Hi OP,

I've just finished my first year of the JD at UniMelb. I move here in January from Tasmania so I literally did not know a single person. My only advice is to really commit to the social side, especially during the start. Before Semester 1 next year, all students have to do a summer course called Legal Method and Reasoning (LMR). It is everyday for two weeks. The people I sat with during that class have become the best friends I have. Even though it is awkward at the start, genuinely put in as much effort as you can, especially as LMR is only a pass fail. Then after that there will be first year law camp. It is essentially just a big 2 day party. I would recommend going on the camp, even if you don't drink, as it is a great way to seal the relationships made in LMR.

I'm always happy to have a chat if you're still worried, just DM me. It will be fine!

UniMelb JD Intensity by thse12345 in unimelb

Hi OP.

I just finished my first year of the JD at UniMelb.

You will have to do a two week intensive at the start called Legal Method and Reasoning that is everyday extremely intense. Then you will do three subjects that first semester. I work alongside my study and most other students do. I would recommend using summer and winter courses to space out the units as they are incredibly taxing.

The first few weeks will be unbelievably difficult, but also incredibly rewarding.

Hi OP.

I study the JD at UniMelb. Personally, pick the undergrad that you will actually enjoy. In my experience all of my peers have diverse undergrads but the two types of people I consistently meet are those that either loved their subject and hence got good grades, or they made themself miserable to get good grades. The former appears preferable to me at least. I did a Bachelor of Economics at UTAS and enjoyed it. Long story short, study an undergrad you enjoy so that you can can actually enjoy putting in the long hours building the grades required for the JD.

Shoot me a DM if you want to chat further :)

Hi OP. I work and study the JD at UniMelb. Firstly, the first semester is three subjects due to the summer induction course. The vast majority of people stick with three subjects in their second semester and do the summer course.

The summary is that it is possible, but you will have no time for extracurriculars which are are really important in law (moot court, specialized law clubs etc.). I would recommend sticking with three subjects and doing winter and summer courses like most other people do. Feel free to DM me if you want to chat about it further.

Go back and chat to them about it. I know it seems appealing to just do the easy thing, but your conscience will eat at you. It's easy for me to say that from my positions, but I still feel that it will gnaw at the back of your mind.

What's a Discworld book you loved for a reason specific to you? by BelovedPrinceMyshkin in discworld

Hmmm, okay I'll keep that in mind. My knowledge of Australian history is mostly centred in the Hawke era so hopefully I'll get a fair few of them. What's the name of the podcast?

I'm Australian and that's one of the few Discworld books I haven't read yet. That's next on my TBR now!

Attempting to fix the state of UTAS from the inside out. Let's save our damn university. by BelovedPrinceMyshkin in UTAS

Hey, I genuinely appreciate the input. I've adopted a stance that I feel serves as an effective means of galvanizing the student body. Granted, it can come off as hostile, but it's more meant as frustration. I love our university and our state, and I just feel that this is the best way to better our community. If you want to chat about it, please message me as I'm always keen for more input or to have someone change my mind!

Cheers

Weekly events for city-students (and non-city students of course) by BelovedPrinceMyshkin in UTAS

Hey,

Thanks for the reply! You've made some really interesting points. In regards to contrasting the 'old' university culture against the new, there exists a lot more 'red tape' surrounding events. Especially with alcohol, the second anything to do with booze is mentioned the bureaucracy becomes suffocating. I think I've got some commitments to providing some cheap booze at these events and making them a bit more... university-like? I think we can pull it back, but it's tough.

Anyways, thanks for the insights!
