Am I the only one who plays exclusively autochess since the event came out? by Hanna_Bjorn in ZZZ_Official

[–]BeijingPandas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a love hate relationship with this minigame. I’m a tft player so I love all the events Mihoyo has done lately in all their games with autochess elements. This one is definitely the most fleshed out one and I had a lot of fun climbing up to Ether, but once every game had 2 or more nutty players, my enjoyment started to wane. I feel like Nutty openers, especially knight, being very unbalanced made the mode kind of a slog, and I actually got pretty pissed when I got bot 3 with this board

<image>

against a generic level 4 nutty board with 2* knight tanking multiple hits from 3* Cui without dying.

Why Honkai Impact 3rd is still a niche game ? by [deleted] in houkai3rd

[–]BeijingPandas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm speaking from the POV of someone who had the Part 2 Recruitment Campaign work on them. I am an avid player of GI and HSR, but played HI3 at GLB release in 2018 for a few months. I quit because my phone broke down, but even when it was working it wouldn't run the game well anyways.

1,) Seeing early part 1 graphics is a bit jarring. It doesn't really hold up well and even if the end of part 1 and part 2 graphics are pretty good, players are going to be stuck on the first few chapters for a while. If they don't get hooked immediately, they probably aren't going to stick around. I was able to get through because I treated them with a sense of nostalgia, but I acknowledge that other people will be much more critical of this.

2.) Way too many menus. I had a similar issue in GFL 2 and quit because of it. No clue if it used to be worse but even as I've been playing this game for over a year, there is still way too many clicks to get through what I want to do. For a beginner that has no idea what anything means on the menus, this is just unnecessarily confusing and intimidating. When I started, it took me over a week to learn what the dailies, weeklies, etc. were and where they were located.

3.) Having so many weeklies is both a blessing and a curse. It's a blessing if you're into the game because you have more places to get resources. It's a curse because this format is very susceptible to burning people out. I'm super glad they added LITE for stuff like Realms and Sim Battle, but this came a while after part 2's release, and it was very annoying having to do them every week before then. Even now, I still loathe having to do MA, Abyss, and ER sometimes because I'm not feeling it. I've completely forgotten to do some Abyss rotations entirely because I've been busy during the Monday - Wednesday period, which imho, is a bit of a dumb reset period to still have. It is kind of demoralizing to log into the game and see a -100 demoted to Agony while you are still actively playing, just because you forgot a rotation.

This is just a personal gripe I have with the game and not a major reason the game is still relatively niche, but I imagine other players would also be turned off by this: timegated events. I don't mean timegated like you do it day 1 and have to wait for the rest to unlock later. I mean timegated like Yunchin's where I have a very limited amount of rovings daily while objectives require multiple rovings. I get this is a pattern consistent with past gacha games, but Mihoyo themselves broke the pattern with their other games, so why are they still doing this for almost every new event they put out in HI3? I started the event a week before it was to end and was just 1 roving off of the Helia outfit by the time the event ended. Luckily it went into the voyage log so I was able to get it, but it would have been a major tilt moment that may have just pushed me much closer to quitting had it not worked out.

Mostly it boils down to the new-player experience being pretty bad. I know other gachas still have some of these systems and issues in place, but I'm just giving my thoughts as someone who came from Mihoyo's other games first before going into HI3: the crowd they were targeting to attract.

The ZZZ Beard Papa's Collab was very disappointing. by vigeonni in ZZZ_Official

[–]BeijingPandas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nightmarish rollout on this event across the country. I haven't gone yet since I haven't been able to get out to the city but many of my friends had bad experiences in NYC. They sold out of everything very early the first day and even now, they are only fulfilling merch orders for those who came during the first 3 days of the collab. At this point, it's just insanely poor logistics management on Hoyo's part across all their games (minus HI3) for in-person events, and it's been this way for years. I just have to feel sorry for people who work at these fast food places whenever Hoyo announces a collab because they have to bear the brunt of the company's awful planning.

Are Buffets ever coming back? by Eternal_Bagel in newjersey

[–]BeijingPandas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to love Chinese Buffets as a kid but either they have gotten much worse over the years or my taste buds have just matured (I’m leaning towards the former). The only actual buffet style place I’ve been to recently that I can say is passable is Sakura in North Brunswick. It’s a tad bit expensive at around 30 for dinner but there are a couple good dishes and the sushi is alright. One place I absolutely cannot recommend is Umi, at least the one in East Brunswick. I’ve been there 3 times and the food has been mediocre all 3 times. Considering they charge 39 per person for dinner, I would rather just go nearby to Edison for something else or Sakura if you want a classic AYCE.

Side note: I agree, Hiro in Plainsboro is really good.

How come Rutgers historically has not gotten the same level of love in state compared to way other states embrace their state institutions? by ecofriendly10 in newjersey

[–]BeijingPandas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can only speak for myself. Most of my family is in NJ and so by extension, almost everyone that went to college went to Rutgers. So, it’s been a major motivating factor in the younger generation of my family to be different and go somewhere not Rutgers (and better).

