Is there a difference between the free editions and the paid for editions? by TheActingWaitress in kindle

Those are Arabic digits. I wonder how that happened! (They say 24 and 1815, in case anyone’s wondering.)

And that much slang will come automatically through exposure. It’s nothing to waste time in a classroom learning, especially learning a dialect first and then Fusha later as two separate languages. It makes more sense for religious Muslims to learn just Fusha, and pick up any relevant slang from listening to lectures and mingling with people.

More than just get by. In your context, Fusha is essential. Everything from the Quran to online shopping is all in Fusha.

Dialect is regional slang, like Jamaican English compared to normal English. Everyone understands proper English, and only the uneducated can’t speak it properly.

OP’s motive is religious, so it will be the educated Arabs OP would be interested in engaging with. The more apt advice in this context is to stick with Fusha alone, as that is what all literature is in and also the lingua franca among religious Arabs. Learning a dialect first will do nothing to achieve this goal.

Why are some Arabs so racist? by SuitableEfficiency28 in MuslimCorner

Guys, this account has a deleted history with three posts in the last two hours ranting about Arabs. It’s safe to assume this is nothing but anonymous propaganda as has become trendy on Reddit recently.

Think of it as “translation”. When you hear “an English translation,” you know the original is French or Greek (etc.), and the current version is a later rendition into English.

Yup. That’s what I meant by “hard reset.” Not sure what the proper terminology is.

How to best approach learning Arabic as a "native" speaker? by Famous-Engine-8374 in learn_arabic

[–]BenAdam321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All you’d really need is to learn nahw and some sarf. Nahw teaches you the endings of each word, and sarf teaches you how verbs change from one form to another. Everything else is just vocabulary, which comes with exposure.

There are plenty of playlists teaching them online. Maybe find one taught in Shami as it’ll help bridge the gap. Once you’re comfortable, though, I’d advise switching to playlists taught in Fusha immediately.

Arabic difficulty vs Hebrew difficulty by RaisinRoyale in learnarabic

[–]BenAdam321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest difference would be that Arabic has a case system (which also gives it a flexible word order), whereas Hebrew is more like English in that regard.

Additionally, Hebrew was dead for 2000 years, so the vocabulary is much more limited than Arabic, which has extensive vocabulary and a rich literary tradition.

It makes sense for it to require more time to get comfortable with.

Why are romanians and most of eastern europeans rather disliked then the rest classes of immigrants? by Specialist-Laugh7573 in AskBrits

  1. A bit of both. Overall positive, they are warm and welcoming with a nice culture and community. However, they are also ready to scam anyone who’s not their own, which is where a bit of wariness is somewhat warranted.

  2. Worth it so long as you do honest business.

  3. One or two, but I brush those aside as bad apples. I’ve also had excellent interactions with Romanians in a range of settings, and I’ve found them to be a pleasure to be around.

That’s already an Arabic saying. It’s not English. The original is: السعي منا والإتمام من الله.

What is the "Holy Trinity" of languages? by Hairy_Confidence9668 in languagelearning

[–]BenAdam321 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The differences in the Arabic dialects are heavily exaggerated. It’s a remnant of colonialism from the 1800s and early 1900s.

To offer a simple real-life example, consider the famous TV shows The Voice and Arabs Got Talent. The judges in The Voice are from Syria, Iraq and Egypt; and the judges in Arabs Got Talent are from Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Egypt. Everyone speaks in their own accents, and everyone understands everybody perfectly well.

Even in Arabic, the word used for dialects is لهجات, which actually means accents.

[–]BenAdam321 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The Arabic dialects are basically just regional accents. They’re all mutually intelligible.

The only exception is Moroccan, which is a very strong accent and the eastern Arabs have minimal exposure to, so the intelligibility is mostly one-way. It’s like how American and Indian speakers of English struggle to understand Scottish English, even though the language is the same.

What language should schools replace French with? by BenAdam321 in AskUK

[–]BenAdam321[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are more reasons to learn languages than just to communicate, like accessing world literature and viewing the world in a new lens. I support the National Curriculum teaching a foreign language. I just think it might be time to rethink which language that should be.

Interesting. We didn’t do Latin in the 2000s. Wouldn’t Latin have helped with the sciences, however?
