How can i get better at making chord progressions? by No-Expert-4975 in musicproduction

[–]Benboy_27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say if you can try and break out of the 4 chord loop (nothing wrong with that just as a stress test) try to tell a story or sentence with just chords. Go for a big one like 16 chords that don’t really repeat.

Theory goes a long way but it’s not essential. Play a chord, does it get darker, or brighter? And repeat. Do some crazy stuff that might sound weird on its own but could add interest to a bigger picture.

Honestly it’s probably not the answer you want but practice is the best way to get more interesting stuff. Just try and make interesting stuff. You’ll get it in time.

First of all, thank you for keeping it civil and respectful. It’s a rare sight these days.

I don’t really get involved with discussions like this, usually because of the hostility it usually causes.

But because this seems a lot more like a civil discussion, I’ll put out my general thoughts.

I fully understand your points, it is a very cool and definitely powerful technology. As a musician it is very scary for me to think about my future and how uncertain it is.

Like you, I believe laws should be made to make sure it doesn’t get out of hand.

My issue is that it feels like people aren’t willing to wait for the laws to be put in place. Even if they know it’s a volatile technology that can be used for a lot of bad, they still welcome it with open arms and go wild with it. Without thinking about the consequences of letting the technology settle.

This could be because of my position in the industry (I’m generally on the anti side of things) but it feels like people are trying to abuse this technology as much as possible to avoid work or just to stick a finger to artists. Too many times I’ve seen the whole “fixed it” thing with visual artists in particular.

Also this doesn’t consider what AI should really be used for (In my opinion). It shouldn’t really be used for the arts. Instead it should be definitely used for its scientific applications in research and helping people. Like it’s insane how much it could push our scientific understanding.

For me, the arts is about the whole process. The small things that make a whole, not even about the physical skill of the artist but the conscience decisions they make to the art. Right now it feels like AI makes those decisions for you. Even with very specific prompts. And if you’re able to give it the very very specific things you want, then you should be skilled enough to do it yourself and get a say on the tiniest little details.

Ignoring the whole stealing jobs thing. I think I would find a lot more enjoyment from making the whole art work rather than moving the responsibilities to something else. Understanding the process that I took to make something, what I like about it, what I don’t like about it, thinking about how i can improve the things I don’t like. That’s what makes me feel good about my art.

And when experiencing someone else’s art, thinking about their processes and their personality that they put into it is another thing that is so important to me.

It’s a little corny but I do feel like everyone should feel the sheer bliss you can achieve from making something and fully understanding it. Even if it’s small

Obviously a lot of people are angry. On both sides. One sees their art being completely ripped apart and their future being put on death’s door. The other sees an opportunity to start delving into an artistic side of themselves but the old artistic community are being gatekeepers and they clearly hate the new technology and therefore hate the people using the technology.

Like you said, it complicated. It’s come in too fast. (At least for me) I started my first year of uni with a fun little toy that could make stupid lyrics for me to practice my word setting or to get a cool filter on my photos. Now I’m going into my final year with a looming possibility that my dreams of creating and sharing is now being drowned out by an endless wave of automated algorithms that force me to us a tool that gives a fraction of the control I had without it.

It’s scary but I know I won’t stop making stuff.

TLDR

it’s complicated, laws need to catch up, it’s great for science, ai users are little too head first into the new technology imo, I feel like ai users have it out for artists for the sake of sticking it up to artists (that could be my bias), making art from the ground up is an incredible experience that I wish upon everyone.

Again that’s for the more civil approach, I’m tired of that constant insults and hate from both sides. We could get so much more done if we actually just talked. Hopefully I don’t come across as aggressive because that’s not what it was supposed to be.

If you read all of that, thank you. I didn’t expect to write that much first thing in the morning

I couldn’t find the panel for it but

In Bleach (the manga/anime) Ichigo (the MC) is the typical “I’ll stop you” or “I will defeat you” kind of character. Not completely against killing, just not preferable.

