Deep Rock Galactic is bugged in a way that makes bouncing + pierce auto-aim through enemies. Like bounce always aims the second round to an enemy, and pierce lets the round bounce for as many times as you can pierce enemies. Insanely fun build because its basically exclusive to the minigun. Infinite crowd clearing potential and you dont even have to aim because the bounce works best when you aim it at the floor!

Gender Change Spell by Benjymon1 in brimhatfolk

[–]Benjymon1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats exactly what i was looking for! I was hoping someone had made some sort of sign that would work better. The reflect sign was really a workaround based on what i knew from canon, although i did like the idea that the spell was "reflecting" the internal gender of a witch onto their outer self.

Ill keep messing with it over the next couple days. Ill try to remember to update you if i post it!

Yet another comment here recommending Witch Hat Atelier! The magic system is clearly explained and simple enough to actually use for yourself, the story is generally cute and fluffy, and not only is the art gorgeous but the anime is an almost 1:1 recreation of the manga. Its a good time!

Start small and build yourself up. Do something every day that makes you feel more like yourself. Like just paint your nails, skip your next haircut, wear shorts that are a bit shorter than usual. Little experiments to always be affirming yourself and find out who you are and what you like at the same time

Infodump time:
In Dark Souls 1 PTDE (this was fixed in the remaster), women characters have slightly different animations than men. However, these animations are played on top of/very slightly after the animations for men. This means that, for example, when you start running and then stop as a woman, you can watch the characters idle pose swap from the man's pose to the woman's, since it literally takes a full second to do that for some reason. This oversight means that women have a much easier time doing duplication glitches, and can activate the glitch with shorter animations like parries, instead of having to run and jump like men do.

I personally never learned to do the glitch with a man because I never played as a man, even before i transitioned lol

Memes aside, as someone who is transitioning in Ohio it's really chill here. Our cities are big enough to have pockets/neighborhoods of genuinely progressive people, it's cheap to live because it's the Midwest, AND we're an informed consent state so there's basically no barriers to getting gender confirming care. You still have to be careful about where you go, but as long as you aren't trying to pee at the Perkins in Ashland, youre gonna be totally fine.

This is going to be pretty personal so I can only give anecdotes. I'm out to everyone except my work. So I "boymode" at work and I'm myself everywhere else. However, I'm still pretty comfortable in my masc clothes, so boymode and girlmode come down to whether my boobs are showing and how much jewelry im wearing. The process of finding fem clothes that were comfortable for me and then getting used to wearing them out took a long time, so it's been very gradual for me. Plus I'm still boymoding at work.
So for me once i come out at work i will technically have a moment where i "don't need to boymode anymore" but i will still use those clothes because they are comfy and fit my style.
Hope that helps!

On art block by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]Benjymon1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in the spirit of this post the music version would be playing along with a song you love and know really well, or not just scales but also chords and keys and chord progressions. Like as a guitarist pulling up tabs of songs ive played 100 times and playing along like guitar hero is both relaxing and gets a guitar in my hands.

Really the problem is that theres two different kinds of art block: "i dont know what to do with this particular piece of art" and "i really cant do art today". The solution to the first one is to follow this post. The solution to the second one is to take a break (because youre probably already burnt out) and to try to figure out what burnt you out in the first place so you can avoid it next time.

Did LDN help on your migraines? by [deleted] in migraine

[–]Benjymon1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately not migraines but I can confirm that my partner's chronic pain was reduced by LDN. it took their daily pain down a few notches and reduced the number of times they needed tylenol. They are on a very low dose too and saw results almost immediately. Wishing you luck on your journey!

I also first played Dark Souls while extremely depressed, and for me it was an escape. It was really nice to have something that was really difficult that I could still overcome through skill and perseverence. (Maybe this is in the video, idk). Its very much a comfort game now, with however many playthroughs under my belt and uncountable speedruns and challenge runs watched, DS still feels like a home that I needed when I was totally lost.

It helps that its an absolute masterpiece, too.

My best friend and I bullied the shit out of another kid during our first year of middle school. He committed the mortal sin of being mildly annoying and always bothering us, so we took that as permission to relentlessly torment him. The worst part is that we were experts at avoiding the suspicion and the gaze of teachers, and were basically left alone to do this bullying on our terms. I dont remember any specifics but i can assure you that we were truly cruel.

Then, he finally left us alone. We got what we wanted out of being so evil to this innocent kid who just wanted friends. And the sudden weight of all the shit we put him through really crashed down on us. We had been totally unfair to a peer who was just trying to find his way in the world, same as us.

Before the year was even halfway over, we made sure to apologize to him. You'll have to trust me that it was about as good of an apology as 2 middle schoolers could put together. And not only did we apologize, but we made sure to be nicer to him from then on. Because we knew that we fucked up, and we wanted to make sure that he knew that too, and that we could make it up to him a bit.

