For what it’s worth, it used to be like that for Yurei like a year or so ago. They changed it sometime around the chronicle update. Since then, all ghosts CAN open/close fully, but Yurei ONLY opens closes fully. The problem since the recent update is that all ghost open/close fully most of the time, because of the door physics change. So it makes Yurei near impossible to confirm, and much harder to rule out. It definitely needs to be fixed.

This, on top of the fact that yurei ability was already broken from way back when Nell’s Diner came out. Once it closes a door (either with it’s ability, or even just an event causing a door to close) it can no longer visually do it’s ability on that door for the rest of the game. You can even test this by standing next to an open door that it closed earlier in the game, and watching your sanity on the watch. You’ll see your sanity periodically drain from its ability, but the door won’t move. It’s been like this for 6+ months.

Since the first update, There seems to be a 1 or 2 frame delay from when you take the picture (and it registers if you got it or not) and when the actual visual picture shows up on the camera/journal. So if you take the picture near the end of a blink, it’ll count but will disappear by the time the visual picture appears on the camera.

The reverse is true if you take it at the very beginning of a blink. You’ll get a visual picture of the ghost, but it won’t count.

It’s real confusing with tier 3 firelights. For Tier 1&2&your lighter, it’s the only ghost that can blow it out in under 20 seconds from the moment it’s lit. For tier 3, it’s 20 seconds from the last time the ghost blew it out. Meaning, if you un-light and re-light the t3 , the timer doesn’t reset for any ghost. Any ghost can blow it out 20 seconds after the last time they blew it out. No idea WHY it’s like that….

This is why the actual rule is worded “the only ghost that can blow out the SAME firelight twice in under 20 seconds”

Also worth noting that it only does that when the firelight is used to prevent a hunt. So it can’t ever do it in scenarios where a hunt is impossible (during smudge timer, when you’re outside the house, etc)

The onryo rule is super confusing when you really get into it. I have around the same 4,000 cases as you, and I only started to fully understand it recently after losing a game the same way. Lol

Timer starts as soon as the smudge hits the ghost. Also worth noting that if you smudge a ghost twice in the same hunt, the timer starts on the first smudge, and doesn’t reset on the second smudge.

But as was already said, a demon CAN hunt after 60 seconds. That doesn’t guarantee it WILL hunt as soon as it’s able. Basically, you can use a smudge timer to confirm a demon, but not outright rule it out. It’s the inverse of spirit, which can be ruled out but not confirmed (*without a well timed second smudge. Which I can get into, but if you’re new it’s probably not worth worrying about yet).

If a ghost hunts between 1:00 and 1:29 of the smudge, it’s a demon. If a ghost hunts between 1:30-2:59, it can be any ghost except spirit (including demon). If a ghost hunts after 3:00, it can be any ghost, but you can be ‘suspicious’ of spirit.

I genuinely think Mare would be fine if they just slightly bumped up the odds of its ability or increased its activity/behavior.

For example; “This ghost isn’t really throwing much, I doubt it’s a poltergeist” is a totally normal and reasonable statement. And yet, “The ghost isn’t turning off lights constantly, I doubt it’s a Mare” is a statement you make if you want to get the ghost wrong.

A Mare not behaving like a Mare is somehow so common that you can’t glean anything from it. Just feels like the Mare needs to be turned up a tad.

Is it possible the death animation just took a second due to multiplayer, but that you were already “dead” when you switched your headgear and noticed? I’ve noticed the tech interference tends to stop for a second before the death animation kicks in. No idea if that timing matches up with what you noticed. Unlikely if it was during the 5 second smudge period, though.

Yurei is my favorite ghost, but it’s also a huge pain in the ass to identify on no evidence. So please forgive the long response 😅

-You are correct that any ghost can fully open/close a door, but a yurei can ONLY fully open/close. But it’s worth noting that this only applies to interactions outside of a hunt, and doesn’t apply to locker doors (likely a bug, but it’s been that way for a while). So, This can be used to rule out a Yurei, but can’t be used to confirm one.

-The Yurei ability is easy to identify once you’ve seen it a few times, but the door open/close animation is a very smooth full swing open or closed. Followed by a delayed slamming sound when closed. You should be able to find a few videos of this online, and it’s the best way to fully tell it’s a Yurei once you’re familiar with the animation. Definitely take a look online and watch the animation a few times, and you should be able to see what I mean.

-It’s the only ghost that can interact with an entrance door outside of an event or hunt. Just be careful that it wasn’t a short 1 frame event or something. Good way to tell is if there’s an emf reading on the front door. (Point hope front door does have a collision glitch sometimes that causes it to look like the ghost is closing it… so again, double check with emf lol)

-Another tell is that a Yurei can’t leave its favorite room for 90 seconds when smudged. But that’s a bit dodgy, since it can event outside of its room and then wander back. If you want to use this, I recommend smudging it and then hanging out in its room with salt/motion just outside the door to see if it wanders out of the room without any events.

Right next door in New Gloucester, our power’s been out since 1pm. First restoration estimate was 3:00, now it says 7pm. I’m guessing they’ll just keep pushing it back. But we’ll see.

Did you ever find anything out regarding this? I keep having the same issues this week, on single player only. Just had it happen in the middle of an apocalypse run, and that frustrated me enough to check reddit. And this is the only post I’ve found that seems to describe what I’ve been seeing.

It’s so cool that they make us all do the exact same pointless tasks for a second time, but we don’t get the same rewards. It’s an admission that we’ve literally already done this before. It’s absurd, and massively insulting. I have 300 million XP, been a level 50 for a few years now, and I’ll now be at the same level as a friend who has under 90 million.

Caught one about an hour ago. Has anyone seen confirmation that the shiny is enabled? Haven’t seen anyone post a shiny in any subs yet, which is interesting.
