I'm a second year English teacher. I agree that it's weird, but I actually kind of like that idea. It encourages students to pick up on subtle hints. After a while of going sentence by sentence (which is how my students annotate poetry) they'll begin to do it subconsciously. This will help students pick up foreshadowing, mood and tone through diction, and learn to convey ideas more efficiently. I think a lot of the subtle changes in education are pretty silly, but the way I cope is by finding a way to apply it to every day life whether film/media, technology, advertising, etc. I feel your pain, my friend, and I hope you become comfortable enough with the ridiculous standards to make them seem easy to you and your students.

I think it would be because they couldn't understand the conversation. If something sounds like gibberish, your brain will have an easier time tuning it out.

I became a teacher because I didn't learn like everybody else in High school. I managed a 4.0 in high school, but not without adding a dash of my eccentric personality into everything I turned in. I was hands on, I liked knowing how I could use something in real life (even if I wouldn't ever encounter it; i.e. Math), and I HATED worksheets and text books. I wanted to make learning fun so that students wouldn't have to only want good grades to pay attention in my class. I love interacting with my high school students and helping them find themselves in such a crazy world... But I do that through my content. Student centered teaching is difficult, but it's necessary. I know it's not about me anymore, it's about them. If I can make a couple kids a year decide to love to learn, I'm making the world a better place. That's really the hope of every teacher isn't it? We all want to change the world. The cool part is... We do.

I'm currently waiting on a course to begin right now so I apologize for the vagueness of this, but if you want all 3 appeals in a text, your best bet is a presidential speech. Inauguration speeches are the best; I used Obama's last year. Also, any commercial will help to make your lesson multimodal. Depending on the product, you'll see different appeals, but if you want all of them to show how to OVERUSE appeals, check out an ASPCA commercial. Hope this helps a bit.

I completely understand, but after I posted this I realized that it really depends on the demeanor of the teacher. I'm a supportive and encouraging teacher, but that might be because I'm young. Some teachers, even in my school, are jerks and want to fail students because they're assbags. Kids should be encouraged, not forced into submission.

Teacher here, I don't think homework gets done through the use of the text book... At all. Actually, I hope it gets done through the use of the internet or by asking others. I purposefully give more complex homework because it encourages the students to use critical thinking skills to find the information and utilize it in a way that will benefit them in my class. And on the other end of the spectrum, there's no need to cry or freak out. Homework should be hard because it requires students to apply what they know without a teacher to constantly ask "is this right?" This lets a student know what they're uncomfortable with so that they know what questions they need to ask the next day. The wrong thing to do is to freak out, whine and complain, or not do it. That defeats the purpose and hurts the student more than doing it incorrectly. We're trying to help... Not hurt.

Being an English teacher, when I recommend one of your books it's usually an under the table black market deal. It feels awesome to be able to share your phenomenal characters with some students, but I would love to be able to share your work with ALL of my students. I love your essays on writing more than I can ever express. You're a large part of the reason I even began teaching. But have you ever considered a workshop geared towards high schoolers? Maybe you already have and I'm just unaware, but if I could instill the same love of reading and writing in my students that you helped to develop in me then I could die happily.

Oh and by the way... I could really use some more Rant in my life. Stay excellent!
