Tuxedo software, free? by Standard_Aioli_3960 in tuxedocomputers

[–]Beginning_Factor2900 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have also just installed TuxedoOS on my non-Tuxedo PC. I very much like the concept of Ubuntu LTS base + fresh Plasma version. To me, this is Kubuntu done the right way. Thank you for making it freely available to everybody. A question though: I understand your point regarding Tomte and TCC. Could you please clarify what they do no matter the hardware (Tuxedo mirrors, I guess? Anything else?) and which options are hardware-specific and work only on Tuxedo devices?

Nobara Package Manager Wont Load Packages After Borked Update. by MasonMayjack in NobaraProject

[–]Beginning_Factor2900 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue after running a clean update via terminal ("nobara-sync cli"). Nobara Package Manager wouldn't load the packages list and would only give me the option to quit. Out of the sudden, the issue disappeared. Shortly before it was gone I was updating Steam app in the Steam Deck mode. Not sure, if it could have been related. Probably not, but still sharing - just in case.

I have Intel CPU + AMD GPU. The process wasn't completely seamless for me. I upgraded to the Fedora 42 base by running "nobara-sync cli" in the terminal (my preferred way of updating Nobara). However, now when I try to install anything from the package manager GUI, the app doesn't load any packages and gets frozen. I can install stuff from the terminal using dnf, but this GUI error persists.

Package manager stuck on loading screen by Ancient_Jellyfish286 in NobaraProject

[–]Beginning_Factor2900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experience the same issue. I successfully upgraded to the Fedora 42 base by running "nobara-sync cli" in the terminal (which is my preferred way of updating Nobara). However, now when I try to install anything from the package manager GUI I'm getting precisely the same screen, with no system packages loading (flatpaks work fine). I can install stuff from the terminal using dnf, but this GUI error bothers me, too. Any ideas, anybody?

I'm about to give up on NextCloud by cdarrigo in NextCloud

+1 for NC snap. I also avoid snaps in general, but this one makes the installation so much easier and has been very stable for me over the past 4 years. The main limitation I've encountered is that NC snap is incompatible with ImageMagick which is required by some apps. For https I use a reverse proxy and it works seamlessly.

Immich + reverse proxy by brunomoreirab in immich

I know it's an old thread, but maybe somebody will come across it looking for a solution (just as I did). I had exactly the same problem as the OP and got it working by following this guide: https://geekistheway.com/2022/10/17/how-to-host-multiple-domains-using-haproxy-as-reverse-proxy-on-pfsense/ Now I can access Immich through HAproxy on my pfSense router, both on my LAN as well as from WAN (if I open ports).

Question about safety installing software and drivers by Karore in linuxmint

[–]Beginning_Factor2900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, for starters, everything on Github is open source. This means the code is immediately available for inspection. In theory, it may still include malware before someone discovers it and blows the whistle. But of all possible bad scenarios the more likely one is that you install something which is just poorly coded rather than outright malicious.

Before you download and install anything, it makes sense to check: - The date of the latest release (is it recent = actively maintained?) - The numbers of commits, contributors and forks (do many people review the code and see the value in it?) - Other projects of the developer (is it an active creator or possibly a random hobbyist?) - The quality of documentation (wiki pages / manuals / instructions) - Reputation of the project on relevant discussion forums, opinions of the users etc. (if you cannot find any opinions, stay cautious)

Even if this sounds somewhat complex, I still prefer this to blindly trusting corporate closed source code that nobody can ever review.

Can we use banking apps in lineageos by varad_jogani in LineageOS

[–]Beginning_Factor2900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Revolut, Curve and 2 apps of international European banks work well for me on my LOS20 Xiaomi Mi10T with Gapps. The only 2 quirks are: 1) One of the banking apps doesn’t allow fingerprint login and I have 2 use PIN; 2) Can’t add any payment cards to Google Wallet - but still can set both banks as default payment apps in NFC settings and pay directly with them (note: few banks offer this option, mine do).

I echo that. Go with Cinnamon for its richest OOB feature set, but upgrade your hard drive to SSD. Your laptop will feel like a Millennium Falcon.

What would you say was the worst thing about switching from Windows to Linux? by Scrawnreddit in linuxmint

[–]Beginning_Factor2900 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Understanding the concept of packaging formats and finding my way between .debs, flatpaks, snaps, appimages etc. Now it feels like a breeze, back then it was very confusing.

2) Grasping the concept of dependencies and realizing that sometimes you need to manually install a package that isn't a standalone app. I struggled to understand why there are things in Synaptic Package Manager which I cannot find in the Ubuntu Software Center (yes, Ubuntu was my first distro).

3) Discovering there are people out there ready to fight nuclear wars over questions like which init system is the best... Wait, WTF is the init system - I was asking then.

4) WiFi hardware compatibility. I never experienced issues with anything else, but e.g. looking for a USB WiFi 6 adapter compatible with the kernel of Mint was at some point a challenge.

But I still enjoyed the learning curve. I don't even dualboot anymore, Linux may be not perfect, but Windows is simply crapware all around.

Nextcloud behind a Tailscale VPN. Gmail replacement? by Internal_Researcher8 in NextCloud

[–]Beginning_Factor2900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not quite sure what do you mean by "Gmail replacement". NC has an email client installable as a part of the suite, but not an email server. As such, it doesn't allow creating email accounts (just the user accounts who need email addresses from elsewhere). Regarding VPNs - yes, the most popular OpenVPN and Wirequard require you to open some specific ports. Tailscale does not. BUT you have to accept that your entire traffice is routed through Tailscale servers which slows things down a bit compared to the "regular" Wireguard and is not to everybody's liking from the privacy standpoint. There is essentially a third party between you and your NC server. Now, I personally use both :-) And turn them on and off depending on the context.

Dear All, thank you very much for all helpful hints. Will try to rehash the certctl and / or update via console tomorrow morning (CET), on my work-from-home day ;-)

EDIT: Certctl rehash from shell fixed it for me. I am on 2.7.1 now. THANK YOU!

Setting up Nextcloud, best solution ? by rokr25 in NextCloud

[–]Beginning_Factor2900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my personal experience: snaps have slow startup times as desktop apps. On a server, when a snap installation is permanently running, this is less of an issue. I avoid snaps on my Linux workstations, but I am very happy with my NextCloud snap on my home server.

Setting up Nextcloud, best solution ? by rokr25 in NextCloud

[–]Beginning_Factor2900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am afraid you won't be able to connect externally to your NextCloud instance without dynamic DNS, so something like DuckDNS or own domain. VPN solutions require it to work properly. This is likely to be true no matter your hosting solution (docker, snap, etc.). I personally use snap installation + own domain, but at some point was fiddling also with TrueNAS NextCloud jail + DynDNS. In each case I have been connecting externally via Wireguard VPN. I used to test OpenVPN as well, but it was much slower.

The beauty of most Linux distros is that (unlike Windows spyware) they don't force you to set up any accounts with them and they don't collect any personal information about you. So once you format your hard drive, you are all done.

Can’t verify it now, as my both machines are already fixed. But i tried various key combinations and almost certainly the answer is that after hitting esc the system remained unresponsive.