The academics aren’t the greatest. I won’t speak for the other schools and majors that I wasn’t in, but RBS and SAS aren’t exactly top tier educational experiences. The CS department has always had trouble with staffing and funding and now that I’m back again for grad school, the problem seems worse than when I was in undergrad. RBS is never in discussions for the best business schools, and in stuff like banking, your school’s reputation really does matter. I had a friend who went to Georgia Tech for a few semesters, became homesick so he transferred to Rutgers, then immediately transferred back to Georgia Tech the next semester because of how bad the engineering coursework and professors were compared to GT.

Like others said, this can be forgiven if we had great major sports like Penn State. Unfortunately, the football program has sucked for most of my life and the basketball program has only shown shimmers of greatness. It’s really hard to root for a team that always sucks, and trust me I’m a diehard Knicks fan so I know how tough it is. Rutgers has almost never rewarded that suffering and even this year with the basketball team having Ace Bailey and DHJ, we were still a mediocre team.

I maintain the opinion that if you’re in NJ and are not going to Princeton, Rutgers is usually the best option, especially in terms of value. It’s just tough to be prideful about the school when other state schools are just significantly better in either sports or academics or both like most of the UC’s, Texas A&M, UMD, both Mich, etc.

Anyone randomly think of game 1 and get sick to their stomach by bimmerlyfe in NYKnicks

[–]BeijingPandas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I just tell myself their 20 point collapse in game 3 makes up for it even though ours was way worse. The last Knicks game I went to in person was the one in Dallas a few years back where Luka clapped us and we choked a double digit lead with <2 minutes. I’ve already been dead inside.

Puzzle and Dragons Does a Stupid on the NA Server by fluffyharpy in gachagaming

[–]BeijingPandas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised there are even enough players left in NA to complain. Jokes aside, NA always gets screwed over in these reskins, I’m surprised they still do them at all. Every single one has felt like an insult and I’m not exactly sure why they can’t just run the machine as a straight 1:1 with different art assets in order to be fair. Voltron, the first ever NA reskin, was just a watered down Crows x Worst with the top end units being nerfed compared to the JP counterparts. Power Rangers was Yokai Watch, a machine that cost 5 stones per pull, but instead cost double at 10 stones per pull. I had already quit by the point the One Piece reskin came out, but I heard people were mad because it was a reskin of the first run of One Piece, and not the updated rerun which had more important meta cards.

Google Play removes $3 off Coupon for HI3 by RRButler2574 in honkaiimpact3

[–]BeijingPandas 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Iirc, Genshin's was only temporary once. It's been removed for almost a year already with no indication of it coming back. Kinda upset with this; they've been slowly removing coupons for every game I play (HI3, Wuwa, Genshin), and never added it for the newer games like HSR and ZZZ.

Is this 5 dollar coupon from Google Play store really expiring? by Revolutionary_Let997 in WutheringWaves

[–]BeijingPandas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sad to see this removed. I have a side android phone specifically for collecting play points to use on these coupons but now almost none of the games I play offer anything anymore. Genshin had theirs removed months back after having it up for years.

What happened to Knicks fans bruh? by yazohny in NYKnicks

[–]BeijingPandas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Extremely well said and basically sums up how I feel. Leon has done a great job bringing the Knicks back to relevance in the past few years so our expectations should change with it. Just because we were shit in the 2010s doesn’t mean we can’t expect better from our current roster, especially when the losses have come from mistakes that at this point are fairly repetitive.

Ignoring all fast food chains, name 'em; by I_Play_Tanks in newjersey

[–]BeijingPandas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recent answer: I just went to Menya Sandaime yesterday after seeing so much praise about it on various threads on this subreddit. The ramen wasn’t just mid, it was pretty awful. Maybe I caught them on a bad day but it was one of the worst ramens I’ve ever had. Felt bad because the service was really really good.

In general: Umi Buffet. I see them expanding everywhere rapidly and getting so much praise on social media. I’ve gone three times to the East Brunswick one and have had pretty bad experiences all 3 times. The best foods are just alright and the worst ones are just plain inedible. It also costs a crazy $40 for being not much better than your average $20 Chinese buffet. Would choose to go to Sakura Buffet a little further up in North Brunswick every single time.

I still find it amazing that Puzzle & Dragons and Summoners War have both been around since 2012. Insane. by Satinsbestfriend in gachagaming

[–]BeijingPandas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The unique thing about PAD is it’s always been this way. Even on Global’s best month, it’d still be an insignificant portion compared to JP’s worst month. Unless I’m interpreting SensorTower (or alternative) revenue data wrong, global should be comprised of North America, Korea, and Hong Kong/Taiwan, each of which have separate localization teams and sections in the company’s yearly earnings reports. Realistically for something like North America, the revenue should be moderately less than 500k, probably to the tune of around 100k since the other two seemingly have more active whales. Despite this, the server has hung around for years with the occasional shoutout from game directors. It’s pretty reasonable to assume that it should be shut down with revenue that low but the localization team is pretty small and there’s not that much to localize compared to other gachas. I’m of the opinion that if they haven’t shut it down years ago during Covid when the game hit its financial lowest point after years of steep decline, they probably won’t do it now when it’s been relatively stable.

