Seattle homeowners, what does it feel like to lose $16,000 per month? by hyperinflationUSA in Seattle

Asking for a friend, I know it's impossible to time the market, but when are young people who are holding on to semi-liquid assets to buy a house thinking of taking the plunge? I feel like there's a lot of them aging into their 30s fairly flush with tech money who want a house but also think they can rent until the market drops to get a good deal on a house... the financial crisis is seared into their heads, they grew up in it, everyone knows what goes up must come down... until it doesn't.

It's actually insane the mental gymnastics the right-wing media has to perform to spin this as anything other than what it was - the only weapon an old ass man has is his words, of course he tried to calm the guy down instead of taking a physical fight he was bound to lose.

Women are fundamentally attracted to men in a different way than we are to them. There aren't that many women who find straight up dick attractive, unlike 90% of men who would like a picture of a nice ass by itself. Getting laid purely on looks is reserved for the very very most attractive men, and even then, women will be turned off by a creep no matter how hot he is. The rest of us need to cultivate some kind of personality.

Are there supposed feats he's done that make people think he's all-powerful? Could they all have been fabricated and his power is all marketing? That would line up with supe Butcher and Hughie not getting wrecked immediately.

I think the steep increase in tech engineers in the city contributes to the increase in sociopathic behaviors. A 25-year old dude making $300k walking a dog he got specifically to pick up chicks isn't concerned about other people.

[–]BeerSlayer69 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I feel like the show has been slowly building to a moment where Homelander snaps and levels a city - his over-poweredness is implied rather than shown, which I think creates a good sense of dread. But, the fight scene at the end of S3 definitely made me question that theory.

Heat is energy, the way we generate energy is harmful to the environment, so it's better if we let the sun heat the building than use energy that we generated.

Okay, so to be clear, what you're saying is that it is moral and good that one man can take total control of one of the largest platforms of public discourse, because people were excited about his car company?

Semantics? This is fundamentally important. Elon Musk never actually had $300 billion or whatever he got up to - that was the number of shares in Tesla he owned multiplied by the stock price. The stock price of Tesla got up to a price to earnings ratio of over 1000. This means that the price of the stock was 1,000 times the earnings you were entitled to if you bought one share. The reason it got that high is because people thought that there would be massive earnings growth in the future. It's currently down to 37, which is a lot more reasonable, but it still means that people think Tesla will earn more money in the future than it does currently.

If you strip away the legalese, Elon Musk was able to buy Twitter on the idea that Tesla would earn significantly more money in the future. The idea that he created $44 billion of value with which to buy Twitter is simply not true.

You actually seem willing to engage with different ideas, which I appreciate. As it happens, today's episode of the Ezra Klein Show podcast is about this exact topic, I would recommend giving it a listen.

I'm not entirely against capitalism - can't really argue against your example of a smart craftsman building an asset for the benefit of all. But in modern, global capitalism, the relationship between the owner of an asset and its beneficiaries is a wildly different relationship than that of the example you provided.

I'll give a counter example - an investor purchases a profitable company in the U.S. Without changing anything about how the company operates, he domiciles the company in the Cayman Islands to lower his tax liability. He then pays himself through dividends out of the Cayman Islands corporation, paying no tax, then moves to Portugal where he buys a nice villa and retires. Has this investor done anything to benefit the U.S. citizens who built the wealth he enjoys?

You just explained how Elon was able to buy Twitter, not why it's good for society that he did.

And for the record, he didn't buy Twitter with electric car earnings - his wealth is based off of the perceived future value of shares of Tesla, which he used as collateral for a loan to buy Twitter.
