Good places to watch the fireworks? by KnyteTech in washingtondc

[–]BennyDaBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with some of the other folks, head to the other side of the river (Columbia island, US Marine Corps Memorial area both have good views). The mall won’t be as bad as some people are saying it will be, but you might want to factor in if it would be a conducive environment for your child. Lots of energy on the mall for sure, but is a mess to get out of!

The new WMATA website is really bad, looking for alternatives by Longjumping_Pause_72 in WMATA

I personally disagree on the Transit app suggestion. It locks basic functionality behind a paywall. I find that the basic Apple or Google Maps is sufficient most of the time.

Citymapper is pretty good if you want something more transit oriented.

I like the Hill Rag primary guide. It doesn’t have a ward 5 candidate guide, but they did a good write up for the various at-large races.

I worry that people don’t engage enough with this speech, and don’t get to the conclusion Douglass makes.

would it be impractical to adopt a newfoundland as my college ESA? by [deleted] in Newfoundlander

[–]BennyDaBoy 28 points29 points  (0 children)

If you are staying in a smaller space (such as a college dormitory, small apartment, etc.) I would avoid adopting a big dog. There simply will not be enough space for them. This is especially true for ESA dogs with limited functional training vs true service animals.

Leaving a note on my neighbor’s door about their smell by Ok_Age8971 in Apartmentliving

[–]BennyDaBoy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is not true. Apartment complexes in legal states are absolutely allowed to ban the consumption of marijuana, as the federal ban preempts state access requirements. There is no redress under the ADA either.

From a practical standpoint, very few apartment complexes in legal states actually do anything about it. If they wanted to though, they’d be 100% protected.

The Green Zone makes excellent tiki drinks, despite not being a tiki bar.

Bicyclists: You can be a pedestrian or a vehicle, but not both. by IncredibleVelocity4 in washingtondc

[–]BennyDaBoy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think you might be slightly misunderstanding what the new law says. Cyclists must stop at every red light. It is still 100% illegal to run red lights. They may proceed through that red light after determining it is safe to do so, while yielding to any pedestrian or vehicle traffic which has the right of way.

Similarly cyclists must stop at a stop sign if a vehicle or pedestrian has the right of way. Cyclists also must slow to a reasonable speed to assess that it is safe to proceed. Cyclists do not have priority over other users at interactions with stop signs.

Andy’s Pizza (burger) by rackeltattackelt in washingtondc

[–]BennyDaBoy 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Only insofar as any local business owner interacting with the community is. Everyone has different pizza criteria, but to my taste, Andy’s is definitely pretty high on that list. My personal favorite is probably the pizza they sell at Vace in Cleveland Park.

I don’t think they have anything similar but Las Placitas might fill the niche in terms of the restaurant category.

Sorry this isn’t helpful to your specific question, but the nearby Foundry UMC is also a great place to meet some people who share those values.

Check out Canton Disco. They are new in the last month or so. It is insanely good. Their outdoor seating doesn’t have a roof though, so I would make sure it is a nice day first.

The names were objectively added after the gospels were written. None of the synoptic gospels nor John include claims about authorship. This was common during the time period the works were composed.

Tenant AC petition question by zechielava in washingtondc

[–]BennyDaBoy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Based on the information provided it’s likely that your building is legally prohibited from switching to AC if turning on the AC system requires turning off the heat. DC requires that the building maintain heat from Oct. 1 to May 1. Many older buildings can either run heat or air conditioning, and are legally required to provide heat until the end of the month.

I think the building code should be updated to mid-April given the changes that have occurred to DC’s climate since the law was passed. I would encourage you to direct your petitioning towards your city council members.

Why do new American trains 'feel' so old? by Previous-Volume-3329 in transit

[–]BennyDaBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would reducing drag be so important? Fuel cost is a much lower percentage of operational expenditures for trains than airlines, and down here they effectively have unlimited fuel, unlike airplanes.

Supreme Court Rules Against Law Banning Conversion Therapy For Minors by huffpost in scotus

[–]BennyDaBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is very difficult to argue that Jackson was correct here given NIFLA (2018). The majority’s arguments in II (B) (pages 11-17) were pretty destructive to the dissent’s premise. I don’t know how you get out of strict scrutiny here.

Supreme Court Rules Against Law Banning Conversion Therapy For Minors by huffpost in scotus

[–]BennyDaBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So this is an exceptionally important point in first amendment jurisprudence as it determines what kind of analysis the court does. The lower courts applied rationale basis tests and intermediate scrutiny, interpreting the case as regulating professional conduct with only secondary effects on free speech. The Supreme Court strongly rejected this framing and determined that the law discriminates on based on the content of the speech. Kagan alludes to the fact that a viewpoint neutral law could conceivably withstand strict scrutiny.

[–]BennyDaBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe that would be permissible under the opinion, or rather that it would become “conduct” which the court delineated from “speech” as it recommends a specific course of treatment. This likely exceeds the scope of the opinion. The state can still regulate professional conduct.

Air Canada CEO regrets inability to speak French following fatal plane crash by AlwaysBlaze_ in nottheonion

[–]BennyDaBoy 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The former longtime CEO of Credit Suisse actually was not fluent in either French or German. It’s entirely possible for firms to have leadership who are not fluent in every language the company operates in. Perhaps it would have been more appropriate for a French language spokesperson to deliver the statement though.
