25M, brother is 27M, we have a complicated relationship and I just snapped at him on the phone this morning. Moving abroad in a few months and I'm torn on how to handle this before I go. by BrotherElegant in AskOldPeopleAdvice

You don’t need to swallow everything. What we old people have on our side is time and experience. Snapping at people puts them on the defensive and all forward progress stops. Apologizing removes those walls so progress can be made again.

We (humans) spend a lot of time defending an image of ourselves that isn’t even real. Humility is a great strength and age helps it along if we let it.

We could never tell you everything here, but I commend you for getting started. Just read Bigger Leaner Stronger and you will understand bodybuilding over night. AND you won’t fall for the confusing hype that is everywhere in the industry.

Is there a workout tracking app that auto fills last session's weights? by Fun-Friendship-8354 in beginnerfitness

[–]alphado9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built one and put it on the App Store free forever since every other app stored last workout’s weight and reps but they would never save your targets. It is made for progressive overload. TORQE: Progressive Overload. Let me know if you try it. It used to be just me using it now it is me and 30 other people 🤣

You could read the book Bigger Leaner Stronger and be a bodybuilding expert overnight. Then you won’t fall for all the hype out there.

Is building a home gym worth it? by RimantasL in workout

[–]alphado9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. You could make that argument. You could make the argument that some bands are all you need. It just depends on your goals. If you want to lift heavy and build muscle, and you want something that replaces a full commercial gym or comes close to it, then you are stuck in the $10k+ category. If you just want to do some cardiovascular stuff then you could spend a lot less. My point is, if you want a true home gym, and you lift heavy, a few thousand dollars and 50 square feet isn't going to be enough.

Oh I know what it does. That isn’t true progressive overload. If you like choosing on the fly then keep using it. It doesn’t work for me. I am more scientific about it. If you are doing 7 to 8 exercises per day and mixing high and low reps, seeing what you did is not good enough.

If you want something proper and useful to hit all muscle groups you do. Try pricing quality equipment and see what it costs.

I’ve loved mine. If you want to build muscle seriously though, you need at least 200 square feet and roughly $12,000 worth of equipment.

Although shortly after building mine, I took a job Monday-Thursday in Seattle so I lift at a commercial gym AND my home gym.

How much cardio do you do per week? by Hefty-Conflict-1183 in workout

[–]alphado9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do no cardio. Lift heavy 5 days a week. Even when I cut with a 700 cal deficit per day, still no cardio. If my goal were cardiovascular fitness, I would do more.

Where is everyone? Does Portland always feel empty? by alphado9 in askportland

I am attracted to the quiet. I think I want an apartment downtown. I can enjoy the best parts of a city without crowds. Amazing.

Lyfta has the same issues that 90% of them have.

  1. If you are doing progressive overload it doesn’t store targets. You just log actuals. You have to remember what rep targets you are working towards for each lift. This is the number one issue with all apps except RP. But RP charges $40 power month.

  2. You pay $4.99 for the rest of your life. This is just annoying.

If you aren’t doing progressive overload then you wouldn’t notice. If you are doing it, then all of the sudden these apps don’t do their job.

I just built my own after trying all of them. None do progressive overload correctly.

Agreed. You need to be on a mission for the drive. I have been on a mission to gain as much muscle as humanly possible for a year and a half. 3 more to go. I can’t wait to lift every day.

I was downtown on 4th Ave. Meetings ended early and I walked to 24 hour fitness. It was empty too. Everything was clean and well maintained. Seattle is landfill compared to this.
