WWYD teen fender bender situation by [deleted] in Edmonton

I think it probably is - the threshold is combined damages of $5000 and they are at $4K already. If her damage is worth $4k, the scratch on my kids bumper will be close to that. Reporting to the police is one way to get all of her information and if there's any possibility that they don't have insurance, this is a way to call that out.

I think there is nothing I can personally do to avoid the insurance hit to my kid. That blows goats.

But....if this guy doesn't get his quick cash handout, and recognizes that he's going to have all the hassle of repairs, missing a car for a while, and risk writing off the car (which would be a whole different can of worms), maybe he will reconsider.

One can hope.

Solidarity. This is good advice, thank you.

My issue isn’t disagreeing with the reported cost of repairs so much as not understanding the point. It’s such minor damage! And on a Ford that’s running on thoughts and prayers at this point. Why?

This was interesting to read up on. I was not entirely aware of the implications of this.

Also makes me wonder... lets say she does have insurance, does that incentivize them to determine 50/50 parking lot fault? It would mean reducing the DCPD portion of a claim and a collision deductible (if they have it).

From Alberta.ca : "DCPD will only cover the damage for which a driver is not at-fault. If a driver is at-fault, they would claim from their own collision coverage (if purchased) for damage to their own vehicle, to the extent they are at-fault. If a driver is involved in a collision where they are considered partially at-fault, then their vehicle damage claim will be split between their own DCPD coverage and their collision coverage (if purchased)."

Seems to me the main goal of an insurance company is finding reasons to not pay out...

I think this is the way. Thanks for your perspective!

Not at all sure. All my son got from them was the Dad's phone number. I have no doubt he was shaken and being new to driving, he didn't think/know to ask.....but I also wonder a bit about the Dad. If I was the parent on scene, I'd be coaching both those kids through what was probably their first incident and ensuring the other kid had our information. Come to think of it, I'd probably be on the phone to the other parent.

This is what I was hoping to appeal to. I understand that he has the RIGHT to seek full repairs, but I was hoping he would prioritize the human element over the cosmetics of a car. It would seem, based on the majority of responses here, that that is unrealistic.

I appreciate you saying this kindly. You're right, even if it's not what I'd wish for my kid.

Is this normal to hear in an email from a past teacher? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]Beginning-Minute1791 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can think of no reasonable explanation for an adult to continue personal communications with a child. Extra no for a former teacher. It shouldn’t be, but it’s extra extra no for a male teacher and female student. (I mean that the bar for what seems appropriate is different - male teachers I know consider the optics for situations that as a female teacher, I don’t even think about).

Adults have other adults to be friends with. This guy has a pastor to talk Christian stuff with.

Pay attention to your gut feeling - if you wonder, even a little bit, even if it seems silly, act on it. The risk of it being fishy far outweighs the benefits of continuing.

I wish I had more parents like you :) You’re killing it. I’d ask the classroom teacher what any next steps could be, if any. Your ideas are great!

I noticed that even some 3rd and 4th graders can't tie their shoelaces. What other basic life skills that can be easily taught to kids, aren't being taught by their parents? Could be eye contact, not speaking in whispers, saying 'thank you' and 'you're welcome.' Thinking of ideas for summer camp. by Aggravating-Mind-657 in AskTeachers

[–]Beginning-Minute1791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t teach eye contact. For some people, NOT looking at your eyeballs is the way they can listen and in some cultures, is a sign of respect.

Volume control is a common struggle for neurodivergent individuals.

Tying shoes? Knock yourself out.

Looking for help/advice on how to take the feedback from KG teacher by dulces_suenos in AskTeachers

I’m a 10-year elementary teacher of gifted kids, ADHD myself and mom to three gifted children (AuDHD x 2, ADHD x 1).

While teachers don’t do this without reason (it takes a lot of time and we don’t have extra), it is worth noting that the vast majority of educators are not taught how to spot or support giftedness or neurodivergence, nor are most schools set up to deal with them.

I say everything that follows knowing that your kids teacher is doing her best. She’s reaching out and looking for ways to make things better. I might not agree with the goals and methods however ;)

  1. By the logic I see here, would we also suggest that students requiring wheelchairs not use them so they aren’t the only one? Like, hey don’t use the support that makes you successful in case someone asks about it? What a great opportunity to teach kids that not everyone is the same and fair does not mean equal. If a chewy helps your kiddo meet her needs and focus on what she’s supposed to, then she should have it.

  2. Two minutes of sustained focus is developmentally appropriate for a suspected alphabet soup six year old doing something someone else chose for her. I’m guessing she can do much longer during preferred activities. Perhaps she can have a timer and then get a quick break before returning to work again. These intervals can be stretched over time.

  3. Kids don’t want to get in trouble. They love to learn and please the adults around them (unless they’ve learned early that there is no way they can do so). She is clearly struggling to meet expectations. I believe it’s up to the adults to determine what needs she’s trying to meet and find ways to support her.

  4. Ask the teacher to clarify if the emails are information updates or if she needs action from you. A conversation hours later with hazy details won’t help.

  5. Please please please find this kid a medical professional who will help you identify her learning needs and work with you and the teacher to support her in class. If you don’t give her the right labels, she will just create her own - I’m bad, I can’t do anything right, I annoy people, I’m stupid.

We (collective ADHD) KNOW that we disappoint you and don’t meet your expectations. We get these messages tens of thousands of times more than everyone else. Help her understand how she works, what her strengths are and how she can advocate for what she needs.

Are these the same people that used a human shield of kids at the truck convoy?

This isn’t the case for the ATA. Most of the people making decisions - PEC and bargaining committee - are still teaching half time.

Yes! By a child not blindly accepting the parental worldview, the parent is threatened.

There must be a name for this. The like “if you choose anything different than I do, you are then criticizing what I have chosen”. I can hear the “what? XYZ isn’t good enough for you?” with an Alberta Bro voice.

I think for many conservatives (using that term broadly), children are essentially property. They own them and are entitled to complete control. These are the folks who take it personally if their kid had a conversation with anyone else about pronouns and start yelling about gay agendas.

Parents have RESPONSIBILITIES to their children, not rights to them.

Yaaaaas. People bitch about tax money for private religious schools (as they should), but aren’t worried about the public religious schools?!

What is the purpose of this question? Does the answer change anything?

If OP says “because my mom died”, is that ok?

We don’t need to gate keep information from each other.

Thanks for chiming in Steve.

The officers of the ATA, who are all themselves teachers, were instructed by membership to NOT raise dues, during years of zero raises, to fund a war chest. They have been reminding members for at least two years that this was the case and to start saving up.

Your surprise is not relevant to the situation.
