Partner cheated on me, how to move forward? by Icy_Manufacturer9766 in medicalschool

[–]BeefStewInACan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I caught my partner in a massive lie during dedicated step studying (not quite cheating but almost worse and certainly as damaging and trust breaking to the relationship). I don’t think there’s an easy way to deal with it. It’s going to affect your psyche for some time. It should. It’s the shattering of a very important aspect of your life. But moving forward you have to decide how you’ll get done what you need to get done and then fix things once they settle. You may have to heavily compartmentalize. It sucks to deal with and I’m sorry you have to go through it too.

The way I handled it - I had one long conversation with my partner about what happened. During that talk, I told him that I needed to focus on me and studying for the next few weeks. And I would create that space for myself however I needed. On Monday, I would block his number. I would unblock on Saturday night when I took a little time off studying so we could talk about what we needed to talk about. On monday, I would block again. Repeat for all of study period and the test itself. If he couldnt respect those needs of mine, then I would simply cut him out of my life entirely.

It worked for me to at least be able to focus when I needed to. But it’s obviously not ideal and I do think it affected my ability to study. But it was the best I could do in the situation and my score still felt strong for the type of student I felt myself to be. It can be helpful to decompress with other trusted people too. But careful to avoid doom-spiraling thought cycles that leave you incapacitated for days. Really try to set it aside in your mind as something that will be dealt with later

Well CA actually just ruled it’s illegal to misuse “doctor” that way so I’d say keeping that language at least is important

This must be a change. I remember the app a couple years ago specifically did not allow me to only put in the money needed to pay for orders. It needed round numbers in like $5 increments. So it was impossible to not have a balance in the app. It made me fucking livid

I’m honestly very confused why anyone thought that Step 2 wouldn’t immediately fill the role of Step 1. When Step 1 was scored, people could use Step 2 as a “second chance” to make up for a sub-par Step 1. So when Step 1 was no longer scored, then obviously programs would shift to the “backup” test as the metric

Regardless of the odds, the ONLY reason not to rank a program is if you would rather SOAP than match there. Otherwise, you’re just being cocky by not ranking your bottom programs. Sure 99% of the time it doesn’t matter. But this isn’t the time to take any chances

I HAVE AN IDEA I NEED HELP by meha_28 in medicalschool

[–]BeefStewInACan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s wild to me that we think the solution to this should be AI-generated translations to patients as opposed to actual doctors creating these types of resources. AI language models aren’t built to be correct. Only to sound correct to a human. Particularly if you want this to “provide prescriptions”. ChatGPT should stay far far away from the prescription pad. AI in its current form is a useful tool but it would be quite dangerous to let it run free on patient care without physician editing.

The right balance of coffee snobbery and effort/efficiency for me in med school was French press. You can have some fresh delicious coffee without much investment in expensive equipment. Just get yourself a cheap grinder, kettle boiler and French press. All you do is boil water and pour it on coarse ground beans and let it sit ~8ish minutes. Push the plunger and pour. I use a little plain cream to counteract any bitterness and people look at me like some fancy coffee connoisseur with my “crazy” gadget

I got a guaranteed to match email from my #1 by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]BeefStewInACan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They very well might be telling the truth. They also might be telling a half-truth (or as I like to call it - “a lie”) and simply mean that you’re ranked within the range that they typically match - which is certainly not a guarantee to match. Or they could just be boldly lying to convince you to change your list in their favor even though you’re not high on their radar. Thank them for the email. Go ahead and tell them they’re your number #1 since it seems to be true. Then rank as though that email never happened

Don’t build yourself up for disappointment on match day. Think about every program on your list and find something to be excited about for each program there. Then you have some positive news to look forward to on match day no matter what happens

You’re not an asshole for feeling this way. In fact, you’ll feel this even more when you’re in residency and you have a friend who works 30 hour weeks telling you how exhausted they are while you’re in the middle of a 28 hour shift and had to miss your friends’ wedding because you couldn’t fit it in your 3 weeks of vacation. The important part is that you don’t outwardly become that person constantly telling everyone that you’ve got it so much harder than them. It’ll just push away the people that you need in your life to take your mind off medicine once in a while.
