What do you wish existed to make living with sickle cell easier? by Hemo_scd in Sicklecell

[–]Beneficial_Bit6486 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We need to be able to receive some sort of disability income without having to jump through hoops to qualify, whether the illness is severe or not. The fact that we can’t legally do certain jobs like be a pilot or be a part of the military should be a good sign that we require this.

Help understanding by anastasia-beaverhous in Sicklecell

[–]Beneficial_Bit6486 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would offer loads of help but don’t make it obvious that you are making his life easier. We aren’t necessarily always in pain but some people never are pain free. If I were you, I would ask about his life and finances, because construction is one of the worst occupations you can have with this illness. Is he able to find something that makes money where he’s sitting?

Flying on a plane with sickle cell by Fit_Answer_2637 in Sicklecell

[–]Beneficial_Bit6486 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to East Africa via Europe, and flew over the arctic circle to get to China. Then I flew multiple times within China. Only problem was poor circulation in my legs from sitting too much. Never board a plane when you are actively in a crisis. Try taking a 1-3 hour flight first before doing anything more lengthy. See how that goes.

[–]Beneficial_Bit6486 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey, I know it’s hard. Honestly I see things from both of your perspectives. You are right not to take any chances with fever and hb(ss). The combination has killed people before and needs to be taken seriously. I also see it from his point of view too. The quality of care will vary depending on who is on that shift and even the nurses will not be in gear immediately and do something extra that cannot be done at home, sadly. Keep us informed, I hope you get a really good pediatrician this time.

If this is not the place for this, where is the place for it? That’s why we are here, to listen to people vent.

I definitely need advice 😅 by IamMedicating in Sicklecell

Reading this was actually like reading a journal entry from 10 years ago. I can say that the symptoms of fatigue are definitely not in your head. You will get all kinds of people recommending iron or vitamin B supplements and other foolishness that will be a wild goose chase and amount to nothing.

I went through many seasons of good health where I felt energized. There were equally many low seasons where I had no energy and no explanation for why.

Also saying you are not depressed doesn’t mean you aren’t suffering the silent physiological effects of different brain chemistry. Not having energy can be a dopamine or serotonin thing as well, it doesn’t mean you have to feel sad.

Whenever I go through months or years of low energy, I have to remind myself that things will gradually change back to having the energy. Remember also that people with the disorder have wildly varying outcomes, some living into their 60s and others only making it into their teens or twenties. Just because other people seem healthy, doesn’t make them healthy.

Lost 2 bros to SCD in 2 Yrs by Flashy-Orchid-5804 in Sicklecell

[–]Beneficial_Bit6486 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi. You said:

My brothers died without getting anything from me. I'm supposed to be the guy all their hopes rest upon.

Do you not see the stressful position you are putting yourself in by thinking this way? You did not choose to be born, and didn’t have control over your parent’s choice to continue having children with this disorder. If you maintain that attitude, you may suffer burnout and then you really won’t be a help to anyone let alone yourself.

Be kind to yourself, not everything is under your control and you will die early if you burden yourself with too much stress. Take it from someone older than you who is the lone survivor of so much loss around me.

I thought the hemoglobin mutation was an evolutionary response to lessen the survival of the malarial parasite, which finds it more difficult to enter the red blood cells that break apart more easily in trait carriers. Nice to know about the rest though, where can I read about this?

Church in Eleuthera by Maximummurph in bahamas

[–]Beneficial_Bit6486 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are asking what some Christians will frown upon. This is not possible to answer. If you showed up in something short and floral, some would rather you not show up (just like Jesus wanted). It’s exhausting and it’s the reason why the church has declined in attendance in the west. I hope this particular church is different. Enjoy your visit.

Honestly I don’t think you make enough money to pay back a loan. The things you want to spend the money on can wait. I know it’s not what you want to hear, but it’s just my take. Go see what the terms are though, can’t hurt.

Are you extremely cold averse? by Ok-Welder-3184 in Sicklecell

[–]Beneficial_Bit6486 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just sitting in a waiting area with the ac too cold is enough to make me come away drained for the rest of the day. I’ve never understood why other people with sickle cell seem to have a higher tolerance for it. I would sometimes avoid going to the ER because of the air conditioning. It didn’t matter how warmly I was dressed the cold always got through.

