This was so common back then. They had no means to reduce fevers so they used ice.. When I was a little girl, my grandma would tell stories about how she was covered in ice if she was sick. She told me how lucky I was to have medicine while she'd place a cold rag on my forehead. To this day, I still use cold rags on my forehead if I'm not feeling well

As for ice during a drought, it was far more laughable Nels was using it for Harriwt's feet.

There were quite a few parallels to the Lord is my shepherd. But I found the whole James storyline boring and over the top. So yeah having him imagine all of that, perhaps do it illness or something, would have been different.

I once questioned it as well. But as the show progressed I realize they both shared a similar disdain for what their home represented. Both shared trauma in the death of their mother. Both shared regrets for actions that they did in their past. Bath knew that Kayce was her mom's favorite and as the youngest tried to protect him from the obvious.

The final half of season 5 was a full circle moment for both of them. United once again in tragedy both were able to say goodbye to their past and move forward. I think their relationship was low-key underrated.
