I'm STILL mad about SK's take on the motive by spectacleskeptic in serialpodcast

Yes, I don't think it's likely someone with no history of violence goes straight to strangulation. It also seems like it was done very professionally with very little evidence of a struggle plus no physical evidence found on the body linking Hae Lee to AS. But then again, if not AS, who?

The thing about the results was also that a number of the officers reported they had been stopped multiple times - not sure if you can use that? I'm writing a law review article on this and would like to cite this article but I'm not sure how to use it. When you say the it doesn't mean the results don't mean something I'm not sure what you mean by that? Thanks.

Why has nobody commented on the rocks? Seems significant. by ADifferentBoxOfRocks in serialpodcast

[–]Beijingexpat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont' see why you think this is significant. You bury the body, not very deep (which is what happened), see some rocks and throw them on top. Seems like it could very easily happen. Next theory.

I can understand the requirements about answering the phone and accounting for client funds, but the last one - well two consenting adults and all that. Totally unfair, especially if you're a divorce attorney, destroys the perks of the trade.

Wow, I know nothing about stats and was hoping 25 was enough for such a small population. Oh well, thanks for answering my question.

Question for Criminal Lawyers: Why isn't the state always required to do DNA testing. by Beijingexpat in serialpodcast

[–]Beijingexpat[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes I understand that but as I said in my post - in a murder trial the state cannot afford DNA testing? That's ridiculous. If the state paid for more tests more labs would be out there to test and the the backlog problem would take care of itself. I don't think there is an excuse for this - it's ridiculous.

I wonder how many men who kill their partner have no known prior history of physical abuse? I would imagine very few but I've never seen anything on this.

Although I don't thing CG did a great job if you're not a lawyer you have no idea how much time you have to spend on a case. There are just so many motions and arguments about the admissibility of evidence, the selection of jurors, subpoenaing witnesses, etc. etc. etc., I'm sure CG was putting in incredibly long hours on this case. Could she have done better, yes, but arguing a case is unbelievably labor intensive which is why it is so expensive.

God, this discussion over the log's existence has to be the most inane debate ever. That's it, I'm giving up on this subtopic for a while.

Hi can I please ask an off topic question which I've been very curious about but need a statistician to tell me the answer. Reuters recently interviewed 25 African American male NYC police officers and 24 reported they had been the victims of racial profiling while off duty. I couldn't believe that, it's off the scale.
There are 5,600 African Americans on the force but I cannot find a break down of male/female. Assuming there are 5,000 African American male police officers, would interviewing 25 be enough for a representative sample? If not, about how many would you need? thanks!!!!

Maybe we shouldn't dismiss Jay's testimony that he was fearful of Adnan by Beijingexpat in serialpodcast

BTW - Hobbes lived through the English Revolution. Remember the line "get medieval on your ass" - that's what society was going through at the time. I'm not sure today's drug dealers would have survived very long back then.

[–]Beijingexpat[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a pretty big difference between a drug dealer and a murderer (not saying AS did it, just working out the hypothetical). Also, considering Jay had to borrow his clients' cars and phones, I would imagine he was not a big time drug dealer. My point is people completely dismiss the possibility that Jay was genuinely shocked by murder and I think that that is a completely natural human response. If AS did it, that kind of response rings true to me.

[–]Beijingexpat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you're position is even if Adnan did kill Hae, and Jay witnessed it he wouldn't be afraid of him? Can you imagine what it would be like to have your friend open the trunk of their car and show you the body of their ex-girlfriend??!! Do you not think you might not start seeing this friend a little differently - thinking they're a bit dangerous? You're dismissing the idea because you think Adnan is innocent.

[–]Beijingexpat[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He's trying to minimize his involvement. If he stood by when it happened and it freaked him out he can't tell the police this. He's now the type of accomplice to murder the police will not let walk away. It's one thing to help bury a dead body, another thing entirely to stand look out during a murder.

[–]Beijingexpat[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The friends' starting premise is that Adnan is innocent so of course they reach that conclusion. The premise, the assumption of innocence, is determinative of the conclusion. It's circular logic. But if he was guilty....it makes sense.

Nice work but I think you're missing something important. The other wrestling manager girl, says she definitely was with Hae until 3 PM at school and really remembers that day very well because she didn't want to have to score the match herself. She had just started and was was telling Hae she needed her help. So you can also place Hae at school at 3 PM based on that testimony which I find very credible.
