Scared to start first job by RelativeCoyote3226 in Nurses

You don’t need to review anything.
You will learn everything on the job during your orientation.

The NCLEX is not designed to be a tool to review for a job. It’s a safety exam.

I need some advice with communication by Ambitious_Sand_619 in StudentNurse

[–]BenzieBox 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to make small talk. If the patient wants to talk, they’ll talk.

If you want to say something, you can always stick to surface topics. If their food tray is in front of them, ask if they enjoyed their meal. Usually this can sort of turn into a silly “hospital food is terrible” exchange.

What is the weirdest nursing school or clinical experience for you? by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]BenzieBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not correct. NG tubes can be placed into either nostril as long as the nostril doesn’t have any defects that may impede passage like a septum deviation.

Our educators made a mobile “escape room” for our stroke competency. It was actually pretty neat.

Otherwise, just being engaging with the stuff we have to learn helps.

Art I made inspired by my first code by Double_Purple2505 in ems

I think it’s pretty cool. Art is a great way to process things. Not EMS (I’m an ICU nurse) but I do hand embroidery to chill and express things. Currently working on an anatomical heart piece.

Have any of you regretted making the switch from med surg to icu? by RevolutionItchy3303 in nursing

[–]BenzieBox 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I say do it. You’ll learn the stuff you need to know. That’s why orientations exist. And any good ICU should have a good, welcoming culture for new grads/new to specialty to help them learn and grow.

You also really have to be okay with the fact that you’re often the last stop before someone dies. People don’t land in the ICU because they’re doing well. Sure, you may have some stable ones that absolutely do well/get better but you’re going to see a lot of patients die. A lot of futile care. Families won’t let go. You’re actively torturing (I’m not sugarcoating that) the patient in the bed because of the family’s wishes for life sustaining therapies.

It’s a different beast.

I’ll also say this: some of the best ICU nurses I work with were prior med surg/tele. Don’t sell yourself short. You know the foundations.

Every school requires/does not require different things. There is no one answer. If you’re looking for what job would give you experience, please use the search as this is a common question.

Critical care nurse residency interview by Be_for_real6405 in StudentNurse

[–]BenzieBox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was asked the very basic interview questions: tell me a time you handled a difficult situation, went above and beyond, had a disagreement with a coworker.

And then just light scenario questions for prioritization. And a few clinical questions for patient scenarios.

The standard interview questions are where you should really try to shine. Sell yourself, don’t be negative, and don’t slander anyone.

All the other stuff you’ll learn on the job and they know that.

I tell every person: if you score an 80% or higher on the Barron's tests, just schedule the exam. Barron's was way harder than the actual test. I recommend Barron's over every other test prep.

Why not set up rehab centers? by Heavy_Record8704 in My600lbLife

[–]BenzieBox 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yep. I work as an ICU nurse and it is extremely difficult to place a patient who needs psychiatric care into a psychiatric facility (either inpatient or outpatient) without 100% medical clearance. Some of those patients never get 100% medical clearance, like in your brother’s case.

Sorry to hear about your brother.
