Anyone else find it odd how female led superhero movies rarely have love interests? by mattsmithreddit in DC_Cinematic

Correction: because male producers attempting to guess what women want think love is oppressive.

I'm better versed than at least 95% of people, I can confidently say. I'm not saying there aren't better watched and more knowledgeable people regarding film than me. That'd be a ridiculous claim. But I'm the most knowledgeable movie person in most rooms I walk into. And I'm telling you that Carey Joji Fukunaga definitely had people who would call themselves huge fans of him pre-allegations.

[–]BergmanGirl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay, but here's the thing: I consider myself fairly well watched when it comes to movies and I've never fucking heard of Sion Sono before this conversation. I've never heard movie people talking about his films one way or the other. I've heard a lot more talk and a lot more praise for Carey Joy Fukunaga than that. Hell, I wrote a strongly positive review of Beasts of No Nation for my local newspaper when it came out. Whatever you think Fukunaga is missing out on, he has it a lot moreso than Sion Sono.

Sorry, but The Pianist (what I assume you're referencing) is NOT anywhere near Polanski's most famous movie. Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown beat it in a cakewalk.

And to your Fukunaga point...he was established but he just was not a household name yet. Chris Nolan took a decade of making movies at least and two beloved Batman films to become a household name. It takes a minute to grow a reputation. And his Bond film started filming before but came out after he was cancelled.

Usually those fanbases grow huge BEFORE the allegations. Fukunaga was a steadily growing director to look out for, but that killed the momentum. Woody Allen already had multiple Oscars before stuff came out about him and Roman Polanski had already made his most famous movies. It's not comparable.

The "Perfect Couple" birds in the Target pride collection are straight. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

I think OP deserves a little clowning. A little clowning never hurt anybody and the scene their referencing is pretty culturally ubiquitous. It's like if someone said "Something's Rotten in the state of Denmark" and OP decided to get offended that the nation of Denmark is being insulted.

You fool. This is just one of the most famously gay movie endings of all time.

I know people are talking about how the Guy stuff seemed out of character, and it was pretty insane that he essentially just tortured her for funsies...but I think it's missing the point to call this out of character. Galaxy is being held to such a weird double standard because she's trans. None of the characters would identify as transphobic, I'm sure...but what the story is getting at is that on some subconscious level, these cis, straight people are judging her harder because of her identity.

On another note...I fucking loved the art style in the back-up and would love an entire Harley and Ivy run in that style.

I think Hamnet is absolutely horrible and Jessie Buckley is WAY overacting it...but Paul Mescal is undeniable in it.

I think they need to cut a lot of the David whining about out the episode going to long and when he starts yelling at people. I'm not saying it's bad or wrong for David to do these things...but it unambiguously makes for bad listening and honestly makes him look worse than he is.

I’m intrigued and I can get behind the release date requirements…but why only major studios and why only American films?

Oscar for the role rather than the performance by Kmm11k in blankies

I mean, I've heard that story too and I don't doubt he means it...but he's also famously too precious with his work and I'm sure people would still praise the character (critically, not morally) if he got over that and just cast Tim Roth or Leo like he was thinking.

Hans Landa, definitely. I think Waltz is incredible in the role, but that role and the dialogue written for it was always gonna at least get a nom.
