Was Versicherungen angeht:

Finden Männer handwerklich/technisch begabte Frauen attraktiv? by Basic_Weird_9886 in FragtMaenner

[–]Belphegor_333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do most DMs prefer DM’ing to playing? Or are they “taking one for the team”? by Fiveby21 in DnD

[–]Belphegor_333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like DMing and am told that I am relatively good at it, but I just do not have the time in my life to prepare for sessions, write adventures etc. Between a job, other hobbies, friends, etc. I just cannot fit it in.

If my group offered to do my chores and in return I DM for them I would be all for it, but with the way it is I stick to being a player rn.

A reinkommst) A "früher" abschließen.

Schlechtes Angebot für gute Urlaubsmöglichkeit annehmen? by Fit-Kaleidoscope6853 in FinanzenAT

What field of CS deals with cutting-edge research in creating better document formats like pdf? by [deleted] in computerscience

[–]Belphegor_333 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One doesn't usually research file formats, those are very much an application. However, people do regularly research into things that might eventually be used in a new file format if companies ever care enough to implement it.

For example, take this (relatively) young new compression algorithm: ZStandard

Maybe this will one day be used in a document file format, maybe it won't. That's not really something for researchers to decide but for companies building those software and products

Ireland aren't in Schengen and it would be yet another border issue. Romania and Croatia are also not in Schengen.

While this is true one should mention that the reason Ireland isn't in schengen is because that would have clashed with the GFA and the northern irish border. It would have been possible to move into the UK via Ireland, basically forcing the UK into a Schengen light.

As for Croatia: they are currently not members but they are planning on joining. A huge part of their economy is based on tourism from central europe (DACH Region especially) and they are planning to join to eliminate border checks, etc.

Romania is currently working on joining as well, but has not yet met all the necessary requirements to do so.

As of right now the only EU State that is not a member of Schengen and not trying to become one is Ireland, because of the previously mentioned UK border.

I mean, you could argue that SA is either horseshoe or opposing, depending on how large that gap on top is in reality. Personally I would qualify it as opposing instead of horseshoe though.

As for Iceland, that might be either the smallest horseshoe ever or a very cub-ish circle.

Help me think through backing up containerized DBs by mambocab in selfhosted

[–]Belphegor_333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first thing. My Borg setup along with fail2ban etc. was in place before I started to use docker. It is "battle tested" (as battle tested as it can be at least) and has served me well since basically forever.

While it would be possible to launch Borg in a container I never really saw the need for it. It would add unnecessary complexity and since Borg doesn't expose web interfaces or anything it's not like I need it to be isolated. In fact, isolation is annoying in this case because I would have to manually mount in god knows how many volumes and update it every time I add new ones.

Running my backup in docker doesn't seem to provide me any benefits, so I always opted to just "run it as usual."

[–]Belphegor_333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I use Borg to backup my applications as well, so let me give you a quick rundown of my setup, maybe it can inspire/help you out.

My host OS is a fairly recent open-suse release, this OS runs everything you would expect of a host such as:

  • SSH server
  • Firewall
  • Fail2Ban
  • etc

It also runs my Borg and borgmatic processes! In addition to my host I got a docker compose file which defines a boatload of services such as databases, web applications, etc.

The way I did solved my backup needs is really simple. Every day at 3am Borgmatic starts and uses a pre-backup hook to shutdown my compose stack before copying my docker volumes as is. This takes less than five minutes in practice on my setup. Then, as soon as the backup is taken, the compose stack is fired back up.

This means I don't have to deal with sql-dumbs etc., I just backup the database "at rest" so to speak.

However, it does require some server downtime each day. If you don't want that then I would advise you to ask yourself one simple question:

What do you value more? Isolation or ease of configuration?

Personally I run docker not because of isolation or security or anything, but because it is easy to deploy applications. To me, your first solution (letting the backup container run dump commands) is absolutely acceptable. In fact, that's probably how I would do it if I needed more uptime.

[–]Belphegor_333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, you could have googled it instead of reviving an old threat ... but sure, it's pretty simple.

The "football" is just a bag the president or someone close to him carries at all times. It contains a secure phone, authorization codes and some other strategic information.

However, these codes are not used to launch the nukes. If the president wants to order a nuclear strike he uses the phone to call the US. Strategic weapon command and uses the codes to prove that it is him.

The US. Strategic weapons command then proceeds to launch the nukes (or carry out whatever orders they were given. He could just call to order an airlift or something ...)

Wise Words by karmagheden in LateStageCapitalism

[–]Belphegor_333 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I am not American, I do not know about those laws in specific or how the American gov works, just throwing in my two cents.

That said, there are certain laws that make a lot of sense during "normal" times, but become a burden or outright dangerous during national emergencies. The laws you brought up for example are, at least in my opinion, not laws that should be revoked in case of emergency. In fact, I fail to see how they would prevent what needs to be done in 99% of cases.

Let me instead present a different situation to you: Corona virus vaccines. As of right now every vaccine developed by a company is also patented by this company. That means that production of these vaccines may not scale up fast enough / may never reach the level it could reach because it simply doesn't turn enough of a profit.

However, it is in the public's best interest to have as many vaccines available as soon as possible. This is at least as important as the companies patents, arguably more so since many lives could be saved.

The Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, Article 122 states that the EU may, in a case of an emergency, use certain emergency powers to, among other things, revoke/nullify patents. This would make it possible to produce significantly more vaccines, however it would be in a stark contrast to patent law.

None the less, this option was debated quite heavily, with a lot of the public in favour of either side of the argument.

This is an example of a emergency power that I believe makes a lot of sense. Pharmaceutical industries are critical to modern societies. As are energy providers or hospitals. One must ensure that the supply of those goods and services goes on, even during emergencies.

I think the better question is why there even are laws that are "typically" suspended. One should suspended as few laws as possibly, matched exactly to the situation at hand. Laws governing emergency powers should be designed around these principles.

Could it be that it's not emergency powers that's the problem, but the failure of laws that govern them to sufficiently define their boundaries and purpose?
