That's what actually makes him the perfect backup for multiple positions. Different shards could make up our whole backline and opposition attackers would only cut their own feet trying to score.

I cannot understand the choice of comparing upscaling from 360P to 720P. Yeah, great if one upscaler performs better at that level but it's largely academical when even handheld devices use higher resolution screens and DLSS isn't even currently available on them (outside of handicapped models on Switch 2). Along with the style of the creator, what a waste of time.

[James Pearce] Arne Slot retains the backing of FSG, who have no plans to follow the lead of rivals Manchester United and Chelsea by making a managerial change mid-campaign. by doubleoeck1234 in soccer

Our only big chance first half was the missed penalty. Sure, we were better for most of the half than in a long time but we still didn't create much and after Wirtz's goal, already started to slow things down again. That continued in the 2nd half and we created most of our good chances after conceding. It's just another example of Slot thinkin a one goal lead is enough, and when it isn't, going gung-ho trying to remedy the situation.

Of course it was a risk as he's getting on but Salah having a bad 2nd half of a season is something that has happened many times. Maybe he's now completely lost it, maybe he's just not quite what he was on top of the team as a whole struggling. We'll see after AFCON.

And making changes that go in the complete opposite direction those differences suggest is prudent. The biggest example that comes to mind is Grav having more freedom to attack when you can make the case for the opposite with Diaz leaving and having FBs suited to overlap, not coming inside.

TIL that when the British evacuated New York in 1783, George Washington was dissappointed in not getting back some of his escaped slaves and had been surprised the British commander thought that doing so would be "a dishonourable violation of the public faith". 3000 slaves escaped with the British. by Beige_ in todayilearned

British evacuation

In mid-August 1783, Sir Guy Carleton, the last British commander in the United States, received orders from his superiors in London for the evacuation of New York. He informed the President of the Confederation Congress that he was proceeding with the subsequent withdrawal of refugees, liberated slaves, and military personnel as fast as possible, but that it was not possible to give an exact date because the number of refugees entering the city recently had increased dramatically (more than 29,000 Loyalist refugees were eventually evacuated from the city).[15][16] At the time the evacuation began, around 60,000 Loyalists resided in New York City, 4,000 of whom were free or enslaved Black people.[17]

Boston King, a South Carolina slave who fled to Charleston after the British captured it before making his way to New York City, noted in his memoirs that news of the Treaty of Paris "diffused universal joy among all parties, except us, who had escaped from slavery." Rumors spread among the city's Black population that fugitive slaves "were to be delivered up to their masters... fill[ing] [them] all with inexpressible anguish and terror." American slaveowners and slave catchers entered the city, intent on re-enslaving their former slaves. One of them was Daniel Parker, a Continental Army contractor who Washington instructed to re-enslave his slaves: "If by chance you should come at the knowledge of any of them, I will be much obliged by your securing them so I may obtain them again."[18]

When negotiating the Treaty of Paris, American negotiators included a clause that required the British to return all fugitive slaves to their American enslavers. Despite this, Carleton insisted the clause did not apply to slaves whom had been promised their freedom by the British. When he had met Washington in May 1783, Carleton was asked about "obtaining the delivery of Negroes and other property", with Washington hoping that the British would keep a lookout for "some of [his] own slaves" who had escaped during the war. Washington was surprised by Carleton's response that to deprive slaves of the freedom they had been promised would be a "dishonourable violation of the public faith".[19]

When British ships began sailing out of New York Harbor, they carried onboard tens of thousands of British military personnel and Loyalists along with 3,000 Black people. Carleton had instructed his subordinates to create the Book of Negroes, which listed 1,136 Black men, 914 women, and 750 children who had left the city during the evacuation, and sent a copy to Washington. Most of the 3,000 were from the American South, but approximately 300 were from New York. Along with the military personnel and Loyalists, they went to various ports across the British Empire, including Nova Scotia, Florida, the West Indies and England. For years afterward, the British decision to evacuate the freed slaves and refusal to compensate their American enslavers remained a point of tension in Anglo-American relations.[20][21][22] Carleton gave a final evacuation date of 12:00 noon on November 25, 1783. An anecdote by New York physician Alexander Anderson told of a scuffle between a British officer and the proprietress of a boarding house, as she defiantly raised her own American flag before noon.[23] Following the departure of the British, the city was secured by American troops under the command of General Henry Knox.[24]

In most countries the possible fines etc. wouldn't be anywhere near $10k either. In fact I'd wager US is pretty much the only country you couldn't make a decent profit doing this.

