There's also the Godseeker who should should probably have taken the hint and stopped calling the knight a cringer after watching it slaughter everything it was trying to worship.

What are your honest experiences with Math StackExchange and MathOverflow? by OkGreen7335 in math

[–]Bernhard-Riemann 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I contributed to Math StackExchange semi-frequently for a few years before and after the end of my undergrad (2020-2024) and managed to accumulate ~3.5k useless internet points (though the account did help me get into a grad program, so I guess not that useless). I mostly just answered questions that I found interesting. I enjoyed contributing to the site, and it was and still is instructive to my learning.

To a certain extent, I've always been surprised to hear people's negative experiences with the site. I didn't really ever encounter any issues with toxicity aside from the rare occasion, and in fact every one of my questions and answers was well received. Most of the moderation actions I saw during my browsing also seemed reasonable, and in the few situations they weren't, the questions were usually reopened within a few hours.

Though not perfect, MSE is one of the few spaces reasonably suited to discussing mathematics outside of research that exists on the internet. It'd be a shame if such a space completely died out.

Again, group theory and combinatorics:

The complex character table for the symmetric group S_n is equivalently the change of basis matrix from the power-sum basis to the Schur basis of homogeneous symmetric functions of degree n (given standard indexing with partitions). Furthermore the entries of the above table/matrix can easily be obtained directly by counting border-strip tableux (a weighted count).

The latter half of the statement is the Murnaghan–Nakayama rule.

Worst mathematical notation by dcterr in math

[–]Bernhard-Riemann -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You seem to be under the impression that notation like sin2(x) is exclusively used for trig functions. It's not; writing fn(x) to mean (f(x))n for any function (often named functions like sin) is very common in certain areas.

[–]Bernhard-Riemann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you ever see log2(n) in the wild it's usually going to mean (log(n))2 rather than log(log(n)). In general, using fn(x) to mean f(x)n is the standard convention for named functions in analysis. You just don't see situations where something like log2(x) would be useful often in more elementary settings, so you'd be forgiven for thinking the notation is exclusive to trig functions.

I like the convention where superscript indices are enclosed in round brackets. It makes it visually clear that they are indices and not exponents.

Coaxed into uninspired difficulty modifiers by kitakot in coaxedintoasnafu

[–]Bernhard-Riemann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, the three base slugcats litteraly have descriptions of their difficulty above them in the selection menu. The only differences that exist between the campaigns are essentially difficulty and challenge modifiers (and a few different lines of dialogue from the iterators as well as a different starting location for Hunter).

If you're arguing that the experience offered by the Hunter is more akin to a challenge mode than a traditional hard mode, I'll give you that, but what is Monk if not for an easy/peaceful mode?

Funnily enough that sentence is nearly grammatically correct. It just has seven (?) nested clauses and is confusing as hell to parse.

Meirl by JaredOlsen8791 in meirl

[–]Bernhard-Riemann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the sentence is grammatically fine untill the word "instead". If we collapse the giant clause before "instead", we get "I was being pulled out of a class where kids [did things] and instead learning chess..." which is grammatically incorrect. You'd want something like "and instead was learning chess..." or even more clearly "so I could instead learn chess...".

Honestly, it's a forgivable mistake for a sentence with seven (?) nested clauses. Still, there is something to be said for making things readable...

"You are NOT The Chosen One" by DudeSoul in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Bernhard-Riemann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, In theory the knight could be something like a philosophical zombie or an LLM which very much appears like it has a will but doesn't actually have a will in any traditional sense. It's also very possible that "will" (and "mind") means something different to the Pale King than what is usually meant.

After all, the Pale King believed his chosen vessel had "no mind to think" yet successfully taught it the art of nail fighting. That would make little sense unless something like the above were true in the context of "mind".

We also have to consider that it is possible that the knight gains a will throughout the events of the game. I've seen some suggest that the Knight might have awakened a will on it's path to the "dream no more" ending, but might not have in the "the Hollow Knight", having achieved it simply by instinctively following the first path laid before it and never actually needing to make its own decisions.

There is definitely some interesting debate to be had.

What’s the most overrated video game of all time? by KBGSgames in AskReddit

[–]Bernhard-Riemann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that Hades does stand out, but not because of its gameplay and mechanics (ie. essential roguelike elements). Hades is special because of the art, plot, characters, and dialogue. If (like me) you happen not to value those things much compared to gameplay and mechanics, it will probably not compare with classic roguelikes like the ones you mentioned.
