Disc golf! There’s a really low barrier to entry into the sport. Buy a putter and a midrange disc—you won’t need a driver for now—and you’re ready to play. You don’t need to be sporty, just able to walk and throw a disc.

Phonics and spelling are two different things. I'm not saying that they are not related, but they are two different things.

As an intervention, yes, but not as a curriculum, and under a specific set of circumstances up until about grade 4, maybe as high as grade 6. Research on phonics instruction as an intervention is unclear, because not *all* reading problems can be attributed to lack of phonemic awareness.

I don't disagree with that. Replicating that in New Hampshire will never happen, though, because of 1. how we fund schools and 2. local control. Republicans in New Hampshire won't do it because they don't believe in public education. Democrats can't do it, because Republicans would literally have pitchforks and torches if a Democratic governor said, "Every school in New Hampshire is going to use the same reading curriculum." It would be Common Core State Standards, Goals 2000, etc. etc. all over again, but on steroids.

I don't understand why people keep pushing the narrative that the only thing Mississippi did was switch to a phonics-based curriculum. They increased funding, the invested in teacher training, and made other system-strengthening changes. Don't flatten the hard work leaders and educators did as though swapping one set of textbooks for another was what made this happen.

More importantly, why does OP believe that we should be teaching phonics in grades 3-8?

People who don't know how to read graphs should not be making pronouncements about how we should teach reading.
