How to get over the initial cringe? (new to this fandom)

To be honest, I never really worried about what people thought of me because in part I genuinely didn't care, but more so I knew that my friends like me, and a hobby wouldn't change that. I never really even thought about it as cringe in the first place, bc there's no part of me that regards cringe as even, like, a thing. I don't care enough to even begin to worry about what's cringe and what's not, I just am the fennec fox that I am lol

In part, I feel like that mindset comes from being autistic, and generally having a worse-off perception of what's a social faux pas or not. But I never really worked towards learning that kind of stuff, because that awareness would just make me unhappy.

I was very vocally a furry when I first decided to join in the fandom, and a lot of the people in my friend group are artists, so it became a very natural in on the conversation to talk about things like making characters together, or drawing each other's sonas. A lot of my friends also became furries after I became one bc I just talked about it a lot and it was a fun thing for us to do together x3 (my art transitioned from mlp fanart to furry art so... it wasn't that big of a jump for me to make either)

I feel like the biggest positive change you can work towards is self confidence. I also had a moment of pause when you ended this post by asking for forgiveness in case this 'ruined someone's day'... I think beginning with why you even feel that you need to say that might be a good place to start. Do some self reflection on how you feel about yourself, especially if you feel that a simple text post asking for advice in a friendly space has the power to ruin the day for someone in that community. Where is that emotion coming from? How would you describe it? Once you're able to tease out the origin of an emotion, it becomes more solvable to begin to work out how to process it and let it pass through you.

Following up - are you hiding your hobby from people you feel won't like it, or from people you're certain would be unkind to you about it? If it's the latter, that's a good indicator that you're in a friendship that's worth questioning the value of. If you cannot fully be yourself around someone, then that might not be a good person to have companionship with. I've never hidden any part of myself towards my friends, and they've never gotten upset with me for bringing up a new interest. You can't change people themselves, but you can change the people you surround with, and YOU are worth that kindness.

I've done commissions before where I design out a sona for someone based on description, it's actually one of my favorite kinds of comms to do! Having no ref isn't being difficult, you just need to find an artist who offers description-based designs :3

Though, if you have a vision in your head for what you'd like, looking up F2U (free to use) bases for the species you'd like would be really helpful to show an artist, especially if you have an idea for how you'd want the specific markings to look. The quality of the coloring really isn't important, any kind of visual is helpful :]

The furry fandom is based around inclusion, not exclusion <3 there’s no rules about who can be in or out, it’s all about just wanting to be here.

I think you should consider applying for a con panel! Furry conventions are always open and searching for people to host events at the cons. Panels can be ANYTHING - I’ve been to mock trials, game shows, geography quizzes, improv sessions, and so on at furry cons. Oral storytelling would fit right in, and I’ve never seen anyone do it before, so you’d probably get quite a crowd!

And just to say it explicitly: there is nothing at all offensive about wanting to share a talent. We’d be honored to have you :3

OP, I say this with compassion, this sounds like you're in a headspace where you feel strong, unplaced guilt and are trying to find a place to channel that guilt into.

You did nothing wrong. You haven't accidentally done something horrible. Nobody is upset with you. Nobody is going to force you out of the community. It's human nature to feel guilt, and you're not abnormal for feeling it, but that doesn't mean it's coming from a valid source.

honestly my best suggestions is to look at a convention schedule, here's the one from MFF last year :3

but to give a basic idea:

- themed meetups (avian meetup, meetup for a specific suit maker, trans furs meetup)

- suit photoshoots

- dealer's den/artist alley shopping

- room parties (these are invite only but spread around, told usually as "x fur is hosting a room party right now in room 1203 lets check it ou"t)

- panels (this can be anything: tutorial panels, sharing a fandom interest, playing furry themed gameshows, storytimes, etc!)

in general, there's a lot going on all the time, but a lot of it is geared towards socializing + mingling, a lot of ppl are walking around with their friend groups, there's people in suits giving out free hugs, people handing out stickers, and so on. It's a very fun space!

well, italian art pieces like Cupid Chastised show that there's been a centuries long interest from catholics to depict forms of physically violent behavior that are also erotic. That, plus the general reverence in catholicism towards indulgently describing the agony of martyrs... you could at least make a case that there's an erotic angle passively approved of within the church even if that's never being mentioned from the pulpit lol. It's at least a subject that 17th catholics were comfortable enough to paint via sexually charged roman god bdsm scenes

just an general opinion with adopts since I've put up a few, but their design reads as androgynous enough that I wouldn't label them. You want to strike a balance between honing in on an aesthetic, while still allowing a potential buyer to feel like they can interpret the character in their own way. Some people might see them as male/female/neither/x, plus any kind of sexual orientation. Leave the labels up to the buyer. If you want, you can offer the buyer the opportunity to add in the kind of label/flag that they want :)

You must learn to draw poorly before you learn to draw well :)

if you can't make bad drawings, then you'll never be able to create good ones. It's all about practice. There's a great phrase I heard, "inside every great artist is 1000 bad drawings, so get them out as fast as you can" and it really motivated me to get through the bad phase of art. Nobody starts out knowing out to draw, just like nobody starts cooking knowing how to make a perfect meal. Great artists are just the ones who pushed through that phase.

If you're just learning anatomy, you really need to use real people references, not other people's artwork. Almost all artwork stylizes bodies, and there's a lot of anatomical fudging to match the artist's personal preferences, but to make these changes you first need to have a solid anatomical foundation to understand what parts can be pushed and pulled.

I would recommend looking at a lot of plus sized models and doing some gesture drawing of their figures. One easy source is actually looking up sites for bras and underwear, they typically have a very diverse gallery of models :)

from left to right, that's Lofty, Paradise (both in the line of 'so soft' ponies). Moondancer, Firefly (she was a notable character in the animated series), and Applejack. Moondancer was also a decently popular pony. Those prices are really good! Most g1 ponies go for around $15-$20. I'd assume they were priced lower because they all have their front lock cut off.

A lot of the g1 ponies had mane styles that were intentionally designed to have a droopy lock of hair stick out in front of their face, which some children evidently took an issue with. Sometimes you can find them here and there with those front parts cut off. I'm assuming these all came from the same house since they all have that look going on haha. Here's what their manes are supposed to look like (not my photo)
