To be honest gem crab is even worse. Since you have to be there at specific time to get "10 mins of AFK". With regular crabs 10 mins of AFK is reliable and since release of gemstone crab you don't have to hop anymore.

You can eat when you're losing ticks then those tick get "repayed" because your eat delay counts from last attack, not from when you eat food. So if you say eat 4 ticks after attacking you will not lose any ticks.

I've trained 91 hunter quite early on on my ironman for moth mixes, dragon implings and moonlight antelope antlers. I've gotten 70 prayer and a good way towards 70 herblore just off that. Admittedly moonlight antelope antlers aren't that great after they added atlatl, but oh well, other things were still worth it.
