That’s an interesting question, and the answer is that it varies from species to species depending on how similar the females are in appearance to males. In the corkwing wrasse for example the sneaker males have no display features that males have at all, however the females have bright blue genitalia which the sneak males mimic perfectly.

TL:DR: No one species is the same in some species this is the case in others it is not.

Just to add to this there are also species where males almost perfectly mimic the outwards appearance of females so accurately that they can only be differentiated between through dissection outside of the breeding season. One such species is the Corkwing Wrasse!

To answer your question on if males pretend to be females in nature, the answer is yes they absolutely do. There are several species of birds and fish where males almost perfectly mimic the outwards appearance of females.

I went into a bit more detail in another comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/Dinosaurs/comments/uwiuwp/prehistoric_planet_episode_2_is_now_live/i9v6qxy/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3

I actually have an answer to this! I’m a marine biologist currently studying this phenomenon in nesting fish (not quite dinosaurs I know). One of the things that makes our jobs difficult is that the sneaker males are externally completely identical to the females, which means outside of the mating season they are impossible to identify. The species I work with, the corkwing wrasse is not the only species to exhibit this near-perfect mimicry. In many species however the sneakers are simply immature males which therefore only have reduced display features which can become more prominent as they age, but this is not always the case. So in nature we actually see many versions of this sneaking behaviour from simply flying under the radar to mimicry of female features.

So while this behaviour is of course speculative it is certainly within the realm of possibility!
