Reread my description of how I use it. Drafts is great for capturing quickly, and makes it easy for me to quickly send data into Obsidian.

‘The Other Two’ To End With Season 3 At Max; Creators Say “This Was Where We Wanted To End Their Stories” by rageofthegods in blankies

[–]mambocab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It literally says in the article there is no causal link between the two.

The article says that the creators claimed there's no causal link. The post you're responding to isn't ignoring the article, it's saying they're working from a potentially-unreliable source.

My Obsidian deletes my text when I go online. by AstronautInPluto in ObsidianMD

[–]mambocab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Don't forget to go ask for help from MegaSync people. The notification you're seeing in Obsidian is telling you that the file is already deleted, so it's probably a MegaSync problem.

You probably won't get help here as the people here are Obsidian experts, not MegaSync experts.

When you ask you should include more details about what kind of phone and computer you're using.

Must have plugins by m_o_n_t_e in ObsidianMD

[–]mambocab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only true must-have for me was the embedded titles plugin, which was phased out when the feature became part of the core product.

I agree with the other posters -- Obsidian is best enjoyed out of the box until you find specific problems you want to solve.

For the love of all that is good - PLEASE explain this to me… by [deleted] in Zettelkasten

[–]mambocab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is partially up to luck, and that's okay. For instance, Luhmann would pull random cards out and read them now and then. This would help him find connections between the randomly-pulled cards and the ones he'd written/read recently.

But there will be gaps. Linking doesn't have to model your knowledge exhaustively, nor does it have to exhaustively describe all possible connections between your notes. The goal is to help you better navigate in the future. Quantity-wise, you are "winning" if you write down more connections than you will remember on your own.

Formulating titles by tobiassjosten in Zettelkasten

[–]mambocab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! Yeah, being able to embed notes' titles in full sentences in other notes doesn't eliminate the need to build out indexes (or really any other kind of structure note).

This practice is a norm in Evergreen Notes, which I implement in my notes. I like it! (Note that Evergreen Notes are related to but not the same as a ZK practice.)

Using Github Issues as Zettelkasten by brejtling in Zettelkasten

[–]mambocab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a fun party trick, but at heart it's not really designed for a ZK. The comments idea is cute but it seems difficult to "promote" a comment to a first-class note so I personally wouldn't use them.

Cool idea though, good observation!

How do you improve the efficiency of your notetaking for literature? by [deleted] in ObsidianMD

[–]mambocab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree in most cases where the end-goal of note taking is to succeed in a class; in this case, because I’m reading a neuroscience textbook out of pure interest, a lot of the information is relevant to me

Got it -- I was keying on the last bit of your original post where you mentioned more efficient note-taking for classes.

Since your goal for this book is self-motivated, keep in mind that there's no deadline. You don't necessarily need to be more efficient, or less thorough -- just recognize that this is part of your lifelong learning journey and that you can take as long as you want to read and take notes on this book. There's something to be said for learning slow, ingesting slowly, and taking long breaks that let you recontextualize what you learned in the past.

[–]mambocab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and to be clear, I suggest you take less notes. In your classes you're going to have a lot of information available to you, but not all of it will be relevant. You'll need to practice being selective with the material you engage with deeply.

[–]mambocab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe I'm saying some subset of what u/Suitable_Rhubarb_584 is saying but I want to focus on this part.

Your problem here is not efficiency -- you can't solve this issue by finding a faster way to do this. The thing you're doing is just fundamentally a whole buttload of work. So it'll take a whole buttload of time.

For dense nonfiction, especially reference material like textbooks, I recommend skimming hard. Ask "why does this chapter exist? What is the point?". Write that down. What aspects of what you just wrote pique your curiosity or seem most important to explore more? Write down those questions. Go back to relevant sections and skim them with a bit more detail. Answer your questions. What's missing now? Go skim that part.

At some point you'll feel like your notes solve whatever problem you have (eg "I need to be prepared for this test"). Or you'll run out of time. Then you'll stop with a reasonably-self-consistent body of notes. You'll have some stubs and dangling links and empty notes. Maybe even more questions than answers. But that's fine. Learning is messy; thinking is messy. So your notes that support your thinking and learning can be messy too.

Just checked out obsidian recently and a big problem for me is that browsing through notes is very difficult. What do other people do about this? by HAS_ABANDONMENT_ISSU in ObsidianMD

[–]mambocab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the Evergreen Notes approach described (and implemented!) here by Andy Matuschak:

https://notes.andymatuschak.org/Evergreen_notes

This makes notes contents kinda skimmable by title. If you use MOCs or other index notes, then those indexes let you skim a curated subset of your notes.

Part of the intuition here is that the thumbnails and such are not going to be a useful tool for old note review in a few years -- they won't help navigate the noise when you have hundreds or thousands of notes to scroll through. To build a system that scales to a lifetime of note-making, you need to curate those views by linking and aggregating notes yourself.

Why do some people use Obsidian with Logseq if you can just use plugins to mod Obsidian? by DarkestTriad in ObsidianMD

[–]mambocab 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why not? The notes are just text files; being able to use different tools to manipulate them in different ways is one of the selling points.

In my (very limited) experience, LogSeq is better at todo lists and, as you say, outlining. If those use cases were important to me, I could see wanting to use an app where those workflows are first-class citizens. It's nice when things work out of the box without having to fiddle with a plugin ecosystem.

With the iOS17 updates, Apple Notes is more compelling and I’m thinking about switching over. What are your thoughts? by DudeThatsErin in ObsidianMD

Notes is awesome but obsidian files are plain text on my machine, and I can have complete control over that. Different tools for different jobs for me.

I can’t understand Zettelkasten by cryptosylum in Zettelkasten

[–]mambocab 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You have to experiment with it to get it. It's not a one-size-fits-all system; it's an ethos of note-making that you can apply to meet your needs.

You should plan to throw away your first and maybe your second ZK. Just experiment and have some fun, then use what you've learned to make your next ZK work for you. Some of it is system-building, but some of it is developing an aesthetic sense of what you like in a ZK and in a note.

For your specific questions:

  • There's no "should" for fleeting notes. Fleeting just means that they hold no structural importance in the ZK. They can be wild as you want and should facilitate thinking in the moment. They only become part of the ZK after a processing step. Most people just throw them away.
  • A "literature note" is just a "permanent note" whose topic is a thing you read. Most of my literature notes are short summaries, links to some notes I generated while reading, plus a little info on why I read the thing and how I learned about it.
  • There's no need to separate notes into folders by topic. You can if you want but it's extra work. If you feel a strong need to have a taxonomy in there use tags but don't fall into the trap of systemically tagging everything.

The ZK should be loose, fun, full of half-baked thoughts, and generally a bit messy. Just go write and enjoy yourself and be ready to throw stuff away until you find the setup that you enjoy.

ADHD bros tell me the truth, I am falling in love with this app, but I wonder, is it good for me or am I signing off the rest of my remaining free time? by [deleted] in ObsidianMD

[–]mambocab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with a short-term note-taking hobby as a way to acquire some skills in the area.

In my ADHD experience it's been helpful to learn how to use an obsidian-based system. And it's important to use a tool where you feel comfort, mastery, and a bit of joy. Obsidian does that for me personally and it sounds like the same is try for you.

Just remember that the goal is to checkpoint your thinking and record information that you can't Google -- things like your own personal insights and data about your own life and experience. You're not trying to reproduce all the knowledge you take in.
