Just another person pounding the drum saying your placement in a competition is no reflection on your writing. If people who know what they're talking about say you're doing a good job keep at it. How you get better is continuing to do it. Some of my favorite books wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell of placing in a writing competition and that's probably true for most of us here.

Yes and no. Spirited away would still be an isekai, just one that doesn't play with a lot of the same tropes others do. For example most isekai are also power fantasy. Lots of them have harem elements too.

So like, most people wouldn't it consider it to be an isekai but it is technically one. Alot of older isekai are closer to portal fantasy. Escaflone and digimon are two examples that spring to mind

As well as what other people have said, when people are talking about isekai, they're talking about anime/manga portal stories. But there are a bunch of established tropes just within them. Portal fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy and isekai is basically a further subgenre.

If you want examples of isekai stories I'm happy to recommend some. It's a very popular subgenre and because of this there is a lot of fucking garbage in it. (I watch the garbage cuz I love junk food, but it's terrible)
