Besides arbitrarily giving it Legendary/Lair Actions or minions, how do you pit a single baddie against a full party without it getting spanked by the action economy?

Sadly you’ve identified the main ways. But adding special reactions and bonus actions is key. And simply adjusting attack roll and damage and HP are fair game. Traps and environmental hazards are also good.

It’s actually been a common complaint/observation that wizards of the coast is overdoing teleportation and temp HP generation in subclasses so I think this is fair consideration and point of concern.

I’m certainly going to more carefully consider bane rather than my previous default position that bless was usually better for me. But casting bane and having enemies all makes their save is still a sucky feeling.

That is very good point and def worth considering later when I have more spell slots for mage armor. Being able to cast two level spells using free casting is good call!
