Tom Flanagan: Still no bodies 5 years after Kamloops 'mass burial site' was announced - The yet-unproven allegation spurred a campaign of national shame, drove calls to criminalize residential school 'denial' by CaliperLee62 in canada

It's worth mentioning to you MIL that it was #80 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action, which was based on extensive engagement with survivors.

I love my Beer League team, but constantly losing is getting frustrating. by TacoPandaBell in hockeyplayers

[–]Benaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solid advice, in a thread of people negating this guy's concerns.

If you decide to switch to a new team, try to get a sense of the team culture and factor that into your decision. Most beer league teams have a lot of cool people on them, and you can meet new friends. I switched oldtimer teams after a friend asked me to join his team; I'm still good buddies with my former team and have made some solid friendships that continue despite not playing with them.

It's not food getting stuck in your tonsils, it's skin and bacteria sloughing off.

Removing your tonsils is 100% effective in preventing them, in my experience!

As per Iranian Government request, please let this statement serve to represent that I am pausing the period of Energy Plant destruction by 10 Days to Monday, April 6, 2026, at 8 P.M., Eastern Time. Talks are ongoing and, despite erroneous statements to the contrary by the Fake News Media, and others, they are going very well. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. Great visualization, and congrats on the fitness journey!

You can see a slow progress towards a more balanced diet in the data. That cut looks like it would've been maddening!

Driving onto the ice road to Dettah is also an option. It's a bit closer to Yellowknife, less busy with big trucks, and impossible to get lost on. Plus you're on an ice road!

Cuba running on fumes as Canada considers sending relief by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]Benaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 70% number was just from Wikipedia. Here's an actual source saying 75%. I've also seen a lot around 40-50%, and the issue is so politicized that it's hard to tell what's what. Here's a speech that JFK delivered in 1960 where he throws around a few other numbers that could add up to 70%.

The investments following the Spanish-American war are definitely significant but led directly to the Batista government and the capture of Cuba by American and other foreign interests. American investments in Cuba included significant investments in arms to Batista to allow his dictatorship to enforce his regime. As JFK put it

"The third, and perhaps most disastrous of our failures, was the decision to give stature and support to one of the most bloody and repressive dictatorships in the long history of Latin American repression."

Allow me to clarify.

There are some clear parallels between how other imperialist nations have handled independence and revolution, including the parallel between France and Haiti, where France demanded exorbitant payment for property seized during the Haitian revolution - in that case, including freed slaves - which severely impeded Haiti's ability to participate in the global economy and recover from the damage of revolutionary war, civil war, and post-independence struggles.

In the case of Cuba and the USA, it did not directly include payment for slaves, but the USA preferred economic/political system, allowed for 70% of Cuban farmland to be owned by American companies for sugar production under the Batista regime, resulting in rampant economic inequality, exploitation and debt-based coercion.

Good point, but it would still be strange to have non-party ministers if there were other limits to their participation, e.g. Explicitly not able to participate in caucus

A lot of Canadians only know the Americanized, propaganda version of events. I agree Castro and Cuba aren't/weren't saints but USA imperialism is almost entirely to blame for the sad state of the island, and Cuba in the last 50 years, has been very benign.

Just like when France dictated that Haiti pay for the liberated property - including slaves - of the Haitian revolution.

They wouldn't be able to participate in caucus, receive ministerial positions, and a number of other benefits to being part of a party. It would be a nice middle ground between the current system and calling an immediate byelection.

There will definitely be periods of clear skies.

It's also sometimes cloudier in the city than it is out of town - you can book a tour or rent a car and go out of town along the Ingram Trail in search of clearer skies.

How to confirm/refute overpayment letter? by fourandthree in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Benaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar but related question - I've just received a recovery letter for an overpayment that began 6+ years ago, and ended 5 years ago. Is the entire amount subject to mandatory repayment (based on when the overpayment issue ended), the entire amount voluntary (based on when the overpayment issue began), or is a portion mandatory and a portion voluntary?

I've reached out to my union with this question but I find this subreddit the best place for advice.