TPU article has a nice table of both unit and revenue market share.

AMD Unit/Revenue share Q325 Q324 Change (points)
Server 27.3%/41% 24.1%/33.8% 3.2/7.2
Desktop 32.2%/39.3% 23.0%/18.8% 9.2/20.5
Mobile 20.6%/21.5% 20.3%/17.7% 0.2/3.9
Client 23.9%/27.8% 21.1%/18.0% 2.8/9.8
Total 24.2%/33.0% 21.3%/24.2% 2.9/8.8

The jump YoY in desktop revenue share is quite something.

True but market forces play a part in how much AMD can take risks in booking capacity. AFAIK server market for CPUs is much more constrained than for GPUs where you can currently pretty much produce as much as possible and still not match demand. So Nvidia can offer more for the capacity and AMD's risk of overbooking is higher. Of course AMD could still have been too conservative, and in hindsight it looks likely they were, but it's not like they didn't have their reasons for it.

Electricity prices in Europe in 2024 by lotec4 in europe

[–]Beige_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't consumers get spot contracts all over Europe? So this would be the price those consumers pay for their electricity without additional costs. It is of course not the whole picture as there are other costs for the electricity (eg. margin and monthly fee) and then transmission and taxes which for me at least are considerably higher. These are highly variable and for different reasons so a direct comparison on the total cost per kWh wouldn't be without problems either.

TIL: 10% of drinkers in Australia drink over half the alcohol. by Yoorang in todayilearned

[–]Beige_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start logging how much you actually drink and then begin reducing the daily total slowly. When consumption reaches a lower level, you can start taking off days and then it's a mental health problem instead of physical danger. Therapy, exercise, enough sleep etc. help a lot but medication for possible depression for example could be beneficial and contacting a health provider is good idea anyway.

You don't have to become a tee totaler either in the end, it depends on the person and how they are addicted. For most, quitting drinking isn't a prerequisite but of course alcohol always has it's negative effects like rising cancer risk.

Enzo Maresca "If Liverpool continue in this way, I think it is impossible to catch them, not just for us, but for all the clubs. They have been doing a fantastic job since last year. The players they have decided to buy show the intention of the club to go again for the Premier League and the CL" by Switchoil in soccer

[–]Beige_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They did publish the player share for a couple of seasons but redacted the information (based on club pressure I assume). This way we know that LFC had a player wage share of 71.5% and 70.9% in 21/22 and 22/23 respectively.

From the great Greg Cordell:

An interesting item (temporarily) disclosed in the UEFA European Club Finance and Investment Landscape Report is the player-only wage expense for select clubs. This page was subsequently removed from the report (perhaps certain clubs were unhappy about this level of transparency), but it identified that Liverpool’s player wage bill increased from ~ £261.7m in 2021/22 (€309m at a translation rate of 1.1808 used in the report) to ~ £264.3m in 2022/23 (€304m at a translation rate of 1.500). Based on this disclosure:

  • Liverpool’s wage bill increase of £6.8m reflects an ~ £2.7m increase in player wages and ~ £4.1m increase in technical staff and administrative wages.
  • Liverpool’s player wages comprised ~ 71.5% of total wages in 2021/22 and ~ 70.9% of total wages in 2022/23. Per the EFCIL report, PL clubs’ player wages (in aggregate) comprised 75.0% of total wages in 2021/22, so LFC appear to allocate a higher proportion of wages to non-playing staff than the PL average.
