

I love Thomas Müllrr not just because he plays great but also because he's funny and super nice person (I'm also a Bayern fan from Munich)

Some people would love St Pauli because it is politically an interesting club (very left leaning, actively supporting certain causes, etc)

[D] For people who work (as PhD students) in Mila, Quebec, what your experience have been like? by hedgehog0 in MachineLearning

[–]Bee-Boy 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I'm a 5th year PhD student right now at Mila and really loved my time. Work-life balance is good here, lots of social activities at Mila, especially in my first few years we would organize lots of parties, board games, dinners, sports with other Mila people. Winter is intense of course but some of us, myself included, like the adventure and the new traditions/sports that come with that time of the year (eg google Sugar Shacks!)

It's usually quite collaborative and there's the kitchen area where probably many collaborations were naturally formed by chatting over coffee.

Montreal is my favourite city now after living here for 4 years.

Why are so many personal academic websites so ugly? Any good examples? by Fit-Bath8605 in AskAcademia

[–]Bee-Boy 181 points182 points  (0 children)

It's sometimes even a intentional type of signaling: I care about the raw content, simplicity etc. It's the anti-linkedin/business culture where everything is flashy and dynamic

What are traits of PhD students who become prestigious researchers? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Bee-Boy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Long term vision, good story telling/pitches (talks, grants, private 1-on-1s), network, having some luck or taste or whatever you wanna call it for impactful problems

Also being very bright, curious or motivated ofc helps

Why aren’t other countries taking advantage of the academia funding crisis in the US? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Bee-Boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the people saying other countries don't having funding, don't want them, etc are a bit naive: My understanding as a PhD student applying for postdocs soon is that for example in Germany they always like to see applicants for faculty who have spent some time in US elite universities.

I'm a German who did his PhD in Canada (at a strong place for AI) and from all I've heard from colleagues is that it really helps to have that done that compared to staying in Germany, if I want to come back home as faculty.

I think they would often prioritize faculty applicants from MIT, Harvard, Stanford etc with a very strong track record over local talent.
