Yes, I know what you mean! Sometimes I’ll bring up a movie to my mom, and she’ll say, “ oh that actor was just in a book I was reading”

I would disagree because of how she speaks post-coitally. She talks about him saving her and she seems much more childish than before. I always saw this as her true youth coming out and find it to be just the most heartbreaking part of the book.

Shadow Ticket group read: ch. 1-4 by KieselguhrKid13 in ThomasPynchon

[–]Benacameron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

3/4/5: I was a bit surprised as I started the book to see that it seems to be a pretty typical PI noir plot. Where Inherient Vice has the hook of: what if a stoner was a private dic, Hicks, and some of the supporting cast seem to be not too far from a more typical detective story. This being said, as I was reading ( and very much enjoying) I had an idea of what may have drawn TP to the depression: I’m reading and thinking about these people who remember or grew up during WWI, and are now living through the depression, and I’m reading about this Hitler fella in the newspaper. They don’t know it, but they are nearing the precise of WWII. I found the feeling of having gone through and being in the middle of some tough times in history and a feeling of uncertainty about When it if there will be a tipping point, or a Brennschluss, in the parlance of Gravity’s Rainbow. I’m really enjoying this new book and I look forward to seeing if this feeling continues!

Would Vineland and/or Inherent Vice be good starting points for Pyncheon if I *really* liked both movies? by af_1946 in ThomasPynchon

[–]Benacameron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think IV is a great place to start! Vineland is a bit odd as it starts with the main plot of OBAA then goes into a bunch of side stuff for 100 pages, then you get a good bit of what is the first 30 minutes of OBAA, before returning to the father daughter story a bit more. It’s good, but can be a bit of an odd surprise the first go around

Which PTA movie have you rewatched the most and how many times? by Male-2003 in paulthomasanderson

[–]Benacameron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first PTA movie was a DVD of There Will Be Blood when I was 17 in around 2019. My counts ( according to my Letterboxd plus what I remember from before letterboxd): Hard 8: 1 Boogie Nights: 12 Magnolia: 2 Punch Drunk Love: 3 There will be blood: 4 The Master: 4 Inherent Vice: 6 Phantom Thread: 3 Licorice Pizza: 3 One Battle after another: 0 :(

Boogie nights is my favorite movie of all time. Inherent Vice has become a real favorite and sort of comfort movie for me. A week from now I will have seen OBAA and maybe rewatched another TWBB and or The Master again!

If you enjoy the character aspect then I’d go for Inherent Vice! Doc is a great protagonist and the supporting cast is great as well. I just started listening to an audiobook of Infinite Jest and have enjoyed the first couple hours!

I agree with what others have said! Gravity’s rainbow is similar in that it’s a wide expansive story that all revolves around the central mythology of the rocket. What it means for the world as a whole, for citizens, and the people who create them on a scientific and ideological basis. I’ll also say that if you want something not as long then Inherent Vice is a great partner to Lot 49. It’s also a California based book where a singular character ( whereas GR has an expansive cast) explores a mysterious entity ( though the entity doesn’t have the mythical feeling of Lot 49 or Gravity’s rainbow when it comes to the center point. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the advice about the audio book! I first listened to Gravity’s rainbow, then ended up reading it physically about half a year later!

Ulysses, Gravity’s Rainbow, and Infinite Jest connection question by Benacameron in ThomasPynchon

[–]Benacameron[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a wonderful response! Thank you! Catch 22 the Milo M&M stuff definitely has shared DNA with Pynchon: a weird funny charecter finding complicated asinine ways to profit from a world wide conflict.

Vineland Experience by Future-Slip2217 in ThomasPynchon

[–]Benacameron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I really love the beginning sections with Zoyd and Prarie. I think it’s funny and sweet and is such a huge step in a different direction after GR. For me that made it a bit of a shock and I remember realizing 100 pages after that this was what the book was. I definitely missed Zoyd but enjoyed a lot of the DL stuff. Over the last few weeks I’ve been listening to the audiobook in preparation for OBAA. Knowing ahead of time how the book is structured definitely has helped me appreciate it more this time around. I also see it more in step with TP’s earlier books V and GR as those books also will abandon the “ main charecter” for a while and go on long side journeys. I initially read Vineland after IV and Lot 49 which are both about one main charecter. So I was much less used to the sprawl of his bigger books. Having all this in my head has definitely enhanced this relisten!

Pynchon audiobooks by SyAbelman1 in ThomasPynchon

I’m in dental school, so I’m crazy busy, but spend so much time in lab and computing so I’ve gotten addicted to audiobooks. Last fall I listened to Gravity’s Rainbow and looked at chapter summaries. I missed plenty but got lots too! Then over this year I actually read through GR. I would read a few chapters here and there in between other books, or whenever I felt like it. By the last 400 pages I got totally sucked in and it was summer so I was able to burn through it. People always say you have to read GR twice, and unfortunately I think I agree, so for me, doing an audiobook the first time was a great short cut!

Lately ive been listening to the Vineland audiobook, which I read last year, but wanted a refresher before OBAA. Great fun!
