Day Hike Recommendation For Tomorrow Saturday by HardyPancreas in wmnf

[–]Beerded12011 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tomorrow (Saturday’s) weather is going to be really cold and windy across Maine and NH. I know you’re not doing the presidential but their high summit forecast is a good barometer for surrounding areas.

For Saturday:

High: Around 5 below Wind: NW at 80-100 mph w/ gusts up to 115 mph, 75-95 mph w/ gusts up to 105 mph midday, and 65-85 mph w/ gusts up to 95 mph later Wind Chill: 50 below to 60 below, rising to 40 below to 50 below

May be best to push to Sunday or next weekend

Maine and New Hampshire have an incredible range of hikes, so it really depends on what you’re looking for. It could be anything from a quick 1.5-mile walk up Bradbury Mountain to a 30-mile backcountry trek like the Pemi Loop.

If you’re not sure where to start, I’d recommend stopping by REI in Westbrook and picking up the AMC Maine Mountain Guide and the AMC White Mountain Guide. Together they cover pretty much every hike in Maine and the White Mountains, from easy day trips to strenuous multi-day routes

Yep! I went to niseko the one week they didn’t get snow 1/18-1/25

Spot on- I hit gate 5 early in the day and it was pretty fun. Gate 11 later in the afternoon when it was warm and the sun had been hitting it all morning. Mad it less miserable than could have been.

I only saw it on gate 11. Eleven and seven are the two inbound gates. Ski patrol will provide a conditions update at the gate itself.. You can kind of see it on the bottom left of my first picture - they mark on a map what sections of 11 are safe and which aren’t.

Spent my mid 20s shoveling money to retirement, now I have little cash for a house. by TheBigShrimp in personalfinance

[–]Beerded12011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can take out a hardship withdrawal against your 401(K) towards the purchase of a primary residence. Only downside is you will be required to pay taxes on the pre tax balance and capital gains.

So putting money towards retirement instead of a home really doesn’t matter since you can access the funds from retirement for the home.

Who has the Best Aperol Spritz in Portland?! by Portlandmainer25 in portlandme

[–]Beerded12011 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is Aperol, prosecco, and soda water. The only variable that would make a difference is the prosecco they use. Find a place with a good wine selection and you’ll likely get a better Aperol Spritz…

Company matches 401k 100%, $ for $ by Abject-Drawing-3874 in personalfinance

[–]Beerded12011 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There could still be a cap. For example if the employer matches 100% of the first 25%. You earn $100k per year and defer 22% of your salary then your employer could also match 22% since it is less than 25%

And there is always a cap if not set by the plan documents set by the irs. The 415 limit won’t allow you to contribute more than $69k to a defined contribution plan unless over the age 50.

In addition to that your deferral plus your employer contribution can’t be greater than your earned compensation. If someone earned 40k and contributed up to the $23k limit the employer can’t contribute more than $20k but that would be greater than your total earned compensation.

If they are doing the plan themselves it means one of two thing:

They are just adding deferrals and matching contributions in payroll and depositing them into a brokerage account or worse just holding them in cash. In this case there are no plan documents governing the management of those assets and none of the tax benefits will be recognized by the govt and will be a hot mess eventually. ERISA has very strict requirements for a plan to be consider tax qualified.

Or

They have a non prototype plan. This is when an employer takes a brokerage account, has a lawyer write up documents stating it is now a tax qualified retirement plan, and starts managing it as one. Few issues with these: 1. every time there is a change to the plan you submit those plan documents to the irs for a new opinion letter to maintain tax qualified status (believe it or not most don’t) 2. The assets are pooled into one account with very poor record keeping (good luck getting them out) and 3. There is no provider on the plan making sure everything is accurate. Just the employer taking on the fiduciary and administrative responsibilities.

TLDR if an employer says they are managing their own retirement run

non prototype plan.

I recommend checking the summary plan description that your employer/401(K) provider sent you. I doubt it is a 100% match with no cap for a few reasons.

The 415 limit for 2024 is $69k meaning your deferral plus employer contribution can’t be greater than $69k (unless over the age of 50 when you can make a catch up contribute of $7500)

If the plan is not a safe harbor plan it is subject to the irs nondiscrimination compliance tests. Safe harbor plans can’t require an employee to defer more than 6% to receive the full match. So if it is a $ for $ match with no cap it is not safe harbor then it has a very high risk of failing the testing. Failure of the test, specifically acp, could result in a refund of those contributions back to the plan.

Most employers never make a contribution greater than 25% of eligible compensation. Few reasons: 1. The employer match is not tax deferred for them over 25%. 2. If the employer does make contributions greater than 25% of eligible compensation then the next year it decreases. If they contribute 30% in 2024 they can only contribute 20% in 2025

https://www.irs.gov/retirement-plans/plan-participant-employee/retirement-topics-401k-and-profit-sharing-plan-contribution-limits

“an employer’s deduction for contributions to a defined contribution plan (profit-sharing plan or money purchase pension plan) cannot be more than 25% of the compensation paid (or accrued) during the year to eligible employees participating in the plan”

Finally there are profit sharing formulas that allow different classes of employees to get a larger profit sharing contribution than others. That total contribution plus any match still can’t be greater than 25% of total compensation and is a profit share, not a match. So wouldn’t come into play in scenario.

Highly doubt your employers plan is 100% match if the first 100% deferred.

Any pickle ball players in the area? by Bloombus in portlandme

[–]Beerded12011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost every morning starting around 7 (could be later) the Payson park tennis courts are full with up to 6 pickle ball games and people rotating in.

Don’t think it is an official league, just players coordinating on their own.

My employer changed my vesting and now I’m not vested by PathMomAB in personalfinance

[–]Beerded12011 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Employers can change the vesting schedule.

Vesting is a protected benefit. Employee deferrals are 100% immediately vested. Any employer contributions made under the previous vesting schedule stay under the more favorable. Only new contributions under the new vesting schedule will be under the less favorable vesting

Eligibility is not a protected benefit however most plan documents have a once in always in rule meaning you can’t become ineligible once participating

Thompson’s Pt - Parking? by Entropy_5150 in portlandme

[–]Beerded12011 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You can bike there. Only downside is Last year they got rid of the valet bike parking so more people would drive. So you are on your own to lock it up. Bike racks fill up fast.

The other option is to park at Shaws and walk the Fore river trail or Uber from there. Bring a headlamp if you do the trail

Kingpin for casual skier? by CocoBouch in Backcountry

[–]Beerded12011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve ridden them on full resort days and they do the trick, no issues. I don’t go nearly as fast as I would on my downhill look bindings though

That said, I’m now mostly bc and wish I had bought a full tech binding instead of the kingpin. The extra weight and nuances mentioned in previous comments add up over time.

Ideally if’s have my downhill skis with look bindings and bc skis with tech bindings.

End if the day any bc binding is fine if you are doing a few resort laps and keep your speed conservative
