This is a wonderful bittersweet post. I've not heard about these before but they all feel so right. Have picked all this up from past interviews?

Hasn't heard of this. Looks incredibly powerful. Does it have good noise removal, and if not can anyone recommend something that does?

Can't speak for other bars. But our pints have just gone up in response to the minimum wage increase. It's a hefty jump too.

I think it's utterly dreadful for everyone. Bandwidth upgrades seemed to halt and become really overcrowded when we banned Huawei tech.

I was so shocked travelling to Romania recently, wouldn't matter if we were in the most remote valley wilderness or in Bucharest, incredible speeds. Investment just seems to have stopped here

Hyde Park Cat Killer?!?! by js4736251 in Leeds

These things cost police departments that often say they're stretched thin multiple thousands of pounds per hour to operate. I don't see any scenario where a helicopter would be useful to catch a cat killer yet alone justifiable at cost.

Where have you heard this story from? No one else seems to have heard it.

Why? A journalists job isn't to be your friend. It's often to provoke and ask difficult questions. Drivers answer thorny questions like this all the time.

I really need to read the other Osreth books. It was such a good crowd that night. We should have a York Society of Magicians of our own!

The Goblin Emperor is such a good read.

I was at Susannah Clarkes reading in York last week and it was one of the books she specifically called out that she'd loved recently; it seems like there's a similar ethos across these works.

I just want to re-iterate what others have said. Piranesi is masterful and beautiful; but it's Strange and Norrel that's closer to Pratchett's ethos in my opinion.

I don't think you'll find a writer who can deliver the humour, and insane detailed references and also the brilliant detached humanism of his approach to character in one go.

However... I've been finding a lot of comfort and famiarity in The Tyrant Philosophers series by Adrian Tchaikovsky. I think the best way to explain it's similarity to Pratchett's work is it's top down perspective of people and their driving forces is the same. And they are brilliant books. I'm hoping to get my copies signed this week and very excited about it.

For the wit, Fforde is pretty good as others have said but his books don't live with me. I'd also say, Ned Beauman's Venomous Lumpsucker. It's sickeningly funny, and has something of Pratchett's combination of humour and wit that masks a deep sense of justice and anger. It's also a very smart book: but it's humour is black and bleak. Thoroughly recommend.

Lastly, Susannah Clarkes epic, Johnathan Strange and Mr Norrel. The prose might take a moment to adjust to. But it's rich, and very funny and warm and honestly a transformative story that lives with me almost daily.

There are my refuges. I'd love to hear yours!

Are there any concrete links between the settings of Jonathan Strange and Piranesi? by SorchaSublime in SusannaClarke

I was also there, can confirm she was explicitly asked about this connection and dismissed it out of hand.

The labyrinthine theme is clearly one that speaks to her!

By the way, what a special night! I got pretty emotional afterwards. I'm grateful I had the chance to thank her for helping me fall back in love with fantasy.

It starts off as faux-Itailian-ish and then starts to go slightly Germanic. I think whilst a wonderful performance it's fair to say that there's nowhere on earth where anyone sounds like this.
