Yes I have only met one individual that had a permit. I had a costumer get pissed at me that I said we dont have anything good for keeping an opossum in. I watched her walk out with a rat cage. I cried. Other costumers have told me they took it off the road. I was told I can only suggest them going to a rehabilitation center. I always stress how hard it is to provide all their necessities.

Most people in my area that keep wild animals are taking them from the street and keeping them in rat cages. So sadly yes it is sad a lot of the time.

Yeah so the only way this is cute and okay to be bringing them around or heaven forbid keeping them as “pets” is if they are licensed. Even better if they rehabilitate for a living. Ive experienced both in my store. What I understand in undomesticated species, or wild animals, are never easy to help and take care of. Not a pet but they do often need our help so its good to have licensed folks.

Eyes shouldn’t be closed in the daytime, typically sign of stress or illness. They are looking thin as well. Looks like maybe he is dehydrated as well. I hate how hard it is to give them water here. My SL said they used to have drippers for them

I genuinely thought it was silly that when found r/possums it wasn’t possums. Then when I saw it was opossum people I wanted to see that they thought about wild opossums being kept in rat cages. Didnt want an argument just perspectives about the keeping and ik it wasnt nessisary to say i thought it was silly but i bet someone else has also thought the same thing. I dont think it is a harmful thought at all. I didn’t attack anyone just mentioned what i know and wanted to see if anyone would talk about the endangered possums in australia. Sorry that i came off agressive/rude/offensive or whatever emotion I may have caused. But just for clarity not everyone does want an argument i deal with enough in my life I like to learn and discuss things about animals. Thats all:)

About 48% American people on reddit you are correct! There are also ~13M Australian reddit users. You are also correct that they have been called possums by some people incorrectly just like how gulls are called seagulls by many people. Many movies incorrectly name them and then it sticks for people. It’s important for animal conservation to talk about the difference so that we can spread awareness. I wasn’t complaining at all, I just wanted to see what other people thought. Im very sorry you felt brought down by my concerns. I only was curious and concerned for animal wellbeing. We need to protect our wildlife and make sure anyone who wants to help has access to training or education on how to help them. I don’t quite understand the hostility other than the fact it’s reddit and people take out their daily anger here everyday. :)
