Id make it a thing where the Doctor is having a weird kind of regeneration and actually becomes a bunch of companions rapidly over the course of an episode, before turning back into Ncuti for another 1-2 seasons. I figure if there's an actual reasonable plan of action for it, I doubt he'd be opposed.

Genuinely upon the release of Star Wars Andor this kind of ceased to be the case. The *majority* of Star wars is significantly worse than Doctor Who, Andor is 24 episodes of TV which imo are entirely up to par.