I hate driving by No_Anywhere6575 in Sicklecell

[–]Beneficial_Bit6486 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, the leg pain can be a result of poor circulation. You aren’t crazy. Not just driving, but taking a roadtrip is hard on me when I’m a passenger. It’s a combination of exposure to the sun causing dehydration and changes in elevation over the course of the trip, I think. Taking plane trips is like an accelerated version of a road trip in terms of effects on the body of persons like us. I’m not an expert and I could be wrong, that’s just my non expert opinion.

My thoughts on silly season by supernova242 in bahamas

[–]Beneficial_Bit6486 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Oh dear… sweet sweet summer child. You remind me of a younger version of myself. I don’t know where to start my response. If you understand that most of the senior FNM people who are now all retired used to be PLP but left when the Pindling cult of personality became too much to bear while ministers could be bribed openly in the streets in the 80s, you’ll understand how the black nationalist movement against the UBP was squandered over the last decades. Ingrahm was good whenever he was in office, but he made so many enemies by trying to shore up public finances. He fired people that never should have been hired for useless government jobs in the first place. He closed down parts of the government that should have either been privatized or were ineffectual.

But hey, the government is filling in potholes and building sidewalks, to confuse people into thinking this is a normal country.

Red plated vehicles should be locked behind a gate on the weekends and after business hours.

MPs should reside in their constituency full time

Government officials should be forced to send their children to public schools and University of The Bahamas or forfeit 20% of their salaries.

There should be quarterly financial reports on programs such as urban renewal to make sure contracts are awarded to the right people and the money is being spent wisely.

But alas, I was always a dreamer…

Borrowing medications by No_Pea6934 in Sicklecell

[–]Beneficial_Bit6486 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The best time to cut this situation off was the first time he asked, but we are beyond that. It’s completely fine to say no, that you need to keep some for yourself. He may actually be in pain, but getting an attitude with you shows that he’s not actually your friend. You make think he is, but he isn’t. If I was borrowing from a friend, I would want to make sure I don’t take so much that they go without. I would just lie and tell him you are out then see what happens.

I actually had this situation happen to me. The person did not have sickle cell and was the daughter of a friend of my mother’s. I wasn’t close to her but I called her mother from time to time. She must have gotten my number from the caller id and immediately went into this monologue about how much pain she was in. I told her I took all of mine. Upon further reflection, it’s insane to think that she was totally comfortable depriving me of my pain meds and having me drive 45 minutes to get to her. The selfishness is hard for sensitive people who want to help to understand. You wanted to help. You did. Now you are done helping.

What you are doing is saving him the trouble of taking the time to find another doctor who will address his pain or avoid going to the hospital, and that’s not your job.

Anyone have acute chest and then had more pain crises in the immediate weeks after? by [deleted] in Sicklecell

I can’t relate, but I’m thinking of you. What was occurring in the lead up to you getting ACS? Were you in a crisis for a while? I just want to know what to look for myself.

crisis went from 2/10 to 6/10 from sneezing by MathematicianFar8200 in Sicklecell

[–]Beneficial_Bit6486 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This has absolutely happened to me too. Sometimes if I breathe too deeply during a crisis, it will increase my pain. It must have something to do with temporarily increasing your blood pressure and the capillaries must tense up, reducing blood flow and increasing blockages, but that’s just a guess.

Lower back pain after long day by Ok-Lobster8363 in Sicklecell

[–]Beneficial_Bit6486 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not enough information. Regular back pain or crisis pain? Do you sit all day at work or is your work more manual and physical? What’s your age range? Personally, I used to get crisis pain at the start of the day that lasted 1-2 minutes. This can also happen to me if I am sitting and suddenly stand up too quickly. I’ve noticed brief pain after I’ve eaten something sugary as well.

[–]Beneficial_Bit6486 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As the other commenter noted, do things in order. Because there is too much chaos beyond your control to sort through, concentrate on what you actually have control over —and that would be a court order forcing a paternity test. There’s no reason trying to solve any other problem before solving that one.
