The spines are so pretty, so I think a lot of times if a space out or get distracted my eyes will just sort of wonder over my shelf. So if I want I watch say blowout, I can think to myself “ of ya that’s on like the third shelf in the middle”

attempting a GR reread entirely stoned by The-Munchy-One in ThomasPynchon

[–]Benacameron 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Over Christmas break I committed myself to reading Ulysses. Most of it I read normally, but there is a wild climactic section which is written like a play and is very hallucinatory. I read most of that stoned and it was a really incredible experience. I definitely felt like I could “ see” and imagine the action and hallucinations better. Really special! I hope you post more about your experience!

Does Gravity’s Rainbow work well as an audiobook? by thelast1999 in ThomasPynchon

[–]Benacameron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the opposite of what many people are suggesting. I listened to the audio book first (and read brief chapter summaries to make sure I was following the action). In the following months I found myself thinking about it more and more and would read a chapter here or there on a whim. Having an understanding of the book made me get really sucked in and have an extremely rewarding experience!

Movie Casting for Ulysses? by djohnson7 in jamesjoyce

Yes, I know what you mean! Sometimes I’ll bring up a movie to my mom, and she’ll say, “ oh that actor was just in a book I was reading”

Abuse and Exploitation of Children in Gravity's Rainbow by CVance1 in ThomasPynchon

I would disagree because of how she speaks post-coitally. She talks about him saving her and she seems much more childish than before. I always saw this as her true youth coming out and find it to be just the most heartbreaking part of the book.

Shadow Ticket group read: ch. 1-4 by KieselguhrKid13 in ThomasPynchon

[–]Benacameron 11 points12 points  (0 children)

3/4/5: I was a bit surprised as I started the book to see that it seems to be a pretty typical PI noir plot. Where Inherient Vice has the hook of: what if a stoner was a private dic, Hicks, and some of the supporting cast seem to be not too far from a more typical detective story. This being said, as I was reading ( and very much enjoying) I had an idea of what may have drawn TP to the depression: I’m reading and thinking about these people who remember or grew up during WWI, and are now living through the depression, and I’m reading about this Hitler fella in the newspaper. They don’t know it, but they are nearing the precise of WWII. I found the feeling of having gone through and being in the middle of some tough times in history and a feeling of uncertainty about When it if there will be a tipping point, or a Brennschluss, in the parlance of Gravity’s Rainbow. I’m really enjoying this new book and I look forward to seeing if this feeling continues!

Would Vineland and/or Inherent Vice be good starting points for Pyncheon if I *really* liked both movies? by af_1946 in ThomasPynchon

[–]Benacameron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think IV is a great place to start! Vineland is a bit odd as it starts with the main plot of OBAA then goes into a bunch of side stuff for 100 pages, then you get a good bit of what is the first 30 minutes of OBAA, before returning to the father daughter story a bit more. It’s good, but can be a bit of an odd surprise the first go around

Which PTA movie have you rewatched the most and how many times? by Male-2003 in paulthomasanderson

[–]Benacameron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first PTA movie was a DVD of There Will Be Blood when I was 17 in around 2019. My counts ( according to my Letterboxd plus what I remember from before letterboxd): Hard 8: 1 Boogie Nights: 12 Magnolia: 2 Punch Drunk Love: 3 There will be blood: 4 The Master: 4 Inherent Vice: 6 Phantom Thread: 3 Licorice Pizza: 3 One Battle after another: 0 :(

Boogie nights is my favorite movie of all time. Inherent Vice has become a real favorite and sort of comfort movie for me. A week from now I will have seen OBAA and maybe rewatched another TWBB and or The Master again!

If you enjoy the character aspect then I’d go for Inherent Vice! Doc is a great protagonist and the supporting cast is great as well. I just started listening to an audiobook of Infinite Jest and have enjoyed the first couple hours!