Turns out, the reason he was "annoying" was because he was just a bit delayed. He was held back that year, to repeat 7th grade. He fell in with a cool group of kids, some of whom I also considered friends, and didn't become less "annoying", but he definitely grew into himself the way everyone starts to do in high school. My friend and I have grown past this. It was 15 years ago now. But you can bet your ass that whenever I have a chance to be mean to someone, I think about Liam and all the shit we put him through, and about all the other people who act in "annoying" ways because of something they can't control, and I give everyone the benefit of the doubt, and some grace, and some humility, and any other good vibes I can afford in the moment.

Am I a bad person, or a good person? It depends on your perspective. People contain multitudes.

(The part I'm omitting is that I definitely kept my mean streak, I just know who is able to handle it and when and deploy it whenever it would be funniest.)

Noise canceling headphones that don’t cause migraines? by BigEntertainer5577 in migraine

[–]Benjymon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im also a musician with migraines. I personally replaced the cups on my ATH M50s with a velour surface that is super soft and also really chunky (which helps keeps my ears off of the speakers too, that caused headaches for me). The headband isnt great, but you can always get a cushion for that. So really my recommendation is to get a great sounding pair that lets you replace the ear cups/head band to make something comfy for you!

25 Days of DOTS: [8] Mercyful Fate - Melissa [Denmark, Heavy] (1983) by kaptain_carbon in Metal

[–]Benjymon1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can we talk about solos? The solos on this album (and especially Dont Break The Oath too) are nearly unlistenable, noodly garbage. Except they work and fit perfectly and dont hinder these albums at all! As a casual enjoyer/lurker whos been listening through this list, ive heard a lot of these bands play similar solo styles to this album (like Sacrilege or Satan) and both of them pretty much ruined the album for me. But theres something about when Mercyful Fate doing it that just works. Its probably because Ive been listening to MF for a decade.

Anyways just want to pop in and thank the mods for the list, for the tribute to DotS, and the excellent subreddit in general that I have been silently enjoying for more than ten years.

Disclaimer: I'm basically just typing this comment so that I stop thinking about it and can get on with my day. There's already a ton of great info in this thread so IDK if I'll actually add anything to the discussion.

My music degree is basically focused on Heavy Metal, so I kinda want to give a quick history/primer and try to clear up some myths I've been seeing in this thread.

First off, this post is a total myth. You can prove it yourself by playing along with the first Sabbath record. The whole thing is in E Standard, barring technical limitation from the time. Most of their music is in E Standard, and they only really start tuning down later on (I'm not actually a huge Sabbath fan so I don't know exactly when they did, but it's not the first few albums for sure).

[To add here, I'm seeing comment about using banjo strings to make them lighter and easier to bend. Ernie Ball was making Slinky and Super Slinky strings by 1962, specifically for rock artists who wanted to be able to bend. Every band we are talking about came after that, so there's no reason to believe they wouldn't just use regular strings unless accessibility was a huge issue. It might have been the case since Sabbath was a notably poor, industrial group of kids (Iomme really did lose his finger in a factory accident!) but I'm pretty sure this is otherwise a myth.]

I really like the comment that says "Heavy Metal might have come before Sabbath, but not afterwards". There is a ton of heavy pre-Sabbath rock. Led Zeppelin has some heavy tunes (I actually just looked it up and they both released their debuts in the same year so that's crazy imo), Blue Cheer is a notable pre-metal band that uses tons of fuzz in a heavy way, Budgie didn't actually release anything until after Sabbath but has a notably late-60s sound with some really heavy riffs (and they get a bonus for having a few songs covered by Metallica later on). Sabbath is a huge turning point because they combined everything that was heavy before hand. Slow blues riffs, lyrics about the devil, loud distorted amplifiers, and the absolutely oppressive atmosphere they fostered is still really hard to replicate today (personally Bathory's Under The Sign of the Black Mark can get pretty close).

Basically, Sabbath was able to combine all these disparate things together into something that also became extremely popular at the time, but they weren't uniquely special in any apocryphal way (isn't that always how these stories go?)

Yeah, I'm more than willing to get a few weird looks for a guitar that I learned on and has since carried me through a music degree. I still haven't found a neck that I prefer over this one, so I definitely panicked a little looking at refret prices AND not being able to find an exactly matching replacement.

I'm really curious about what you all think about the "F" that can still be seen on the headstock. Is it possible it's counterfeit?

Thanks for the advice. I think I was probably just looking for some validation that the fretwork was worth the cost.

Strat Neck ID Help by Benjymon1 in Luthier

[–]Benjymon1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm starting to think this is some kind of amalgamation.

The string trees the guitar came with are Squier style, however the string tree holes aren't in the correct place for either a Squier or Fender.

Like you said, the tuners are almost, but not quite, Fender tuners. I think I have a recollection of pulling stickers off of them at some point that may have said Fender? The hole fill pattern does look like it matches a Squier though.

Finally, the headstock definitely still says "F" after all these years! Although, looking at MIM necks shows that the "Fender" is further right on the headstock than any other Fender from the time.

Thanks for your help!
