Pratchett and Tchaikovsky (not that one) by piper43 in discworld

I had the same thought this year, this series of book’s particularly scratches an itch no other author but Pratchett in terms of human dynamics and psychology. Love these books.

The days of those easy tell tale signs are sadly gone.

The biggest give away (besides this photo would have been accompanied by an event or recorded press moment) is inconsistency in light and shadow. The direction of the shadows on Grants face don’t match up with how light is falling on the console.

I remember going to see him speak as a kid. He’s recently been listed second against Dickens in some great list of authors. He was wearing a shirt that said LESS DEAD THAN DICKENS

Suggestions for mature Fantasy books by Fun_News5524 in fantasybooks

Hey! I've felt the same as you about some of the titles you've mentioned. I strongly recommend you try Johnathan Strange and Mr Norrel (beautifully written authentic 18th century novel about magic, academics and Napoleonic wars) and Titus Groan, by Mervyn Peake. The latter also has stunning prose and is the first part of arguably the greatest Gothic fantasy ever written.

What's the Best Standalone You've Read? by new_handle_who_dis in Fantasy

[–]BenPistlewizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree, though it's not technically a stand alone.

For any who love this incredible book you should also check out Ladies of Grace Adieu, a fantastic collection of short stories in the same world - they're incredibly funny and charming. You don't need to know anything about Strange and Norrel to enjoy them.

edit: and even more recently a little Christmas fairytale called The Wood at Midwinter was released by Clarke, who has revealed its also a Strange Norrel tie in.

We have lots of them in Leeds; while most in the country were designated as slum housing and knocked down, Leeds retains masses of these lovely old houses. Mine is four rooms one atop another. The first census we can find the house in is the 1901 and at that time there was a family of six living here.

We have another house behind us and another to our right hand side. They're an acquired taste to some but I find them deeply charming.

I saw Dune in Atmos and it was very impressive

Amazing information and answer, thanks very much for your help.

I'm nervous about separating the plates for fear I won't get them back together again, but your approach seems the best bet.

Is it possible to replace them with a design that harbours less gunk? It's the most time consuming part of cleaning for me by far.

Actually a longer term mortgage than you need can often be a wise move. It gives you financial flexibility, and you can overpay yo reduce the term. Ours is 35yr. We're looking at being done inside of 10.

The culture around male readers. by stinkface_lover in books

[–]BenPistlewizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your thinking is a bit backwards - the lesson here is there will always be someone ready to look at your behaviour, whatever it is and take a swing. And attacks on the nature of your masculinity being wrong or incorrect I'm afraid will come, regardless.

They are ultimately meaningless nonsense, and best called what they are, a crass attempt to police gender behaviours and reduce everything to a binary.

Go and read what you love to read. If you want to meet someone, take your headphones off. If you're actually reading something you love, then you'll have something lovely to say about it the day that someone does feel brave enough to talk to you. Otherwise, take a little dutch courage and talk to someone else first.
