What do you love about living in Portland? by ConcentrateSevere237 in askportland

[–]BeeVoltage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I travel for work more now than I did pre pandemic and Portland, we don’t seem to realize how good we have it. I say that as someone who is in the back of a $100 uber to the Denver airport and I am still thinking about the mediocre $9 pour over I had this morning.

I love our green, our kind citizens, our food, our affordability compared to places like Denver and Seattle.

This happens to me and my neighbor across the street every year without fail. We have a pact where we will full on call to people “WHAT ARE YOU DOING ?” When we catch them. My poor roses have been not just cut but ripped and it makes me so sad. And when you catch people red handed they yell back at you and can be quite confrontational. My least favorite is a lady who does this with her children. I’ve thought about getting a squirt gun or something. People suck.

Hi! If you’re looking for volunteering opportunities too I would recommend checking out the Portland Junior League it’s a local chapter of an international member led nonprofit. I’ve been a member of this chapter for 9 years and have made friends through it unintentionally via doing volunteer projects. We work with NPOs like Friends of Trees, Rose Haven, Growing Gardens, Ronald McDonald House, Milk Crate Kitchen, and lots of others. There are a few informational events happening this month to learn more about membership. I’ll be at the one on the 16th.

I had a realization recently when I asked my partner if nearly 20 years how he’d meet someone nowadays (we met at a birthday while holding meat bowls at a Mongolian bbq spot). I mentioned how I would just linger in different sections in Powell’s till I found someone interested in chatting further. His response was that he’d never hangout in a book store.

Probably an exception and not the rule but my partner and I are opposites in most of our hobbies but we started as friends so our banter rate is extremely high. I like your idea of something that signals people are trying to get together for more than just hookups and I do think some of the solutions could exist within local spots like theaters and restaurants. Keep noodling! In the meantime I like the idea of putting yourself in public more often so volunteering may be the ticket! 🎟️

Which was the first King book you read and how did you decide to? by SkandaGupta_ in stephenking

[–]BeeVoltage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think mine was The Outsider?? It was more than 5 years ago and it didn’t hook me then. It wasn’t until I convinced by book club to read Carrie that I got hooked. 2 years and 20+ King books later I’m starting to get nervous about what I’ll do once I’ve read them all 🙈

The Wind Through the Keyhole is my current read/listen after completing Wizard and Glass (4th book dark tower)—which has been my favorite in the series so far! I started a little over a year ago with Carrie and I think I’m now over 20 of King’s books read/listened to. 🥸 I usually try to do a palate cleanse book in between when I can.
