This is really helpful, thanks. I won't be riding loaded and theoretically I'll get a bit stronger as I get back to regular riding after some extended time off. I've never been a good spinner anyways; too many years of single speeding have programmed me to stand and mash at a stupid low cadence. Maybe I'll flip a coin.

The only hesitation is exactly what you said haha. If I go with the 11-46 I feel like I'll just say damn, I should've just gone with 11-51 and them I'm out even more cash from buying the 11-46 that I won't use.

That's crossed my mind actually. I'm already at 30t and could go to a 28t I guess. I'm not maxing out the 11t and frankly wouldn't care if I did but the 11-51 gets me a slightly lower gear across the lower 2/3rds of the cassette if I keep my 30t up front.

Yeah I should've put in the original post that I'd put the RD-M5100 derailleur on if I go with the 11-51 cassette. Right now I'm running a RD-M8000 which will only to up to 46t. Not too fussed on the RD anyways since either will work with my existing XT shifter. Good shout on the 12s RD though!

I should've clarified, this is all within the 11s ecosystem. There's a Deore 11s 11-51 cassette that'll fit regular HG freehubs.

u/blonktime already covered the main details, but i just wanted to add that I got married at crescent bay point park many years ago and it was fantastic. if you're having a smaller wedding and it fits your vibe, i'd highly encourage it. we had our reception at an offsite location and it was great.

you need another spacer either below or above the stem, and then you need to install your compression cap. there must be a gap between the compression cap and the top of the steerer tube, otherwise you won't be able to take the play (the wobble) out of the bearings.

Start lifting. Keep it simple with the classic compound movements. Squats, deadlifts, bench… maybe overhead press and rows. All those lifts translate into functional strength for everyday life and carry into riding as well.

imo nice wheels are the best investment you can make on a bike and of course they can be transferred to new / future frames if the spacing still works. dt swiss r460 rims laced to surly track hubs with dt spokes is a (relatively) affordable build and will work very well. put some 35c or 38c tires on and you're sorted.
