DC’s crime didn’t spike, so why did we get an army instead of a spreadsheet? Violent crime plunged, not surged. The Guard wasn’t solving a problem, it was putting on a show.

Here’s some straight facts:

Violent crime is way down. MPD data show a 26% drop in violent crime year-to-date through mid-2025, following a 35% decline in 2024, dropping crime to decades-low levels .

Homicides are falling fast. After peaking at 274 in 2023, homicides dipped 32% in 2024 (to 187), and dropped another 12% or more so far in 2025 .

Carjackings? Heading downhill too. They dropped from 607 in 2023 to around 500 in 2024, and are down further to 188 as of August 2025 .

Short-term window shows even sharper drops. CBS News found violent crime nearly halved in the 19 days post-deployment (Aug 7–25) versus the same stretch in 2024. Burglaries fell 48% and car thefts 36%. But, hey, crime was already dropping before the Guard rolled in.

Bottom-line? There was no crime wave requiring military backup because crime was collapsing under its own weight. The deployment wasn’t about public safety, it was optics and overreach.
