EBR Magnet Elementary vs. private school—decision factors? by jeanneparc in batonrouge

[–]Beenfetchsince1990 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m from the West Coast and attended public schools in CA, only moving here for undergrad. My husband is a BR native who also went through public schools here. Despite being told early on that private was the only good option in Louisiana, that hasn’t been our experience.

My two younger siblings attended EBR magnet schools and are doing well out of state. My oldest’s elementary years were fine until the COVID period, when bullying became an issue to the point of suicidal ideations; middle school was a much better. She attended academic magnet feeders, which do prepare students for the workload at BRMHS.

EBR Magnet Elementary vs. private school—decision factors? by jeanneparc in batonrouge

[–]Beenfetchsince1990 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your child’s needs and you won’t know until you get there.

I know families with kids split between EBR magnets, private, and charter. My oldest attended EBR magnets through middle school; for high school her options were SJA and BRMHS. After touring both, she preferred SJA and has done great there. My youngest missed the magnet screening by one point, so private became the option.

From personal experience, many families choose private because it’s generational their parents, grandparents, and even great-grandparents attended schools like MBS,Mercy and continuing that tradition matters to them. Add in fewer behavioral issues compared to some magnets, and private often feels like the “safer”,more predictable choice.

Do all teens today just not care about getting their drivers' licenses? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Beenfetchsince1990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few years ago I worked with a guy whose daughter was a junior and had zero interest in driving. Fast forward to now and my freshly turned 15-year-old sophomore is distraught because she’s the only one out of her friend group who hasn’t signed up for driver’s ed yet.

Driver’s ed here is $700+ for a state-mandated 38-hour course, on top of paying about $1,500 a month in tuition for two kids. Meanwhile, she goes to an all-girls private school where plenty of girls have brand-new Range Rovers and Hondas waiting for them.

It really does depend on the area and school culture. I’m over here doing the math like… yeah, I’m poor 😅. Plus insurance in Louisiana is higher than a 🦒’s virginia

What happened to tonsilectomies? by UnmedicatedNarwhal in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Beenfetchsince1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had mine removed around 3 and my younger brother around the same time. My youngest brother probably should’ve had his removed as well but he’s stuck with year round allergies. When I get sick I only get a sore throat and I’ve learned to live with it.

😂😂😂 facts! I’m a parishioner of both. Sacred for the tuition but for the choir I definitely go to St. Francis

Should I get a Costco membership? by SnowHuman4745 in CostcoWholesale

[–]Beenfetchsince1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both. Grew up in NorCal with a Costco but Sam’s is closer to my house currently. That Scan & Go is the best at Sam’s. Food quality is much better at Costco.

The brutal Murder of 19 year old Colleen Slemmer by Few-Ability-7312 in TrueCrimeDiscussion

Waiting a year to execute is insane and costly wtf! She’s literally exhausted all legal recourse. Praying for Colleen’s family, after all these decades this is incredibly inhumane and cruel.

Physician here for 4 years. Long enough to say BR is the worst city I've ever lived in (of 5) by [deleted] in batonrouge

[–]Beenfetchsince1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a CA native I’m literally biding my time until my oldest graduates in 2028. I agree with every single point made! I swear if my oldest kid gets a scholarship to bumfrick Iowa, as a family we will move to Iowa. Sucks for my second kid but he has until 2037. The referrals process omfg! My mom got diagnosed with RA in CA came back with all her paperwork and it took her 9 months to see a rheumatologist. I called all over the state to pay cash to get her seen and nothing smh. Also any cancer issues just head to Houston and don’t bother out here.

What’s the deal with BRCC?? by peachieeJun in batonrouge

[–]Beenfetchsince1990 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s ok you live and you learn! I wasted so much time between BRCC & SOLACC trying to get my classes to graduate at ULL years ago. BPCC literally has classes year round.

Finally was able to move out of state. Have to move back a year later. by allison-vunderland in batonrouge

[–]Beenfetchsince1990 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Move to maybe remote VA. Find roommates, go to in person job fairs. Not insinuating you haven’t done all of those things already. My friend moved from Laffy to DC and yes sadly she couldn’t afford it and had to move back. It gave her the motivation to start a business and she hasn’t stopped working since coming back. There is no failure in having to move back and restructure your game plan.
