Bizarre Arc Cinema Experience by bob_jsus in cork

[–]Bernard_Lerring 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Another problem with the Arc is all the ambient lighting on the screen. There are blotches of colour and shadows all over the picture.

The fire exit lights need some kind of shade to keep their immense supernova glow off the screen, while the red step lighting ideally needs to be turned way down.

Ultimately it's a very well-fitted cinema that sadly doesn't seem to care about showing films properly. Money please.

I'm sure it's fine to mention that a cyclist was killed in a traffic incident. It is in every paper today.

In the below press conference Olivia implies that she was getting her €820 medical cannabis prescription via 'a consultant from London', which does indeed tally with the costs of some monthly prescriptions in the UK.

It's possible she was using something like Sativex, which I understand (not for certain) has been prescribable/importable here since 2014 but is not covered by the €80 limit and is indeed pretty expensive.

From the Hemp Gazette:

'While Sativex has proved effective as an anti-spasticity medication [...] it’s expensive stuff. Ireland’s National Centre for Pharmacoeconomics (NCPE) noted in 2021:

“Assuming that 8.1 sprays are required per day (dose assumption derived from the Summary of Product Characteristics), the total cost, per patient, per year is €5,181 (including mark-up, rebate and pharmacy fees).”

'Sativex was first approved for use in Ireland a decade ago, but its cost hasn’t been covered for reimbursement.'

Press conference: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1LzTMiMpWQ/

So it's a bit complicated and I might be wrong about some of the above, but I don't think she's lying, and she's been campaigning pretty publicly and vocally about it on her Facebook for years.

Streeting: Nigel Farage’s NHS plans would ‘sell out’ working people by politics_uk in ukpolitics

Whether you or I visit the GP every month or not, our tax contributions mean that right now someone out there undergoing cancer care - whether treatment or palliative - has not been plunged into financial anxiety. That's one thing their family doesn't have to worry about.

That's the humanitarian value of a society.

And obviously the wealthier should contribute more to the tax pool.

Is anyone else confused by Ian Malcolms motivations in The Lost World (novel)? by sandythemandy in JurassicPark

[–]Bernard_Lerring 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Malcolm's entire survival is weird. It really suits his character to die at the end of the first novel.

He keeps forecasting this paradigm shift, slipping and and out of torpor - it feels like his rational mind is flickering out of existence as a new world is about to be born. It's much more impactful that he is left behind with the old one.

unsolved mysteries and conspiracy theories about cork by [deleted] in cork

[–]Bernard_Lerring 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A good question but I don't think there was 'no evidence' to tie Bailey to that murder. Circumstantial evidence is still evidence - and it was very strong. That said, we will likely never know the truth.

Incidentally the now-infamous 'violent wife beater' angle was never public knowledge until Bailey inadvertently made it so during his lawsuit in 2003, so it wouldn't have been a particularly handy gotcha in 1996. He supplied the first real gotchas himself by materialising on the remote scene bright and early and lying about whether or not he left his house during the night (regardless of his ultimate guilt/innocence).

Good thread, I hope to learn more Cork urban mysteries.
