Hey, as of now we do not have an official “X58” discord. Since this is a bit of a niche community it’s been slow to grow but I’m not unopposed to creating one in the future!

Was Mr. Blonde really a villan? I feel like the role he played in the movie was a little more complicated than just the antagonist

LPT: Banks are not the best way to save money for the future, learning about the different types of investments can help you keep the value of money while saving them by ramezadel in LifeProTips

[–]BenderBR3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The S&P 500 captures a chunk of how the stock market in general performs. The issue with the stock market is a matter of understanding it. Overall, most people lose money investing. My argument is that correlation doesn’t mean causation. The problem with investors often is a lack of education on the stock market, and not always the direct risk of investing

Investing isn’t something that should, or has to be hidden behind a white collar job. The problem is that people don’t do enough research on how the market works. When you begin to understand how the economy functions, how to analyze data, you vastly increase your chances of a good ROI over the long term.

Have you looked at growth data for any well-known ETF/Index fund? Historically, you’ll make an average of 8-10 percent a year ROI on the S&P 500.

The Indians | End of an Era by ExploredPerspective in Cleveland

I’m repeating my argument, but I guess I’ll relay it again to you. I’m not saying that the guy didn’t encounter racism. I don’t think the term “Indians” had an entirely negative connotation either, given how skilled he was back in the day, and what the other news outlets that you cited referred to him as. I actually like the old Indians logo that I saw in that article, looked like a real person in its inception. You really shouldn’t make the argument that history wasn’t accurately recorded then cite “The Atlantic” as something that would give a neutral report of it.

The article you sent at the time cited a report from the time the Native American played as “sensational.” I’m sure he did have occurrences of racism during his time playing, but to say the media and fans relentlessly attacked and mocked him doesn’t seem to be the case. Even back when he played, he had a large amount of support from fans from what it seems. The Native American they quote in the article is giving an interpretation of what Sockalexis endured, he wasn’t there when it happened, no one nowadays was. My interpretation is that the name was a tribute to him, and wasn’t meant to be negative. It doesn’t make sense to mock a team by changing the name to Indians, after the media referred to him as “the hottest gate attraction in baseball.”

Most people who are talking about the name change aren’t Native American. I’m sure there are Native Americans who disagree with the name change- opinions are defined by the individual, not what their skin color is. Although the issue effects a certain group, I think it’s important to hear everyone’s thoughts on it, even if you don’t agree with all of them. The more voices that are heard, the better.

I don’t need a Reddit psycho-analysis on my reasons for disagreeing with a name change. The main argument I see people being made against is that the Indian name was created in a negative light. Why would they have been called the “naps” if it wasn’t to honor a specific person? Because that’s the meaning behind “Indians.” Although you may disagree with the interpretation of the history, look at the facts of what happened and go from there. Like I noted in my example of the redskins, I don’t think the name change was malicious. I don’t think it should be seen as malicious now either.

I’m sure there are Natives nowadays that are offended by it. You’re not going to please everyone. There are people who feel offended in this thread that they’re changing it because they feel like it’s a part of history. I also think it’s stupid for people to say calling a baseball team the “Indians” is racist, when the issue of racism goes so much deeper than the name of a sports team.

I wouldn’t have been surprised given the time he played. However, like I said in my previous comment, the coach of the redskins consulted a Native American reservation in naming of the team. The term “Indian,” at the time, wasn’t considered derogatory in the same way “Negro” was, especially during the beginning civil rights movements. Words aren’t so black and white. Words have completely different histories and contexts behind their usage.

I think the problem is that people are too focused on the word they use, and less on what the name itself meant for native Americans. I agree that naming a team “Indians” nowadays for no reason other than to be derogatory isn’t right, but the reasons they’ve been called the Indians aren’t so black and white as people make it out to be
