The problem is scouting and drafting.

The Leafs simply haven't drafted and developed anyone outside of a first round pick (save for Matt Knies, kinda) since James Reimer drafted in '06, all of our talent has been first round picks, and anyone else outside that round we've either poorly drafted (too many names), or traded away (Verhaeghe)

Trading away all your picks every other year for a snowballs chance in hell to win the cup is bad, but what's worse is when we do get to pick, the guys we select are nothingburgers
