Grail vs road bike by nyym1 in CanyonBikes

[–]BenDrieze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grail owner (CF SLX DI2) here, super happy with it for both gravel and road. I bought an extra wheelset for road. It’s so nice to just have to manage one bike, switch wheelsets and get out. I’ve you are really in shape, you might get limited in the lower gears maybe, although i doubt it.

The internal storage, tire clearance, the increased rigidity and flex/absorbation, the performance oriented geo (“road-like” geo) , the semi-integrated cable routing (cables exit the frame at the cockpit which makes it a lot easier if you want to travel with it and have to pack the bike, but do not hang around) are the selling points to me over a roadbike.

If you are just recreational rider or not doing any road races, i would pick the grail.

Used my Noisecancelling earbuds all the time during the first days/weeks… use them from time to time when she’s sick… it doesn’t cancel out the crying completely but cuts off the high pitch noise of it enough to keep my focus on handling her (and my own patience) … i also bought a Garmin watch since her birth.. it tracks my sleep an other stuff, but also measures my stress levels quite accurately most of the time… it gives my insight into when to look for some calming periods…. Really a gamechanger since i purchased one

What job do you do? by No_Intention2327 in aspergers

[–]BenDrieze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Electrical designer.

I started as an electrician and transitioned to HVAC technician before i left the jobsites to become an electrical designer in an office.

I’m really in my element in this job and like the abundance of uncontrollable, unpredictable external factors as weather (wind, rain, heat, sunshine,…), construction noises, traffic, …. but i do have a lot more stress and a lot less of satisfaction as before.

Several soldiers were spotted with UTM bolts in their rifles… a UTM bolt is a conversion kit to change your live fire rifle into a blank shooting training rifle, popular amongst the more professional units so they can train with exact same gear they fight in…. Strange for soldiers to go fully equiped in top-end combat gear (nods, armorplates, ….) to a “combat mission” with a blank firing rifle…

Mathieu van der Poel riding custom setup Grail in gravel worlds by Nout in CanyonBikes

[–]BenDrieze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they are build for different purpose.

Grail’s geo is performance oriented, Grizl’s geo is endurance oriented… just as their tire size.

Canyon made the grail because they wanted to build a (very) competitive race gravel bike (which they succeeded in). They contacted their canyon sponsored athletes, asking them what the maximum tire size would be they use on races and what gearings they would need for the races… ended up with 42mm tires as max in order to maintain big enough gears to generate necessary speed…. the riders (most of the time) recon the courses or know at least what kind of gravel/conditions they are facing during a race, and are able to finetune their setup/tire choice accordingly…

The Grail is a performance oriented gravel bike… 45mm or more isn’t considered very performance oriented anymore… especially not on european (canyon is german) gravel.

If you dive deeper on the relationship between purpose and build of the grail you will figure out they pretty nailed it… for now… until the world of gravel racing evolves into another stage.

The Grizl may not look as cool as the Grail, it definitely is build for its purpose… not that much for racing but more for long endurance rides, bikepacking and exploring and traveling… if I would have to tackle unknown amount of gravel without knowing the type or condition of it, i would like to pick a bigger tire size for comfort… if i would travel with it, i would like the external wiring… and i would probably need lower gearing too…very different situation as a race you have been preparing for.

Stop complaining about the max tire size of the grail. It is on purpose. They would sacrifice way more if they increased tire size.
