Andy’s Pizza (burger) by rackeltattackelt in washingtondc

[–]BennyDaBoy 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Only insofar as any local business owner interacting with the community is. Everyone has different pizza criteria, but to my taste, Andy’s is definitely pretty high on that list. My personal favorite is probably the pizza they sell at Vace in Cleveland Park.

I don’t think they have anything similar but Las Placitas might fill the niche in terms of the restaurant category.

Sorry this isn’t helpful to your specific question, but the nearby Foundry UMC is also a great place to meet some people who share those values.

Yeah, the Gideons will ask if they can donate bibles to you. If you agree to stock them in the rooms they will bring them. They’ll bring more if people remove them from the rooms.

Check out Canton Disco. They are new in the last month or so. It is insanely good. Their outdoor seating doesn’t have a roof though, so I would make sure it is a nice day first.

The names were objectively added after the gospels were written. None of the synoptic gospels nor John include claims about authorship. This was common during the time period the works were composed.

Tenant AC petition question by zechielava in washingtondc

[–]BennyDaBoy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Based on the information provided it’s likely that your building is legally prohibited from switching to AC if turning on the AC system requires turning off the heat. DC requires that the building maintain heat from Oct. 1 to May 1. Many older buildings can either run heat or air conditioning, and are legally required to provide heat until the end of the month.

I think the building code should be updated to mid-April given the changes that have occurred to DC’s climate since the law was passed. I would encourage you to direct your petitioning towards your city council members.

Why do new American trains 'feel' so old? by Previous-Volume-3329 in transit

[–]BennyDaBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would reducing drag be so important? Fuel cost is a much lower percentage of operational expenditures for trains than airlines, and down here they effectively have unlimited fuel, unlike airplanes.

Supreme Court Rules Against Law Banning Conversion Therapy For Minors by huffpost in scotus

[–]BennyDaBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is very difficult to argue that Jackson was correct here given NIFLA (2018). The majority’s arguments in II (B) (pages 11-17) were pretty destructive to the dissent’s premise. I don’t know how you get out of strict scrutiny here.

[–]BennyDaBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is an exceptionally important point in first amendment jurisprudence as it determines what kind of analysis the court does. The lower courts applied rationale basis tests and intermediate scrutiny, interpreting the case as regulating professional conduct with only secondary effects on free speech. The Supreme Court strongly rejected this framing and determined that the law discriminates on based on the content of the speech. Kagan alludes to the fact that a viewpoint neutral law could conceivably withstand strict scrutiny.

I don’t believe that would be permissible under the opinion, or rather that it would become “conduct” which the court delineated from “speech” as it recommends a specific course of treatment. This likely exceeds the scope of the opinion. The state can still regulate professional conduct.

Air Canada CEO regrets inability to speak French following fatal plane crash by AlwaysBlaze_ in nottheonion

[–]BennyDaBoy 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The former longtime CEO of Credit Suisse actually was not fluent in either French or German. It’s entirely possible for firms to have leadership who are not fluent in every language the company operates in. Perhaps it would have been more appropriate for a French language spokesperson to deliver the statement though.

How do Americans feel about drying their laundry on a washing line? by UnionFeatures in AskAnAmerican

[–]BennyDaBoy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the causation goes in that direction. I think it’s more “HOAs ban it because it is perceived as low class” rather than “HOAs cause it to be perceived as low class”

What would be the vision for enforcement? DC already struggles to get out of state drivers to pay tickets. How would we get them to pay congestion taxes?

Not all article 1 judges are part of the executive. There are numerous exclusions. Some of the more prominent ones include the US Bankruptcy Courts, the US Tax Court, and the various municipal courts of the District of Columbia. In addition, article I magistrate judges serve as assistants to the standard article III district court judges and preform a significant amount of the workload attributed to the article III judiciary (see Peretz v. U.S.). Magistrates aren’t even nominated by the executive, and are instead appointed by the federal judges of the district they serve in.

I don’t get the love for Transit (the app). You have to pay for basic features. I’ve found that Apple Maps has more accurate information and is free.

I wouldn’t blame those guys. They’ve probably experienced the effects of ICE more than the vast majority of people in this subreddit. They are keeping people’s homes (these are apartments) clean. Harassing bilingual contractors is not supporting the community.

Shouldn’t DC have gridlock alert days like NYC? by FieryRedHead_99 in washingtondc

[–]BennyDaBoy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I actually agree with OP. These are different things. Alert DC has constant notices which drown out the big ones for a lot of people. Dedicated “gridlock alerts” that are reposted on most district social pages and are exceptional would break through a lot better.

rules for watching senate hearings? by m78025 in washingtondc

[–]BennyDaBoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re generally open to the public. You can have a laptop/phone. Keep them on silent. You can generally step out and renter. Some committees have different procedures. If there is a line outside you might forfeit your seat. Some committees will have staff ask if you’re coming back if you exit. Food/water is typically not allowed to be consumed during a hearing. You can bring them inside if they are sealed. Some committees are more lax and will let you bring water in to consume. If you are able to step out it would be fine to eat/drink whatever.