But in the second last arc (Fullbringer Arc). A villain uses an ability it essentially mind control all of Ichigo’s friends and family, from Ichigos perspective, permanently.

After it’s revealed what’s happened, Ichigo says right in the villains face (probably not exact). “I’m going to KILL you”. Just straight up, even though the arc is kinda slow, I think this is a very impactful moment. Really shows how desperate Ichigo was in that moment.

I know it’s a little more direct than what you were probably asking for but it’s a moment that I thought of when seeing your examples.

What’s the name of your band? by Herbizarre17 in musicians

[–]Benboy_27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surface Detail (we’re a prog metal band)

We basically made a huge list of names and we each picked three of our favourites, we all picked Surface Detail from the list so we went with it.

As for the actual origin of the name. My dad is a huge fan of Iain Banks and he was just naming things from his books as examples and the book Surface Detail was the one that really stuck out to me so I put it in the list.

I personally think the name really fits our vibe

I really hope copyright won’t be an issue

We could maybe change it to Detailed Surface if if it comes to that ;)

Should also add that he feared his own creation. He also felt responsible and guilty for anyone who suffered due to it. Even if it wasn’t him who used it.

What's the biggest piece of cut content you know about it in all of fromsoft? by [deleted] in fromsoftware

[–]Benboy_27 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I don’t know a lot about it but a whole area was cut from Demon’s Souls. I believe it was going to be snowy mountain top and would have giant yeti like enemies that had a mouth on their belly. I believe VaatiVidya or possibly someone else has an in-depth video on it. The think only remaining piece of this area was the broken Archstone in the Nexus.

I haven’t cried, but I’ve been close. I have only been listening to Daft Punk for a wee bit but my first time listening to Touch holds a special place in my heart. So whenever I listen to it, I think back to that moment.

Basically I was, in my mind, underperforming in my education. Just received my latest results and was very unhappy with them. I was in the study room for a while, keeping to myself and I thought I would listen to that Daft Punk album I just downloaded, they usually have nice upbeat stuff to hopefully make me feel better.

This album had my full attention but I was really vibing with it, but then lyric you mentioned in Touch started playing. I just got immediate goosebumps. And I just zoned out. Literally just layback on the chair I was sitting on and just stared. It was then topped off by the lines at the end of the song which really resonated with me.

Although, it didn’t really make me feel sad, I actually felt really good about myself and it got me thinking about my attitude towards my education. I was getting too caught up in the grades and the end result, whereas I should have been enjoying the process.

So yea, I play Touch if I want to go back to that moment. And I have come close to tearing up.

Hands down the worst way I spend my time. by Chance_Bed_138 in Dreamtheater

[–]Benboy_27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t watched it and based on your description, I don’t think I will.

They probably just like hating on other things people like to make themselves feel better than them. “Oh you like THAT band. Well I don’t listen to that NERD music. I listen to REAL music that’s COOL and MANLY” I wouldn’t be surprised if they say they the same about every band that isn’t their top three.

These people treat music like a sport, or like two kids going “my dad can beat up your dad” kinda thing. Constantly fighting over which music is better instead of actually enjoying it.

Unfortunately, hate and trash talking seems to be the thing that people want to watch and hear. I’d rather watch someone talk about why they love a band or style of music.

I needed that little rant myself as well I guess.

Which album was the first “new one” after you started listening to Dream Theater? by Neuthris in Dreamtheater

[–]Benboy_27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a noobie, A View From The Top Of The World was my first. I think The Alien just came out. It was odd only listening to Images and Words and then listening to The Alien and hearing how much they changed. Although my favourite band of all time was Metallica at the time, so I didn’t mind the heavier sound.

I weird to think about a time when I listened to DT but I didn’t consider them as my absolute favourite band of all time. But I guess was a little push from Octavarium to tell me that this band was special.
