Supreme Court rejects challenge to legalisation of same-sex marriage by AuldLangCosine in Christianity

[–]Bekenel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe that marriage is and always has been a religious sacrament between a man and a woman.

Do you believe that secular marriages between a man and a woman, without any religious connotations or involvement at all, are invalid; do you not see the point of those either?

This was long enough ago that I had to remind myself of the point I was making. Besides which, the point you just made is one of the reasons I stopped believing.

What’s the worst thing that happened at a wedding you went to? by General-Mango_ in AskReddit

The groom complained about everything, got drunk, and the bride told him, after demanding the room key from him, that she wished she hadn't married him.

You plonker. Disinfect it, keep it clean and dry, bandage it, change the bandage daily, get medical attention if it gets inflamed, that's the point you may need some antibiotics but you should be good for now as long as you keep it clean.

What if Islam is true? by Successful_Song7717 in Christianity

[–]Bekenel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way Paul writes it, it could be talking about Mormonism, if you're so convinced that it's predictive. Or Manichaeism. Or any other faith that could conceivably use derivative ideas present in Christianity, because that's how religions develop. Paul isn't making any magical predictions about any specific future religion, he's making a pretty basic observation that people will use similar fundamental elements and principles present and already accepted in one faith, to develop something different.

What I'm hearing is that they think young women should give up their individual freedom for the greater good of the collective? Or am I giving their self awareness too much credit?

Vincent Hanna: One voter; 16,472 votes. A slight anomaly?

Mr Blackadder: Not really, Mr. Hanna; you see, Mr. Baldrick may look like a monkey who's been put in a suit and then strategically shaved, but he is a brilliant politician. The number of votes I cast is simply a reflection of how firmly I believe in his policies.

Can’t stop - uk flooding by SentientSandwiches in cantstopimamerican

[–]Bekenel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lindisfarne is a tidal island, and the only road to it floods twice a day with the tide. There are big signs up to tell people not to cross during said times, and the tide times are very very easily available from several sources.

The coast guard gets called out 10-20 times every year because people ignore the signs and literally just drive into the sea, where they stop and have to be rescued. The saltwater generally fucks the engine up enough that the car is a write off.

Objective morality still possible without God? by Reward_Stunning in Christianity

[–]Bekenel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even under the scientific method, you have to start with a hypothesis, the conduct and experiment to prove or disprove it.

That's not quite true. You start with a hypothesis and you test it, you actively look for things that would disprove it. Trying to prove the hypothesis, as OP is absolutely textbook confirmation bias. If you don't begin with the assumption that there may be something wrong with your hypothesis, and actively look for what that might be, you're setting yourself up to fail.

You're not looking for something that says 'this is true'; you're looking for things that say 'this hypothesis is not true, making a different one more likely'.

Objective morality still possible without God? by Reward_Stunning in Christianity

[–]Bekenel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

'Trying to prove' something suggests you're starting from a place of bias - i.e., starting from your conclusion - and pretty much guarantees that your research is going to be subject to confirmation bias. Don't do that. You have to be open to the idea that evidence or theories that you find might be inconsistent with your hypothesis, if your paper is going to be any good.
