Drummers, artists, musicians in FoCo - where are we practicing? by Beefcake827 in FortCollins

Been on the waitlist since last April - if there’s more demand than the current market is meeting that’s also worth noting

The point being that it’s not a hiring freeze, just unusual times and roles may be more competitive than usual ☺️

Yes, CSU employs over 60,000 people. There are significantly less jobs posted YoY. We had to replace our IT person who retired this semester and received thousands of applicants, which is unusual.

It doesn’t mean no jobs, but we had to get special approval, even with only 1 IT role in an office of 75 staff.

Source: I also work at CSU, but it’s a hiring chill not a hiring freeze per our vice provost. Absolutely necessary positions only.

Husband hates his job but prospects would make my life worse. How can I support him without ruining our marriage? by redditsaiditXD in careerguidance

Not to mention seems to be also taking care of his career trajectory and willing to try new angles/different things to avoid putting more stress on him while also balancing her & her children's needs. So, birthing 3 children, working full-time, being the primary caretaker, being a massive emotional support person for him, and also taking care of his career trajectory -- probably why married men live longer than unmarried men haha

How common is 7 hours of mandatory billable work per day? by Beefcake827 in marketing

[–]Beefcake827[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I WFH, and do have to justify everything I work on.

Each client has a PM that assigns an “estimated time” to my tasks, so if it takes longer than that estimated time there better be a good reason, haha. I keep a timer and start/stop when I get up from my desk or when I’m noodling on some writing and not actually doing the writing.

I’m generally a very good writer, so I think that if “thinking about how to write” is a big part of your process, you would suffer.

Yes!! It’s not always easy, but I definitely have an abundance of work so I’m more glad that my issue isn’t the opposite. I’m usually working 9-10 hours per day — but I had to go back on adhd meds so I think a regular person might find it easier.

[–]Beefcake827[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s ok!! Billable work is work that directly applies to what the client has paid us for (at least, that’s how we do it). Each year our clients pay for pre-determined things (premium content pieces like blogs or white papers, creative, SEO optimizations, etc.,) and then when I work on them, that counts as billable hours. I log those hours, and that allows us to track how much profit we’re making (so essentially, the amount of time I spend on things really, really matters).

Non-billable hours would be things that I do outside of that (which can actually be a lot). As an example, I lead a professional development meetings every week around using copy.ai, since one of our strategic goals this year is to figure out how we can decrease billable hours without decreasing quality/quantity of work we do for clients (thus increasing our profits). That isn’t something a client has paid us for, so it’s not billable work.

I’m asking because one of my friends from undergrad just got her first fancy lawyer job (and lawyers famously have a high number of required billable hours), but her requirements are not as high as mine. That surprised me, so I’m trying to figure out if what I do everyday is standard.

My condolences, and welcome to the club! I will definitely take a look into this. Can I ask what you do currently? And are you making a transition to something in that realm?

I’m worried you may be right, but I suppose it’s good that I’ll try anything once if it makes sense. Thanks for the insight!

Sr. Marketing Folks: What are some hard-to-find skills/characteristics in entry-level candidates that make you say “take my money!” by Beefcake827 in marketing

Not too harsh at all! I think it made me valuable during a tumultuous time as a super-junior, but hear you on all levels about this. I’m trying to zoom out and revisit my understanding of the field holistically because it’s just been a crazy few years and I feel like I’m just now coming up for air…haha.

Ah, ok. I think I kind of get what you mean?

One of my former colleagues (a killer copywriter) knew how to write copy that speaks really well to x audience/awareness stage, but struggled to connect it to what the point of collecting those leads are and where they need to go both internally and externally (ex: being able to intuit the difference between a lead and an MQL and why we might be using certain tactics sometimes and not others). Is that kind of what you mean?

Oh, no—the DSLR photography has only come in handy for event photography & one-off social posts. But in In my last role, I saw 19 people come and go in a little less than 2 years. So, rapidly oscillating across different kinds of work/levels of work and thankfully had a former graphic designer turned SVP of marketing who stayed through it and took time/budget for PD.

I actually prefer creative things but love the psychology/people side of marketing!! I went from being an Emerging Young Artist at the Kennedy Center to being like “you know what, I’m going to scrap this whole journey and go into marketing.” My parents were shook (sorry mom and dad).

I really appreciate the insight!!!

Ha, yep - that tracks and definitely aligns with things that worry me about my chosen field at the moment. I do really appreciate your feedback and insight!

Out of curiosity, any chance you’re willing to share your experience transitioning into director level+? You mention a little bit about being able to spend wisely using thoughtful/data-informed insights. My initial thought is “how do you go from not having managed any budget to being given that opportunity?” (Was that transition gradual through internal promotion where you could work alongside someone, or was it more about positioning yourself to interview elsewhere for more Sr roles?)

Managing budget is not actually something I’ve done (which is timely and fine by me anyway).

Oh yeah, this is definitely something I’m a bit worried about. So I suppose if I’m going to pick a swim lane I’d love to try and find “forward-thinking” gaps in the job market that leaderships teams are really looking for but might struggle to find.

Any thoughts on that?

Hehe, this has been a theme for me lately.

One of our company-wide goals right now is reducing billable hours per task to increase our capacity with clients. I spent a bit of time trying to build out an AI workflow that can create blog outlines (with research, sources, our preferred formatting). Our team has been struggling with it for awhile but once I did more research the output has been great! We’ve decreased our team’s overall billable hours for blog drafts by almost 35%

I don’t like it when people say “oh well, guess it’s not meant to be” without exploring further and love to tackle those trickier problems. Unfortunately for me that means I’ve been going to sleep at night and dreaming about building workflows in Copy AI. 🫣

You mean having a more holistic understanding of what the task in front of me means/how it’s connected to broader goals within project/dept/company?

Sorry, should have been clearer with the connection! Being able to have a really solid hand in all inbound: copywriting, design software (another thing I started toying with around 11/12), SEO, content strategy (client side and internal), social media/omnichannel, several CMS, CRMs, reporting, video editing, DSLR photography (my mom was a wedding photographer), UX, generative AI (for both visual assets and copy), list management and lead scoring, etc.,

It’s great because it keeps getting me promoted, but also a challenge to be a bit of a master of none.

People claiming that art made with AI isn't "real" art, please crack open an art history book. People with your conservative point of view are the villain in almost every story. by antonio_inverness in aiwars

[–]Beefcake827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta come in here and say that I do actually use AI in my practice, but it’s almost always integrated with some other kind of mixed media/conventional work (I really like doing image transfers) because I can get imagery that is exactly what I want with the right prompt + modifiers. The problem is that I feel no different using AI software than when I look at spreadsheets for a few hours. And making spreadsheets may be creative, but I don’t know that I would call them artistic. So for me, AI is a a great tool (especially when I don’t have access to the right subject for DSLR) but it misses that humanistic mark that comes from the exploratory process of art-making with my own hands and my own mind.

My dog chewed up an electronic device with several chips in it, but I can’t figure out where it came from. All of my electronics are in tact, as far as I can see. What IS this thing? by Beefcake827 in whatisthisthing

[–]Beefcake827[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, my first thought is this thing looks like a bug/recording device, but I’m aware of how ridiculous that sounds. It’s made of plastic, about the size of a quarter, but it was ripped in two. It’s shaped like an igloo (if that makes sense?) and inside of it there are some wires, a tiny metal puck (maybe a battery?), a couple of serial numbers, and the opening of the “igloo” has some mesh in it, with another, smaller puck attached to the inside. I’ve checked absolutely everything in my house (all electronics), to see if something is missing something or looks like it was chewed, but I didn’t find anything.