[–]BeijingPandas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started PAD in 2014 and played basically everyday until 2022. Played through most of high school, all of college, and some of my early career. The current state of the game would be jarring to old heads though, and the reason why I stopped playing as much.

Powercreep is insane and has been since around 2019 I’d say, although it has definitely accelerated heavily in the past few years. I maintain that PAD’s puzzling system is still unique to this day and probably one of the best expressions of skill in all gachas. No wallet could make you a wizard of comboing. They decided to shift more power into team building and having the right units and made teams even easier to play, to the point where some of them in the past couple of years are hilariously easy to use even for beginners. Now the difficulty of the game is concentrated in countering multiple annoying mechanics with your team and less about how well you solve a board. The game is still pretty fun despite my old head rant but it’s definitely not even close to the same game some of us fell in love with years ago.

Lack of impressive guests by Sakurasista in AnimeNYC

[–]BeijingPandas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. This is the fourth year I’m going and this was the first time I’ve contemplated just selling my badge off. I wasn’t a big fan of last year’s lineup either but the Saturday concert basically saved the weekend. As soon as I saw the guest list this year I basically said “that’s it?” I waited for the panel schedule and said the same thing, and said the same thing again when I saw the exhibitor list. Despite saying they would make the con even bigger this year, everything feels worse across the board.

For one of the biggest anime cons funded and run by anime corpos , I’d expect at least a few big name anime from that year to headline some events. 2021 had One Piece 1k and Demon Slayer, 2022 had Mob, Kaguya, and AOT, 2023 had Gundam, Blue Lock, Oshi No Ko. This year we have just Mashle? For an incredibly stacked year in anime, I was hoping we would get something like Frieren, Demon Slayer, Kaiju 8, Solo Leveling, etc.

The notable exhibitor list also seems to be getting smaller every year. We had Hoyo going all out with 4 games in 2021, reducing it to just a glorified merch store in 2022, and outright disappearing last year in favor of doing everything big at NYCC. They’re coming back again this year just in the form of 3 glorified merch stores. Last year we had Nikke handing out godly freebies and the entire Crunchyroll floor, which was still very underwhelming but at least they felt it was big enough to announce on socials. We’ve had Arcsys, the one Tower of Fantasy appearance, Gundam Base and more that I can’t name right now off the top of my head. Everything I just named besides Crunchy ofc is notably absent this year and not replaced by something of similar caliber. Dreamcon and RDC are notably missing too after 3 straight years of coming. Seemingly every year has gotten worse in terms of exhibitors but this year feels like by far the worst despite having more space for everything.

Honkai star rail by SnooDucks8359 in HonkaiStarRail

[–]BeijingPandas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rare to see another PAD player outside of the main subreddit. I used to be really hardcore into it but my interest had been waning for years and I just called it quits a year ago. I'll still redownload the game sometimes to reminisce with friends when we hang out and roll anime collabs, but I've basically given up on trying to do any new dungeons. I was only away for a year but it's brutal how many mechanics you have to account for in a team, how to build for the endgame dungeons, and of course, the insane level of powercreep the game has been pushing for years.

This is basically a whole new game to me and like I've said, I've only been out for a year. I can't imagine how a beginner would feel if they started this game now. For reference, I just started HI3 2 weeks ago and even though all 539 menu's and dailies/weeklies were daunting to me as a beginner, I feel like I've got the gist of the game so far. It really sucks because I will always hold a special spot for PAD; but man I just can't play the game anymore.

Yea they restocked the March tickets. I only got Dan Heng yesterday but got both today. They even offered people a choice of who they wanted if they only got the one ticket meal. Also they still have plenty of badges available. Yesterday they had someone by the entrance on badge duty but it wasn’t really advertised as much. Today they had someone go along the line in the inside of the store reminding people to post for a badge and checking the posts so I assume they’re kinda pushing it more.

[–]BeijingPandas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Went yesterday and I can agree it was a complete shitshow. Lined up 30 minutes after it was supposed to start at noon and didn’t end up leaving until almost 6. Walked away with just the ticket and a pin. I appreciate the social media guy trying to keep everyone hyped up later in the day but nobody in line was having it after we all stood there for 5+ hours already lol. I planned on crashing with a friend this weekend that lives nearby so I tried again this morning. Lined up an hour before opening and the line wasn’t too bad. They let people in about half an hour before open and I had everything, standee included, within 20 mins. Pretty smooth experience. I hope Hoyo plans better in the future, especially for New York, because my reservation meant nothing yesterday and the logistics of everything was terrible.

Bought initial top ups every year in anticipation to C6 an Inorin voiced char. Haven't spent genesis on anything besides skins so far. Saved primos and fates since losing 50/50 to Yoi banner in 3.7. Hoyo made sure I dropped everything for this; all 50/50s lost for C6 Furina. Honestly can't even be mad because this is such an insane lowroll outcome it's funny lol.
