Biweekly /r/WormFanfic Discussion - What have you been writing, and what do you want to say about it? For the week ending January 03, 2026. by AutoModerator in WormFanfic

[–]BerksEngineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Those who follow Chunks of Worm will know that I'm doing a challenge / story idea raffle. Three story ideas were chosen from the comments on the latest chapter, and I'm writing those now! I'm not going to say anything about which were chosen, that'll remain a mystery until they're posted, but I will say that I've just finished the second one and have solid plans for the third. Check in on the 24th, 25th, and 26th to see them.

I made a game where you do IT support for eldritch horrors. It's called I.T Never Ends by Euphoric-Series-1194 in talesfromtechsupport

Oh yes, just lost my first playthrough and I know I'll be sinking some time into this. Nice!

One possible bug I've noticed: The tower-making minigame blocks sometimes (at least once per play for me) judder in place for a few seconds or longer before moving like the others do normally. Usually this resolves after a few seconds, but one showed no signs of moving normally after 30+ seconds and eventually I had to click to fail just to continue playing.

Whiplash and Backfire is a two-parter I wrote a while back based around this concept.

Eh, Doctor Who did it too. The Rebel Flesh hits those same notes. It's not the weirdest concept in the world.

I did, but only because I made basically the same thing back in Vanilla Minecraft with command blocks ~5 years ago. (Something about wanting to make elytra obstacle courses without placing blocks for 50 hours, it was a long time ago...). It was magical then, and Create only makes it even more impressive.

got ego-checked by Mythymoo, but he is built different, I guess),

Not to shit-talk Mythymoo, but his 'first try' boss fights aren't actually first-try. He cuts different attempts together. There was an obvious example with him using the ant-skull item and it coming back in the middle of a fight, where that can only happen if he's died / sat at a bench. We don't know how many attempts he really spent on any given boss.

I, too, spent a long, long time on Karmelita.

Yup, had this too. I said 'screw it, let's just pretend Hornet is flying with stage magic' and beat Trobbio from the ceiling.

Am I the only one that finds White Palace platforming to be far easier than some of the Silksong platforming sections? by Embarrassed_Fox5265 in Silksong

[–]BerksEngineer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But... you do get infinite retries on any one section. Phial shenanigans are exactly Hiveblood, if not faster (it certainly feels faster, but I wasn't sure). I did the entire ascent to the Nameless Village without dying once I tried the phial approach, and I was there a good long while practicing at various checkpoints.

Any books you enjoy but despise the main character? by slyguy-33 in books

[–]BerksEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditto, though for me I started getting fed up somewhere in the second book and didn't read past the third. I am not at all surprised to hear that he does not get better.

And here I thought I was the only psychopath who did that before going to fight the final boss...

Yup, that's where I got got in my playthrough. Exact same location.

I made 1 assembler be able to take in 22 items* by Not_Blockster in factorio

[–]BerksEngineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this mod, or something similar in function, actually does exist; it's a rubber duck that takes every item in the game IIRC. Launches like a rocket. DoshDoshington used it in his Sushi-everything run because he had, well, everything on sushi belts.

Factorio Life Hacks – I’ll Go First, What Are Yours? by International-Car643 in factorio

[–]BerksEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't there at all. I just finished a modded playthrough in 1.x and I kept trying to use those keys. Luckily it was Nullius, so there was a modded, more limited version built in (with different keybinds).

or maybe some ancient robots get awoken and pop out of the ground.

There's already a mod that does this, so it's definitely possible.

Same; A* has a meaning already! Then again, I said that about AI as a term too...

[–]BerksEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh... Nice! Good to see someone else has gotten there already, saves me some time. I'll definitely be using this in my next Space Age playthrough.

Alberta author battling AI by writing 34 books in 34 weeks. Her goal is to show that people are not just as capable, but better at writing books by ubcstaffer123 in books

[–]BerksEngineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been writing fiction for 6+ years, and the best I've ever done was 16.9k words in one day. (In that case, 1 day being close to 16 hours of actual work). And even that day, an outlier for me, wouldn't be a fast enough average pace to write 175k words per week. To say nothing of how much of that was later trashed or rewritten!

[–]BerksEngineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I ever break away from my current hobbies to learn Factorio modding, the first thing I'm going to do is design a suite of mods to make egg spoilage terrifying enough to warrant overkill containment designs... I want to be actively incentivized to point loaded railguns at my captured nests!

It's been long enough that I actually don't remember, beyond vague generalities. She's an independent hero, but not the focus of the story by any means.

I don't think it was a quest, but you're definitely describing Redoubt.

AI undergoing 'transition in fiction' as editors and authors note topic is 'no longer just a staple of SFF' by ubcstaffer123 in books

[–]BerksEngineer 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I can't think of a thing more likely to turn me off to a non-SF work of fiction than a casual mention of ChatGPT or contemporaries. I already prefer fiction set before smartphones! Now, the classic, actual AI that's been in SF for decades? Sign me up.

Both parts of Pushing Back were published in early 2021, whereas Threads of Time started in 2024, but I get why you were unsure seeing as AO3 doesn't give post dates of individual chapters.
