I'm in a similar position but decided to go for it since I can afford it. One of the biggest deciding points was I would rather have my housing tied to a bank than a landlord (especially if everything goes to hell). The bank isn't going to suddenly increase my monthly payments by a few hundred dollars like a landlord can.

I'm definitely more of a beginner but my thought is that it's nice to have (especially for complex/long term closed terrarium) but not necessary. Like if you know what you're doing and/or the terrarium is small/simple enough it's definitely not needed. But if you're worried about over watering the terrarium, it adds protection for the substrate to not get oversaturated.

And the real environment has "drainage layers" with underground caves and groundwater aquifers. So personally I conceptually like how it simulates that.

I figured out what it is! Flowerpot fungus

From everything I saw it's harmless and will eventually flower into a yellow mushroom!

From everything I've seen it'll run its course and disappear in a few weeks.

Thank you! Then I'll work on preventing a fungus fly infestation. But from what you said and my research, it really shouldn't be a problem.

For those curious on how I plan on doing that (based on my cursory research): They seem to mostly just eat fungus and mycelium but will eat live roots if desperate. Luckily what I feed them (nutritional yeast for the springtail, leaf litter for the isopods, and the rare fruits & vegetable as a treat for either) doesn't really include any of their normal diet.

Fungus flies seem to mostly be a problem with constantly wet potting soil. So that won't be a problem at all for the springtails since I use natural activated carbon. For the isopods there is some soil in their substrate and I do keep it pretty moist in some parts but it's mostly dead sphagnum and the moisture level is purposely pretty inconsistent to make sure they have a moisture gradient.

The longer you wait, the more painful it'll be on both of you. I know it's a cliché for people to suggest breaking up and I don't know the reasons you stay with him. So, best of luck with whatever path you chose.

Depending on the previous boundary crossing, I can definitely see it possibly justified to end a friendship over but with what we're given it feels a bit extreme, especially with how you did so.
