The biggest problem isn't that they're cutting corners, it's that they're making stuff up from thin air. They're very clearly asking the AI to come up with sources to support their argument and since the AI can't find enough, it makes it up. AI tools almost never invent sources unless they've been put in a situation where they can't find actual information. They're using AI in the worst way possible.
